Pelosi's Challenger Calls Her Chicken

@ 11:00 am by Chris Good

UPDATED 5/13/08 10:16 a.m.: Clarification — ActBlue itself does not endorse candidates in primary races.

UPDATED 3:24 p.m. Eastern: Speaker Pelosi's office responded with comment, which was added in the fourth paragraph.

A Democratic primary challenger to Nancy Pelosi in California's 8th district is calling the House Speaker a "political coward" with a TV ad that compares her to a rubber chicken.

Shirley Golub, a San Francisco real estate agent who worked on the 2000 presidential campaigns of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), charges that Pelosi is a "chicken on impeachment, torture [and] ending the occupation” in Iraq. The ad shows a rubber chicken, which Golub says is “just like Nancy Pelosi,” in that the two have rubber spines.

The ad began running last week, and Golub credits its funding to online donations through ActBlue, a fundraising website for Democrats.

When contacted for comment, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said, "Speaker Pelosi is committed to bringing our troops home safely and soon and is focused on strengthening our economy, lowering gas prices, and addressing the housing crisis in San Francisco through comprehensive legislation."

Pelosi has come under repeated attacks from liberal war protesters who at times have demonstrated outside her front door. Pelosi and her spokesmen have voiced solidarity with the aims of protesters, as well as frustration that efforts to move legislation halting the Iraq war have been unsuccessful.

The Speaker enjoys a significant fundraising advantage over Golub: according to April Federal Election Commission reports, Pelosi's campaign has raised over $1.8 million to Golub's $48,928 this cycle. Pelosi also enjoys a cash on hand advantage of over $159,000, compared to over $25,000 for Golub. The district will hold its Democratic primary June 3.

While Golub is the only other Democrat vying for the seat, she is not Pelosi’s only challenger from the left. Cindy Sheehan, the much-publicized peace activist who demonstrated outside President Bush’s Crawford, Texas, ranch, is seeking signatures to qualify as a third-party candidate. Sheehan will need to gather 10,198 signatures by Aug. 8.
