Rep. Frank: Obama 'Overestimates' Ability to Unify

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) thinks that President-elect Obama picked same-sex marriage opponent Rick Warren to give the inauguration invocation because Obama "overestimates" his ability to unify people.

"Oh, I believe that he overestimates his ability to get people to put aside fundamental differences," said Frank, the first House member to come out of the closet voluntarily.

Frank, on MSNBC on Monday, said that he's delighted Obama was elected and that the country is headed into the "best time" for public policy since the New Deal.

"But my one question is, I think he overestimates his ability to take people, particularly our colleagues on the right, and, sort of, charm them into being nice," Frank said. "I know he talks about being post-partisan. But I've worked, frankly, with Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay, the current Republican leadership. The current Republican leadership in the House repudiated George Bush. I don't know why Mr. Obama thinks he's going to have them better than George Bush.

"And so, to be honest, when he talks about being post-partisan, having seen these people and knowing what they would do in that situation, I suffer from post-partisan depression," Frank said jokingly.

Frank and same-sex rights advocates have fiercely criticized Obama for picking Warren, an evangelical pastor who supported a same-sex marriage ban in California.
Frank said that Warren's attempts to reach across to the gay and lesbian community and other groups such as Muslims doesn't allay his objection to Warren's featured inaugural role.

"I think Rick Warren's comments, comparing same-sex relationships to incest, is deeply offensive, wildly inaccurate, and very socially disruptive," Frank said. "And I'm glad he is talking to the Muslims. I'm glad everybody's talking to everybody. We're not here talking about not having conversations. We're talking about singling somebody out for a great honor. And I think the president-elect made a serious mistake in doing that."

I don't agree with Barney Frank very often, but he is absolutely correct in his assessment of the Warren invitation.

Thirty years ago, Warren would have made the same types of comments about blacks/white marriages.

The invitation is a travesty.

Frank needs to stop attacking Obama in an effort to diminish and cover up his immense role in the destruction of Fannie Mae. Frank was busy having an affair with one of the executives and accepting big bucks from FM for his re-election campaign. Frank is a crook plain and simple.

The liberal left only wants their viewpoint heard or presented. Marriage has been defined for over 5000 years and all of a sudden we can change it.
If Mr. Frank and his group have there way there will be no landmarks to guide our society. For Mr. Frank its anything goes. Frankly I am offended by his ridiculous remarks about what Rick Warren said. He basically said we have a definition and if we start to mess with it then anything goes.

Congressman Frank,

Two years from now a good number of your colleagues will be voted out of office for suffering from "post partisan depression" as you referred to it.

President-elect Obama is trying to at least appear to be in the center. It looks like campaigning around the country for two years has provided him some perspective.

Congressman the more you talk the more you sound out of touch. Keep talking…you'll provide great sound bites for campaign Ads.

Anybody remember the Kennedy - Bush love in, movies at the White House, etc? Obama has the same honeymoon ahead of him — about two or three months, or the first time Pelosi tells him "the way things are going to be," whichever comes first.

In this case, I agree with Frank, even as my guts react against his protestations. Mainly because I want to believe otherwise. However, I recently paid a visit to an inflammatory, racist, xenophobic site belonging to the Flemish (Belgian) right-wing group Vlaams Belang, and the hardened, rage-filled, caustic hatred evidenced in these people's highly intellectualized racism… reminded me that "they" indeed are NOT like "us". "Us" being progressives. The rage and hatred that is the bedrock of the extreme right is immovable. I'd forgotten that until I again visited these people's little world of thier own cyber-making.

Obama lives in a bubble of acceptance in some ways - I appreciated what he has set out to do in the choices he has made thus far. The rubber is meeting the road for real. However, the Right are hardcore in a way that Center and Left are not. I know this from experience.

Our new President might do well to be careful. We need him, we need what he represents.

You claim that 30 years ago Warren would have made the same comments about black/white marriages. How do you know that? What are you basing such an assumption on? Rev. Warren was 24 yrs old 30 years ago and was studying to get his doctorate. Where you get off making those kinds of suppositions about a man you know nothing about I do not know. I don't think I have ever agreed with rep. Frank but he is right. Obama will have no more better results in being post-partisan than President Bush.

And so far he has failed with his claim on bringing 'change'. He had promised on bring more transparency to government but when he has a chance to prove this in explaining his senate seat selection debacle, he clams up.

So much for change.

Barney Frank has been in politics a whole HELL of a lot longer than Barack Obama. He is a very intelligent and thoughtful man. Obama made a serious mistake, one that he will pay a serious price for and it is correct for Congressman Frank to call him on it. When Obama invites someone from the KKK to his inaugural and in a special role - then he can use his rationalization as an excuse. Since Obama obviously believes that GLBT votes are only important in an election and utterly dispensable afterward - he deserves every bit of flack he is getting. His is a hypocrite. Barney Frank is an anoying nut case. I did not vote for Obama but he will be the President and I wish him well. Frank on the other hand is the cause of much of the economic crysis with his give loans to anyone who wants one so they will vote for me policy. His is disgusting and Mass deserves him since they vote for him.
He is 1. Gay and then 2, a Democrat and then 3, a liberal and someplace way down on the list he is an American. He needs to sort out his priorities.

