Former Rep. Tom Davis to Lead GOP Centrist Group

@ 10:44 am by Michael O'Brien

Former Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) will lead the Republican Party's centrist Main Street Partnership, the organization announced Wednesday.

Davis will lead the Partnership, self-billed as "the nation’s largest organization of elected centrists," after spending seven terms in Congress, during which he led the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and chaired the House Government Reform Committee.

“The 2006 and 2008 election results make it clear that the Republican Party must – once again – reach out to independent and centrist voters if we are to restore our Congressional majorities and return a Republican to the White House,” Davis said in a statement.

“We must get back to the basics and emphasize our commitment to fiscal responsibility, free trade, limited government and good government," he added. "If we are going to become the majority party again, we must restore voters’ faith in our ability to govern.”

“Tom Davis brings a wealth of experience, creative thinking, and tremendous energy to the job,” said newly-reelected Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who is a Main Street Partnership member.  “I am very pleased he has accepted this position.”

Some other Main Street Partnership members include Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), and 32 members of the House of Representatives.

This past fall, Davis did not seek reelection from his northern Virginia seat, which was eventually won by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D).
