Stars Will Kick off Obama Celebration on Sunday

@ 2:12 pm by Michael O'Brien

A bevy of celebrities and musicians will help kick off an inauguration celebration on the footsteps of the Lincoln Memorial Sunday, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced Monday.

The event will include performances by artists from Bruce Springsteen to Mary J. Blige, and feature appearances by actors such as Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington, who will read historical passages.

As previously reported, New Hampshire Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson will give the invocation.

HBO will televise the celebration, entitled "We Are One," which takes place from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 in Washington. The kickoff event foreshadows a week of activities and celebrations surrounding the inauguration next Tuesday of President-elect Obama.

"We have found that the great artists are eager to take part and each one is working with us to find music that expresses the optimism and hope that people bring to the Obama inauguration," said Michael Stevens, the director of the production.

  1. "We Are One" unless you're a conservative or you even vaguely disagree with them.

  4. And when will the angels descend from on high to welcome in the new mesiah and herald his coming with roses and sunshine. And lo then the skies will open upon the messiahs coronation and money shall falleth from the heavens and the world shall swoon as one and there shall be no more want or need and peace shall rain.

  5. End Of Days, that was funny! Sounds like Chris Matthews covering B. Hussein Obama.

  8. Why the celebration? I thought we were in the worst recession in a thousand years?

    Comment by Ferd Berfall — January 12, 2009 @ 3:14 pm

  9. If the celebrities would just get together and celebrate, it would be okay. They won. But it will be laced with Bush bashing, conservative bashing, religion bashing, etc., etc., etc., and will deteriorate into a bunch of sore winners acting like they've been picked on for the last 8 years.

Remember 9/11! and remember more importantly how you felt on 9/12! To quickly we forget that all we wanted was to be safe. Now that that has happened for 7 plus years, we should be grateful to Pres Bush for being tough enough to not cave in to the appeasers like Reid, Pelosi, Obama, etc. And let's 'hope for change' in the Messiah's agenda, now that he knows what really is going on, that he will continue to press forward in protecting this country, and not kowtowing to those here and abroad that think you can negotiate with terrorists!

  10. I've never seen so much bandwagoning.
I do find it funny that Barry is already disappointing the lefties by appointing so many retreads and experienced folks to his cabinet. So much for change. So much for "no more Washington insiders".
Careful what you fall for, sheeple!
This guy is backpedaling on his promises all over the place. Hmmm, would the messiah say anything to get elected? Surely not. HA! Just a typical slimy Chicago politician. How easily the gullible are fooled. Let's see how the next 4 years go…

  11. Given the difficult times we find ourselves in I wish Obama the best. Lay the politics aside and let him, through his actions, earn your respect or disdain.

Actually there is one other thought which George Bush made that may frame the above comment a bit clearer: "the agenda is 10% driven by personal politics and 90& driven by real time events".

  12. A bunch of pampered elitist liberals celebrating the coming of the "Messiah"… Why is this news? Besides, I thought the economy exploded and there wasn't any money left to celebrate with.

  13. America is greater than any of her presidents, so I will celebrate yet another peaceful transfer of power, and wish our president the best in keeping our country strong.

And then, I will proceed to verbally beat the living crap out of him over his hair-brained ideas of socialism, all the while laughing at the leftist moonbat netroot usefull idiots who had the ignorance to think this clown was going to "unite America".

    Horsepoo.

  18. I've read through some comments and have to laugh. Yes, we're in a recession but the rich and famous will always have the money. As long as we empower the rich to get richer by buying their stuff and paying their way, the average hard working people won't be better off.
As for Freedom, we've always been free & safe. We didn't need Pres. Bush to come and give us either. 9/11 was a horrible act by cowards but don't forget that terrorists have been around long before 9/11/01!
As for a celebration, let it happen. We celebrate to celebrate so complaining all you wish and let the celebration go on.

  21. I received this email from Bill Clinton today (I'm signed up on Hillary's website as well as change.org - it is unbelievable…

Help fulfill the promises of change. Contribute today!

Thanks to you, 2009 is going to be an amazing year of progress for America. I know we will all feel a sense of pride and achievement as we watch the new Congress get sworn in and get to work with President Obama.