This is exactly what is wrong with America today. We have too many politicians pushing their own agenda and no one pushing an agenda for the average American taxpayer. Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Bush and whomever you want to name all have their agenda, not ours. And the really terrible thing is that know matter how loud Amerian's scream the politicians refuse to listen to us. This country is in a cesspool and the mess has been caused by "bought and paid for" politicians and the corporations who did the paying. Politicians only 'pretend' to listen to their constituents during an election campaign. Once in office they turn their backs on those who put them there and listen to only those who can pony up the money to keep them there. America has the very best politicians that money can buy!!

Frank is an entrenched politician and is the chairman of house commerce committee. I think it is in the interest of Frank to shut-up. Everyone knows he is cut from the same cloth as Newt Gingrich. I'm disappointed in the choice of Rick Warren, because he brings a false gospel. Warren thinks that preaching "tips for better living" is a reasonable substitute for preaching that Christ gave himself up as a sacrifice to save us from the wrath of God. Christ saves us from the wrath that we justly earn for ourselves by sinning against the infinitely holy almighty most high God of heaven and earth.

I can only guess from Obama's comments about his faith that he has fallen prey to the sort of false gospel that wolves like Warren preach (in order to keep their church's packed). Since President is a civic office, I see no reason to taint Obama's inauguration with false religion. We should make it a secular event.

Let those of us sinners under the covering of Christ's sinless perfection pray that Warren would repent of his false teaching, that God would raise up faithful preachers to proclaim God's word to Obama and all other Americans so that they might have saving faith in Jesus Christ, and that Obama, and all of our judges and congresspeople will be granted the wisdom to rule this nation to our maximum benefit, and the benefit of all other nations.

I don't understand the disdain for Warren's comparison of homosexuality to incest or polygamy. If it's accepted that societies standards of what constitutes marriage can change over time, then it'd be only natural that the changes continue. So eventually, you'd be able to marry children, or have multiple wives, or marry a sibling, or even eventually marry your pet rabbit. People who look down on those "alternative lifestyles" just aren't being open and understanding. It's demeaning to even judge those lifestyles by labelling them "alternative", isn't it? Isn't that what gays say about those intolerant folks who won't allow gay marriage?

Frank is a loon, and one of the primary reasons we're in the current crisis. His legislation to give housing loans to people with no credit and no proven ability to pay back the loans are a primary reason for the financial collapse.

Ignoring the loon Frank, Obama's biggest challenge is not bringing people from the right side of the aisle over, it's in dealing with the fringe liberal left wingers.

I'm a moderate who has lived in extremely conservative areas and now live in a very liberal area. The biggest difference I've noticed between the two is the liberal left-wingers become emotional, almost crazy when they don't get their way. I met one lady who was watching and rewatching Palin on TV, and yelling at the screen. Pure hate. I never saw anything close to that from the extreme conservatives.

Obama's our president and I wish him the best, but he's got a tough job. I think he'll get participation from the moderates and some on the right, but the left-wing thinks they own him now.

As Chairman of the House Banking committee he advocated the lowering of borrowing criteias so that the "less fortunate" could buy property and homes. He intimidated the banks into lowering their lending standards. They did, and now you see the result.

This country is in a crisis, and Frank is responsible for a good part of it.

I don't understand why we as Americans are so complacent about what is happening. We should be rioting in the streets demanding Frank be put in jail and our government actually do something that WE THE PEOPLE actually want them to do.

Let me get this straight. Sex is nature's way of making babies so a species can continue on into the future. Heterosexual sex makes babies. Homosexual sex does not make babies. Society and governments encourage relationships which make and nurture babies, call them marriages, and give them benefits since the future of societies and governments depends on a new generation of babies. Homosexuals want the benefits of marriage, and so begin calling their relationships "marriage", and anyone who wants to disagree with them bigots.

Barney Frank is an epitome of everything that is wrong with our country right now. I have read with interest the comments, and it's funny how most of the hate-mongers ARE the liberals. I am a moderate-conservative. I am not interested with who someone sleeps with in the privacy of their own bedrooms. I am interested in integrity and ethics. Barney Frank has neither. He has used his status of an openly-gay politician to excuse the report of his extremely poor performance record as "gay-bashing". As far as I am concerned, Barney Frank should NOT be the one overseeing the committee invesstigating the downfall of our mortgage industry, he SHOULD BE the one answering the questions! I am not an Obama fan, as I do not believe he has the record nor the experience to be in the White House, however, he is now the President-elect and hope for the sake of our country that he can get some serious on-the-job training to help him traverse the many issues facing our country as a whole, both here and abroad. Barney Frank is nothing but a disgrace and I whole-heartedly hope he comes under indictment for ethics violations, along with Dodd, Pelosi, Reid and Cox, to name just a few!

I don't think people realize how offensive it is to compare the gay struggle with the black struggle. To post a comment that Warren would have said things against black/white marriages 30 years ago is unfair to Warren and is offensive to blacks who are firm Bible-believers. Being black and being gay are NOT similar struggles. Being black is a cultural inheritance. Being gay is a lifestyle. No matter what one thinks about the gay lifestyle, do NOT drag the black struggle in the middle of this mess!

I agree with Barney Frank that Rick Warren is a mistake, although of minor consequence.

