Pelosi and Her Cats Rickroll the Capitol

@ 3:08 pm by Michael O'Brien

Visitors to the House of Representatives' new YouTube channel have been RickRoll'd, courtesy of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The Speaker's office released a "Capitol Cat Cam" in the spirit of President Bush's Christmastime "Barney Cam," in which a couple of cats prowl the Capitol, to some slow music.

"In honor of the launch of http://YouTube.com/HouseHub, Speaker Pelosi presents a behind the scenes view of the Speaker's Office in the US Capitol," the Speaker's office said in a release accompanying the video.

37 seconds into the video, though, viewers are RickRoll'd, which is when a copy of the music "Never Gonna Give You Up" by 80s musician Rick Astley surprisingly appears instead of an image the viewer was expecting. A fuller explanation of the phenomenon can be found here.

  1. NANCY PELOSI FOR PRESIDENT

  2. Though it hasn't been cool for quite some time… Rickrolling is now officially uncool thanks to Pelosi.

Pelosi, you sold out our childrens' future to Rickroll.

  3. Heh heh, Ain't this the cats meow? Giggle, giggle.
Impeachment is off the table, but not the puddytat.

  4. I've been laid off and she's rickrolling people. What the hell is this? GET TO WORK.

    Comment by JJ — January 14, 2009 @ 6:06 pm

  5. Nancy strikes a blow for Anonymous everywhere.

  6. You know, say what you will, but now that Rickrolling is on the precipice of mainstream culture, seeing it pop up in such unexpected venues as the Macy's Parade and an official Nancy Pelosi YouTube video is actually MORE hilarious.

  7. She's not aware that Anonymous exists, she's doing something her poser grandkids had to explain from occasional internet experience to her children, who cluelessly passed it on when they saw it at the Macy's Day Parade. Your spawn is dead, go back to /b/ & come up with something else before I get the Church of Scientology & Chris Hanson to show up in a Yellow Van.

I'm aware of the complex issues surrounding swearing in a blog, but this type of activity really objectively requires it in order to clarify one's opinion. It is non-optional, because the response it engenders is very explicit in a way that I can't figure out a replacement for.

Nancy Pelosi doesn't deserve the D next to her name or the historic gavel next to her seat. She has led this Congress into the worst economic/political crisis in 80 years by following the most blatantly incompetant, insultingly ambitious, maliciously evil executive since we had a King. She has done it in a spirit of congeniality, collaboration, and humor that conditions do not merit. She reminds me of a role Jerry Luis almost played in The Day The Crown Cried, recruited by Hitler to lead uncooperative children to the gas chambers. Like her career, it was a comedy.

So, in short, to condense a library's worth of opinion into one pithy phrase, I respond -
RESIGN OR GET TO WORK, CUNT!

  8. Weak, pseudo. Very weak. There are myriad other ways that you could have expressed your opinions without resorting to a misogynistic slur, and it's pretty lame that you would try to preemptively excuse yourself by claiming that the circumstances required profanity. Weak.

The joke may be old, but Pelosi hardly deserves this kind of opprobrium for the rickrolling.

    Comment by Dan — January 15, 2009 @ 8:55 am

  9. Isn't she violating copyright laws by using that she helps impose on the rest of us? How does she explain this contradiction?

    Comment by matt — January 15, 2009 @ 10:21 am

  10. Great Joke Nancy. Loved it.

    Comment by Mimi — January 15, 2009 @ 8:26 pm

  11. Hmmm….maybe this economic stimulus plan is just a rickroll!

Cut the cat cam Ms. Pelosi and stop wasting my hard earned money making youtube videos