I'm so proud of the way Hillary poured herself heart and soul into helping Barack Obama and so many other Democratic candidates last year.

And, like you, I'm looking forward to all the change and progress that those victories will lead to in the weeks and months ahead.

As historic as 2008 may have been, there is no time to rest. Now is the time to keep our momentum going by showing the new Congress that we're here to support them in 2009 right from the very beginning.

Contribute $5, $10, or more today to provide essential early support to translate the promise of 2008 into progress in 2009.

The reason we won so big last year is because House Democrats had the early support from people like you. That early strength we built together put our party on a trajectory for success, and we kept going!

With Barack Obama's inauguration fast approaching, we need to make the same powerful show of strength as the new Democratic Congress gets to work with the new Administration to solve the greatest challenges of our time.

Contribute $5, $10, or more today to provide essential early support to translate the promise of 2008 into progress in 2009.

All of us are anticipating what an emotionally powerful day January 20th is going to be. So many dreams will be fulfilled, so many barriers overcome, and so much history will be made. A bold new era of American leadership is about to begin. However, we shouldn't wait until Inauguration Day to get to work.

    All the best,

    Bill Clinton

P.S. January 20th is going to be a day like few others in the entire history of our nation. But it's going to take a strong show of early support to meet the deep and serious challenges that await in 2009. Contribute $5, $10, or more today to provide that essential early support and ensure fulfilling the promise of this moment.

  22. Well I guess I found where the 12% that think Bush has done a great job gather.
Yeah, times are hard and money is short but the end of an 8 year nighmare is cause for celebration.
Traitor, empty suit, the piper, appeaser, etc, suck it up Rethuglicans. Mr. B. Hussein Obama will be your president unless you do the U.S.A a favor and renounce your citizenship and move to someplace where you are majority. Oh, by the way take the junkie Rush with you.

  23. Not that it really matters, but I never thought much about Springstein, and now I surely will not listen to him. Springstein and the rest of his filthy rich star pals all enjoy their tons of money, but heaven forbid the rest of us try to get a head. No, we need to spread what little earnings we make around to people who are lazy and don't want to work. Springstein, you may have a lot of money to spare, but most of us do not. Bring back Aerosmith for the Superbowl half time show.

  25. I am simply amazed at all the haters expressing their negativity on this blog.

The musical artist and actors that will be appearing on this show are not receiving any money for their appearances. Hell, they will write it off on their income taxes as a contribution just like all the other wealthy people do. Just because you don't have the money to participate…don't HATE.

Hell, Obama is not even in office yet and the haters are already out in full force. I'm amazed that we have so many fortune tellers available now but they could not predict the state that the economy, educational systems, healthcare etc. are currently experiencing. I mean people…GET REAL!!!!

    Comment by Stephen — January 12, 2009 @ 4:43 pm

  26. Yep, another self-flaggelating love fest by so-called entertainers and other Democrats. Real Americans will be watching "24″ or some other patriotic programming. Or, just turning off the TV and reading a good book. Enough of the smiling, smooth-talking traveling snake-oil salesman from Illinois.

    Comment by M. DuPlessus — January 12, 2009 @ 4:44 pm

  27. Gee, I thought for certain that someone would sing "Bring In The Clowns"! The final act will be when Oprah sings!

    Comment by Rank — January 12, 2009 @ 4:52 pm

  28. David,

I think you are wrong about the 12% you stated. America must have more intelligent people that just 12%. In either case, history…. not you elitist snobs that supported Obama… will prove those of us that support President Bush are correct!

By the way I do hope that Obama can prove us non-supporters wrong. Why? Simple, this nation needs for him to be a success! Now right from the gitgo, that is being nicer to Obama than you all were to President Bush!

Until he does prove us wrong… I request the song…. Here Come The Clowns or Bring In The Clowns!

    Comment by Rank — January 12, 2009 @ 5:01 pm

  29. I recently organized a charity concert event with this same name. We raised about $3,300 for a local charity as well a about 4 huge barrels full of canned food.

it's a pity that "We Are One" has become an Obamanation.