However, Barney Frank ought to shut up for awhile. He had a large role in fostering the mortgage crisis and if he had any guts, he'd own up to it. But of course that is not the way of a blustering loud-mouthed politician. Too bad the voters of Massachusetts have such short memories.

Fannie Freddie Fraud and its perpetrators (e.g., Barney Frank) signalled to the bankers that the capital markets can be used to grab cash. The fraud was obvious, and ignored.

Barney Frank should be in JAIL.

The fact that Frank, Dodd and Pelosi are pictured behind Secty Paulson in support of the federal bailout is very telling. I would pose a question about Barney Frank and many in the Gay Community. I hear talk about tolerance. I am supposed to be tolerant of the Gay lifestyle - frankly I have no problem with the gay lifestyle, civil unions are fine.. marriage I consider to be a union between man and woman. So Mr. Frank would consider me an intolerant bigot. Why is he and many in the Gay community any different, aren't they bigots as well? Barney Frank has a long history of making inappropriate and often inflamatory remarks. He also has zero credibility. His failure to act lead to the current housing meltdown and resulting fiscal crisis. He had a relationship with a Fannie Mae executive for more then ten years whom he referred to as his spouse while he was suppose to be regulating it.

This from a man who admitted to paying his boyfriendd Stephen Gobie for sex. He denied that he was aware that the same man was running a prostitution ring from his apt. Frank received a reprimand from the US House.

From Media Matters, a left wing site; The House ethics committee launched a 10-month investigation, ultimately finding, as The Boston Globe reported on July 27, 1990, "that Frank had violated House rules by writing a misleading memo that was used in an effort to end prostitute Stephen Gobie's probation on felony charges and by allowing his House privileges to be used to waive 33 parking tickets that Gobie might have received while driving Frank's car." The report recommended Frank be reprimanded for the infractions, and the House voted for such punishment on July 26, 1990.

As to Rick Warran, his comments reflect the belief of most Americans.

Seeing Franks, Waters and Meeks ridicule the regulators in 2005 during House testimony where the regulators dared proposing added requirements to Fannie Mae, staggers the imagination. And then to find out his boyfriend created many of the products which went bust says it all. How and why he is personally not being held responsible symbolizes all that is wrong.

Sad to say but a tenet of Gay Activism is to try to equate being gay with being black. So it's not enough to say Rick warren is a bad guy because he doesn't support gay marriage, if Rev Warren were around thirty years ago he would be against civil rights. I truly hope that Washington will begin to respect separation of church and state. Under God? What God? This country and this world will never agree on one God and because of this simple fact, religion should be left to religious organizations. As long as religious organizations continue to play key roles in governing, they should also be paying taxes and putting money into the whole of society, not just the causes that they wish to further in the name of religion.

Saying that Rick Warren would have been against civil rights forty years ago is so ridiculous. Folks, unless you have a psychic ability to get into the hearts and minds of an individual don't decide what that person would do in a certain situation. That statement also reeks of the kind of closed mind you think Mr. Warren has.

Mr. Warren believes homosexuality is wrong. Lots of us do - and in that he may not be representing the views of gays but he's representing the views of a lot of other people. At the same time we don't hate the individuals - we're simply not going to condone that which we think is wrong. You can rant and rave and pick and choose what you think is right and wrong all you want - that doesn't mean I have to go along with your moral relativism - and it also doesn't mean I hate you. But you sure seem to hate me and others like me because we don't fall into lock step with your beliefs. The hypocrisy is amazing.

VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict said Monday that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

The Church "should also protect man from the destruction of himself. A sort of ecology of man is needed," the pontiff said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

The Catholic Church teaches that while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are. It opposes gay marriage and, in October, a leading Vatican official called homosexuality "a deviation, an irregularity, a wound."

The pope said humanity needed to "listen to the language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman. He compared behavior beyond traditional heterosexual relations as "a destruction of God's work."

Rep Frank is making things tough for President elect Obama even before he is sworn in. Many questions in my mind. Why did he say nice things about fannie mae stock in august 2008? It's less than a dollar now. Why is President elect's long form, birth certificate locked up in hawaii? What is locked up in kenya? Did he use a different name when he was growing up? Barney and other like minded activists fail to grasp the importance of this distinction. I believe the vast majority of heterosexuals would support the movement if the word Marriage would be dropped from the discourse. To alienate millions of potential supporters makes absolutely no sense to me. What is their goal anyway? Probably preaching to the choir here (mostly), but I support Obama's decision. I'm not specifically a supporter of Warren, but I believe in his constitutional right to freedom of religion. And I'm impressed that Obama is living up to his promise to bridge the divide, not to mention making a brilliant political move. As for Rick Warren, it's easy for left wing liberals to say what he should or should not do. Because he stands for the Bible and against homosexual marriage doesn't mean he can not or should not give the invocation. What does one have to do with the other?

Saying Rick Warren would have been against black/white marriage is ridiculous. Black and White has nothing to do with homosexuality. I will never accept that. You can tell a black person by his skin color most of the time but you rarely know someone is a homosexual. He has to declare it in your face! One has nothing to do with the other!

The most important issues facing people in this country are jobs and finances. Homosexuality should be and is so far back we can not see it, hear it, or care about it. We will continue putting things in their correct order. 2008 and 2009 are not the years for bickering over insignicant feelings and irrational hatred spewing from the lips of homosexuals. We are not bigots, our eyes are not shut, we see something they can't see. We see marriage is for men and women, they can't see that and we will not accept it any other way. Barney Frank misses the point.

President-elect Obama has not chosen Rick Warren to give the inauguration invocation for the purpose of diversion, whether that be (mis)using the platform (no pun intended) to discuss homosexuality, gay marriage or any other civil/human rights issue.

Rick Warren will be on hand at the inaugural to offer an ecumenical prayer (if there is any such thing). If, on that occasion, Warren so much as prays on behalf of anyone other than himself (such as ALL of those assembled) "in Jesus' name" he will be returning Frank's insult with one of his own.

But, for now, and until such time as Rick fails the ecumenical test, I assume that Frank is wrong in refusing to give Warren, for at least one day (January 20, 2009), the benefit of the doubt.

In 1978 my wife and I tried to buy our first home. It was $30,000 and we didn't qualify for lack of income. We were disappointed, but we learned about and accepted that there are guidelines related to income and credit standing that must be followed when a person is borrowing a significant amount of money. Fast-forward a couple of decades or so and we find that Barney Frank insisted that those time-tested rules be thrown out because in his wisdom everyone is entitled to own a home regardless of their ability to pay. And what we have, thanks to Mr. Frank, is a real estate mess that has destroyed the financial well-being of millions of Americans, and their peace of mind along with it. Why does this clown still get to speak into a microphone?

Frank is absolutely right and he's damned smart too. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were being urged by the free market right wing fundies to CATCH UP to what private investment banks on Wall Street and Mortgage Companies UNREGULATED by the Community Reinvestment Act like Countrywide and Ameriquest were doing in terms of repackaging bundled mortgages into securities without regard to their risk or quality. It was free marketeers like Greenspan and Phil Gramm who failed to use the regulatory powers they had to set and maintain lending standards. Besides.. we're NOT just talking about home mortgages here.. we're talking about TENS OF BILLIONS of dollars of securities being "insured" by AIG or purchased by hedge funds which held only a fraction of the promised amounts in actual CASH!! That did the real damage!

That being said.. Barney Frank is cautioning Obama the same way he cautioned Clinton not to play ball with the right wing. They see cooperation as weakness. We might as well go to war with them starting from day one and begin the push back against them which will take DECADES and not merely a few election cycles. The main thing is we've got to make sure that their assets become millstones around their neck. Go after Limbaugh and Hannity in a communication sense until those hundreds of millions of promised contract dollars become onerous to the companies who have offered them. The kids who supported Obama cause they thought he would move BEYOND the old battles need to get their hands bloody now while there's still enough time to really get our teeth into the right in enough time before 2010 and 2012 and not wait until Obama is on the ropes like Clinton was in 1998. He's got the bully pulpit.. if the right doesn't move to eliminate him immediately he'll have tremendous power to get after them and he really should. Hell.. I only wish he WOULD have chosen Jeremiah Wright just to make the point to the enemy. But he could at least have chosen a guy like T.D. Jakes or that other minister in Texas he is close with.

Dildo, first of all, you're a scary dude. Second, the attitude you portray is the problem, on both sides — treating those with differing opinions as the ENEMY.

Personally, I have many friends with whom I hold often greatly differing opinions. This is by design — limiting myself to "like-minded" people does not lend itself to growth or learning. While Obama and Warren have many differences between them, both have many commonalities as well, such as social justice.

You get a lot more done, for a lot more people, when folks are willing to talk, argue, debate, and then hammer out solutions. How do you think the Constitution was developed? Jefferson did not, as Moses, have it handed to him, written in stone.

In fact, no matter what our differences, Americans must remember that we all share one highly significant belief in common — the right of each individual to speak and believe as he/she wishes. I might think Rush Limbaugh's opinions are a load of trash, but I'd fight like hell to defend his right to have them (as I would yours, or even Senator Frank's). This belief is SACRED — we were the first nation *founded* on this belief, and it has been the armor that has protected us through the worst of times.

By demonizing the intellectual opposition or calling for "civil war", as another poster did earlier, you are completely ignoring what the founding fathers had in mind for our nation, and what they practiced amongst themselves. Worse, you are tearing apart what they worked so hard to put together. I think there needs to be some ass kicking and some nuts being crushed here for at least the first few months until the Republicans learn to bark on command… THEN we can start talking bipartisanship and compromise. But in the meantime.. as long as Barack Obama is having to force America to save the basis of it's industrial might almost against it's own will because FOOLS like Richard Shelby(R-AL) and Bob Corker (R-TN) make piss poor arguments as to why every car dollar spent in the future should end up in some foreign country's treasury… Pres. Obama should put his foot down hard or wherever he needs to to get things done. Obviously, you never listen to Limbaugh, Hannity or any of the other "dangerous" thinkers. I might challenge you to point out where any of their ideas can cause harm, motivated by fear, illogical or immoral. I tend to believe that, for the most part, whatever others do is fine as long as it remains within the realm of the law. I would require a further definition of "immoral" from you as some might consider it as such when two men go into an obvious out door. But, as I said, as long as they don't hurt others, that is fine with me and it is not for me to judge.

My gripe with Barney is that he is one of the major causes of the housing and credit crisis and has not, will not, take any responsibility. Quite the contrary, he is now trying to assume the role of rescuer. He is a hypocrit for daring to criticize others.

I'm a moderate (not an evangelical) who thinks this was a brilliant move by Obama to bring Evangelical voters to his side of the aisle. Picking Warren might help him to unite the country. I didn't vote for him (Obama), but he has been impressive so far and I'm willing to give him a chance. What other choice do we have in this economic environment. The country is in bad shape and we need people to work together. I am praying for things to get better in this country.

As one of the primary people involved in the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Rep. Frank should resign immediately (or removed from office) in disgrace and be deported. He and Senator Chris Dodd should both be brought up on charges related to these financial collapses and put in Federal prison. The economic downturn is having amazing side effects. A massive exodus of millions of illegal aliens, oil price reduces from $147 to under $40 in a few months, divorce rate has actually has drastically reduced etc. I think the gays are missing the current phenomenon. The recession/depression that we are in is having a grand social impact. The gay community is about to lose viability as a major social cause for a couple of reasons. I don't think it will be as much an anti gay movement or "homophobia" laced crusade against the evils of homosexuality but it will be large scale indifference. As Americans shift in their attitudes to more of a survival mode tinged with fear and uncertainty ,you will see more people clinging to traditional teachings and the support of churches. Also when people are gripped with fear they tend to consider if there is a connection between what is happening and there conduct. The American world view should retract about 30 years to a more conservative posture. If the gays don't have some grasp on this they will set there cause back considerably. Millions of americans saw as angry activists attacked a little old lady holding a cross while holding signs condemning h8. The black community is often times afforded a political pass to speak freely and often somewhat politically untouchable and they overwhelmingly are against homosexuality. Attacking churches and little old ladies during a severe economic downturn when people are clinging to marriage and the bible out of fear and anxiety? Criticizing the black community about their stance on homosexuality while presumptuously trying to piggy back their cause on parallels to the civil rights movement? Obama is well aware that the political viability of the gay agenda is fading and had no impact on his victory. I believe the current tactics of trying to bully any public figure, church leader, business, or politician that shows any hint of decent against the gay cause,is going to backfire greatly. The gay cause is about to suffer the equivalent of its Russian winter. Perhaps the gays in america should adopt an attitude of thankfulness that they are generally left alone to do as they please in this country and not attack one of the last sacred institutions in our society. Accusing everyone who holds the bible in high regard as a bigot filled with hate. When large numbers in America are genuinely suffering, exaggeration, corruption, and incongruous whining are rather irksome. A whiner out of season shall be likened unto a buffoon.

Marriage is a defined word that should not be redefined. The fact is we can support same-sex unions without calling it a marriage, which is a religious term. The gays want to consume and demean marriage; if not, they would agree that civil union, along with all the rights of such as union was enough.

This is social statement that is a direct attack at the Christian population; that is why we appose it so.

Why not let Muslims have communion and Jews have Christmas. Why not have an Atheist Easter? It would only be fare for all to have the same thing. So if the Jews decided to have a Christmas on the 20th of January, should Christians just laugh and welcome them into the fold? It is a definition established by a religious faith that another group is trying to take away and manipulate for their own purposes, resulting in degradation of that meaning.

For Mr. Frank to imply that somehow conservative Republicans are less compliant toward Democrats than liberal Dems are toward Republicans is laughable. He and his left handed colleagues have missed few opportunities to turn important votes on important issues into partisan poltical hay. In other words, compromise is honorable so long as it's not his side that's being required to compromise.

As an aside, the predictable avalanche of criticism of Rick Warren as being some extreme right wing religious nut can only be the result of his critics either not knowing anything about him and presuming incorrectly, or simply not caring whether their bashing has any ground in reality. Mr. Warren is, on virtually all issues EXCEPT homsexuality, centrist at the very least.

The problem with the homosexual agenda is the notion that elective behavior is the same as genetics. Homosexuals are very fond of saying they were born that way. However no study, no laboratory, no scientific study of any kind has shown that one sex attraction is anything other than personal choice. If you want to be homosexual, go ahead. But don't try to hold everyone else accountable for your decision. Don't expect endorsement or support if you do something that most people find repulsive, immoral and vain. Pastor Warren is among the most tolerant of Christian pastors toward homosexuality. He is on the side of all people. He just does not embrace a radical and scripturally unsupportable redefinition of marriage.

If an individual who was Jewish by both birth and heritage professed Christ as their savior and the son of God, then by all means that person should be more than welcome at both the communion table and the celebration of Christmas, even if for some reason they might decide to celebrate Christmas on the 20th of January. After all, it's widely acknowledged that Jesus was not born on the 25th of December.

The key here of course is that such a person would need to actually accept and acknowledge Christ as savior, and there are a number who have. Jews and Christians share a common heritage, and that differentiates their relationship with each other from those with with other faiths.

Conversely, any Jew who doesn't accept Christian doctrine would not, I'm sure, have any desire to celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday on January 20 or any other day.

This country needs to be broken up into seperate independent nations based on time zones. There is nothing in common between me and my neighbors with New York, California, Hawaii or even Alaska. This does not have to be a bloody civil war , we should just go our seperate ways and govern based on what is best for our region. If I need a passport to travel to New York, that is a price I am willing to pay. This country is too divided and should cease to exist as a single entity.

I'm with you Dave, forget just states. I live in NJ and on a county by county basis we are extremely different. North Jersey and the rest of the state is nowhere near the same. This country is about HAVE's and HAVE NOT's and the HAVE NOT's think that they are ENTITLED to everything that HAVE's worked for. A common idea that lower income individuals have about higher income individuals is that they were handed everything and didn't work for it. This mentality is the reason that so much socialism has swept into this country in recent years. Nobody wants to work for anything and there is a lot of jealousy.

There was once a quote by someone that said the American people will never willingly accept Socialism but that one day they will wake up and it will be there staring them in the face and there will be nothing they can do about it. If that doesn't describe the times we live in right now I don't know what does. Everyone wants a bailout, everyone is crying about what they don't have, and meanwhile our government is slowly taking control of everything and doing it in the name of the people.

Option one…Obama dont like Gay People…regardless of using them to win. Barney Frank just cant get it through his head that MOST PEOPLE dont agree with homosexuality. Simple fact of the matter is that the most bigoted, intolerant hate filled people I know are homosexuals.

Tolerance means you MUST accept them and ANYTHING you believe contrary to what they believe is bigoted and mean spirited. There is no 'tolerance' from the left.

Rep. Barney Frank acts like he is important. I'm sorry, but unless they are a party leader in the house of representatives, nobody but the people inside their own constituency should pay any attention to anything they have to say.

The national press should ignore non-party leaders. Having a committee chairmanship does not provide a representative, one of 435, any relevance enough to be newsworthy.

If they are proposing a landmark bill, or get involved in some scandal , then maybe, but other then that, a member of the house of representives is only newsworthy enough to make the local newspaper, local tv news, and get on the local call radio show.

Nothing Barney Frank says or does unless he is sponsoring legislation or holding a congressional hearing, should ever be worthy of national attention. Please go away now Barney, serve your constituency and stop bothering the rest of us who don't live in your constituency and don't really want to hear from you.. well ever.

actually Mr. Viking…during the last three months leading up to the election the left wing terrorists kicked in my tail light (cost $800 to fix), pulled out all republican signs on my street multiple times, said utterly unspeakable things about lots of good people, Tony Snow as an example…if you ask me the absence of a moral compass and intense religiphobia/secularism and other moral deficit disorders widespread in the liberal movement are much more dangerous than the rhetoric from the right.

I am gay and I voted for John McCain, I do not trust Obama. My gut feeling is proving me right. Over 70% of Gay/Lesbian Americans voted for the slime, and Obama has yet to name an open Gay/Lesbian to his Cabinet. Obama just wanted your vote, and could care less about issues that affect out lives. McCain, though defined marriage between a man and a woman would never and did campaign for prop 8 like Mr. Warren did, yet Obama feels the need to reach out to a hate monger such as Warren, Obama backers and voters you get everything you are not going to get with Obama in the White House. Obama patronized the gay vote during the campaign and has yet to deliver, and may never deliver. I never drank the Obama koolaid, it lacked too much flavor and substanced.

Barney Frank doesn't need to be thrown out of office. Barney Frank doesn't need to be put in jail for his part in the banking and housing crisis. Barney Frank deserves to receive a permanent nap for his treason. Our forefathers would have expected and demanded no less from our citizenry.
This applies to Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, Diane Feinstein, Paulson, GWB, Dick Cheney, Madoff, and the entire membership of the ACLU, SPLC, and ADL as well. And there are others equally deserving of a traitors fate. Simply throwing them out of office is letting them off the hook. Putting them in jail for their participation in the downfall of our nation is going too easy on them. Putting them all into eternal rest is what every single one of these traitors deserve. Anything less is unacceptable, and I wouldn't shed a tear if any or ALL of them were made to pay the ultimate price for what they did to the rest of us. They've earned this fate.

It is true that Obama is already campaining for 2012. That is how the man is built: to get himself his next job. What's his next job? The 2012 election. There will be a revolt by a certain percentage of the 2008 koolaid crowd that backed him with 15 dollar campaign contributions and purchases of Obama trinkets as they realize they were Obama's 'useful idiots' at the ballot box. I agree with "jim in Georgia". Marriage, as defined by the State is a privilege, as is owning a gun, except, gun ownership is a right protected by the Constitution by the 2nd ammendment, but is clearly "infringed" upon by the States issuing permits. I guess lawyers and judges can choose what words mean now. Why don't we get rid of the ambiguity of the 2nd Amendment and restore its status, as a "right", before we even begin to ask lawyer makers for a "definition of marriage", which already exists(see Websters Dictionary). The slope just keeps getting slipperier, when comes to social issues. Wake me up when the PC police have taken there toys and gone home.

I do understand that Obama is not going to be able to please everyone. I think that by trying to include people like Rick Warren he runs the risk of alienating his supporters. The real facts are only about 2% to 3% of the entire US population is gay. And less than 1.6% of the population are same sex couples in the US. Of that 3%, 80% do not believe in God or consider themselves religous.

Folks, 97% to 98% of American's ARE NOT GAY!

With that said, gay's cannot and should not try to dictate what the vast majority of Americans should or shouldn't do. Especially Barney Frank. And especially when it comes to religion.

The comparison of gay rights with civil rights is flawed. Nature never discriminated against black-white relationships by preventing reproduction. Society did the discriminating. When it comes to gay rights, it's exactly the opposite. Gay rights activists are trying to approve what nature discrimiates against. Nature does not allow for reproduction of human same sex relationships, and reproduction is the basic purpose of relationships. The political left has a habit of labeling any opposing viewpoint as some kind of "hate speech". In civilized society, marriage has always been defined as being between a man and a woman, period. This definition is in no way prejudicial to homosexuals, who readily admit themselves that they live an "alternative" lifestyle. They are free to enter into civil unions and share all things just as a married couple does. It should not matter much that, legally, it is not called "marriage. Further, just because someone holds this pro-marriage viewpoint, does not make him a bad person, as Barney Frank would like us to believe. In fact, I think someone who led us into the current financial crisis (i.e., Barney Frank)and personally profited from the whole charade should be quiet, sit in the corner and hope nobody notices him.

It seems to me that the definition of marriage as "one woman one man" is a rather late coming defintion in human history. Islam allows for 4 wives and unnumbered concubines and it does seem that certain Hebrews in the Old Testament had everal wives and let us not forget the Mormons in their earlier incarnation. And any study of other non-Western cultures and most primitive cultures does not uphold the present Christian defintion of marriage. In addition, one might observe the high rate of divorce followed by re-marriage also re-defines the "one woman one man" at ONE time–but several wives and husbands OVER TIME!

Here, to get a little perspective, is what Congressman Barney Frank did several years ago. He answered a personal ad in the Washington Blade in which a male prostitute, Stephen Gobie, drew public attention to his "hot bottom" and "large endowment." Frank began to pay Gobie for sex and even invited Gobie to move in with him. When the arrangement soured, Gobie revealed to the press that he had been running a full-service prostitution ring out of Frank's Capitol Hill apartment. um this is sick and disgusting what barney did. but on the very low end of this all, one can't even understand what this man is talking about. he speaks so slurred. why has this jerk been in there so long, or at all.

The one lesson I have learned is that the Bible teaches WHATEVER your prejudices want it to teach at any point in time. Folks have been cherry-picking Bible verses for centuries and generally this ends up in death and other self-destructive behavior. But why do some people on the cultural left — I am thinking especially of prochoice folks — refuse to engage in rational discussion with prolife folks? Prochoice people talk in terms of slogans (e.g., "a woman's right to choose") but steadfastly refuse to discuss the the fundamental question: The entity that gets destroyed in an abortion — is it a human being or not?

I can't see how Frank can show his disgusting face, he who is a good deal responsible for the housing crisis. He protected his liberal, democratic buddies operating Fannie and Freddie, ripping them off, now is in charge of trying to FIX it! He directed business to Fannie while his lover worked there.
He had a homosexual whorehouse operating out of his basement, and claimed he didn't know about it, but fixed a lot of the John's parking tickets while it was in operation. Frank is what is wrong with the congress. He needs to leave and let someone who is not so corrupt, take his place. Chris Dodd too. In my opinion, we have one of the most corrupt congresses we've ever had, but if you have the "D" after your name, corruption is overlooked. I'd love to see Frank, Dodd, Waters, Meeks, Gorelick, Raines all, put under oath and questioned and demanded of them to bring back the loot from the Fannie and Freddie organizations.
Frank doesn't mind discriminating against Rick Warren because of his religious beliefs, but doesn't like the shoe being on the other foot when it comes to his homosexuality. Two faced, no conscience.

The irony of Barney Frank's comments is apparantly lost on the writer of the article. He states that Obama overestimates his ability to work with Republican's then goes on to criticize Obama for his choice of Warren to give the invocation. I wonder who Obama will have more trouble working with. Obama rose to the top of the Democrat party by playing identity politics. In the general election (with a few nearly disasterous exceptions) he abandoned this approach, all the while giving a wink to the liberal special interests. Now that he has won it all those special interests are calling in their marks (hence the criticism from Frank). I suspect Obama will largely ignore them. He's gotten what he wanted out of them and if Obama has proven anything in his career it is that he doesn't honor political debts. Frank and other Democrats are trying to exert control over Obama, but until and unless Obama's popularity wanes it will be useless. He better watch out or the FBI will be bugging his office.

Regardless of the fact that Barney Frank is a criminal in the literal sense of the word he obviously doesn't pay much attention to the religous world that he holds so much disdain for. The idea of homosexuality being compared to incest did not come from Rick Warren it came from the Bible (Leviticus 17) where it is mentioned in the same paragraph as the statement "and a Man shall not lay with another man for God hates that." I am not anti-homosexual nor do I believe that homosexuals are going to hell but for someone who is supposed to be a leader of our national community he should do more research into where his opposition is coming from and stop hiding behind the gay community. That communiuty is full of productive, law abiding, and hardworking men and women and it is a shame that Barney Frank is one of their most outspoken figure heads.

Concerning Obama picking Rick Warren:
Regardless of his books or status, he's a lukewarm pastor preaching the "Gospel of the Tickling Ears". He and Obama are a perfect match because they both water down what they believe and present it to the public for their approval.
Warren offers a feel-good seeker-sensitive emerging church type of gospel. Those that cling to what he has to say probably haven't read their Bibles very deeply - or don't seriously follow it's teachings. He reminds me of Chamberlain trying to appease Hitler in WW2 - and it makes me sick!

Obama has a Machiavellian outlook which denies the relevance of morality in politics - he'll use craft, deceit and anybody he wishes to be able to hold on power.

If Rick Warren were an authentic messenger of the Gospel, I would really welcome his invocation - just like Franklin Graham did at the last inaugural. As it is, the fact that Obama, a secularist "Christian" in-name-only who denies Biblical teaching by embracing homosexuality and abortion, is accepting Warren's "feel-good" theology into his arena, confirms what I am saying.
Jesus told the Laodicean church that their lukewarmness made him so sick that He would vomit them out of His mouth.
I think I now know a little bit about how the Lord feels!

I honestly don't think anyone embraces abortion. What some may BELIEVE is a woman's right to choose. Obama has stated over and over his willingness to cut the abortion rate. And I don't really know what's meant by 'embracing homosexuality'. Does that mean he wants to be gay? Because you may or may not know this, but he's married to a woman. What I've heard Obama say is that people, all people, should be treated with equality.

Well…. I hope all American's are paying close attention to all this.

Funny how those who yell the loudest for others to acceptance and toleration from others, often turn out to be the most intolerant of those who might disagree with them.

However, even though the vast majority of American's do not support Gay marriage, with 52% actually supporting a Constitutional Amendment stating marriage is between a man and woman, and only 39% supporting Gay marriage (CBS News Poll)… rest assured that Sen. Obama will make you proud with his sleight of hand tricks.

While Obama is lulling the GOP, Conservatives, RINO's and the Christian Right asleep with his little crumbs swept off the table… he will be inacting the greatest liberal shift in the history of the USA.

People like Rick Warren… as genuine as they may in fact be… will be almost hypnotized as their millions of followers interpret their dizziness for endorsement of the man in office.

It will be 8 years before the potion wears off and the right wakes up to a Court System that has taken such a left turn, that elections and the will of the people will not matter at all.

This is a perfect example. The PEOPLE of California have SPOKEN. But to the LEFT…. forget the PEOPLE…. we will ask the COURT to OVERTURN THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

Just wait until Obama and the Democratic Congress get through flooding the Courts with ACTIVIST LIBERALS who will FORCE the ultra-lefts agenda upon the PEOPLE.

A perception that was recently on display during his CENTRAL involvement with the financial bail out bill. Stating, based on his insistence, the financial institutions involved understood that transparency and oversight was needed in order to get this bill approved. Some of these people just don't get it. Christians don't hate queers and lesbians, they just do not want them to have a "Christian" marriage. Marriage is not ordained by the State or Federal Government (it is only recognized by the Government). Marriage is ordained by God. It is a "Christian" or Other Religious (Buddhist, Muslim, etc.) ceremony. There is not a religion true to its founding, in the World that recognizes or perform queer or lesbian marriages. Marriage has been for over all the history of mankind only between man and woman.

If queers and lesbians want to get married, then by all means, DO. Go have your civil union, marriage, or whatever you want to call it. Get married to the Moon or your Dog if you want to, Nobody really cares. Just do not expect it to be recognized or performed by a Christian Church or Clergy. The reason is clear. In the Bible, Marriage is between a Man and a Woman. Not a Man and a Man, Not a Woman and a Woman.

I am not a supporter of Frank or Obama. But some of the hateful remarks toward gays is wrong. If you have read the Bible as claimed, more heterosexual acts are condemned than gay. Gay acts are not mentioned in the 10 Commandments, but heterosexual ones are. Acts forbidden in the Bible do not seem to receive the same weight in our society if heterosexual sins are mentioned. Many religious people here are missing the true message of Jesus.

To me, it does not matter who gives the inaugural invocation, as long as he believes in God. Barney is gay, and the minority. Are we supposed to put him first, and forget about everyone else? This is what is wrong with the whole situation. Barney probably does not even go to church. If he does, he should ask God to forgive him for helping us get into this mess we are in now. Now is not the time to raise taxes. Lower business and income taxes now to ensure US companies are the most competative and employees have extra capital to either save or pay off debt. Once US companies are more sound financially and jobs are more secure employees will be able to invest extra cash in the revived economy. With the extra jobs created, govt will get more via additional payroll taxes and along with reduced govt spending our national debt will decrease.

A man cannot truly give himself to another man in a way that is fruitful; in other words two men cannot become one and/or have children(nor two women). Barnett Frank chose homosexuality lifestyle. Rick Warren chose Christian lifestyle. You can't be both but you can be tolerant while holding your choice. Barney is all about others accepting his view. Mr. Warren has every right to offer his view, but I rather doubt he will have anything to say about such views when he represents the President Elect. Had Obama chose Barney to lead his convocation, Mr. Frank would probably have little to say about the lifestyle he endorses and lives.
Tolerance does not equate to adopting or agreeing to the views of another. I think the gay establishment should stop trying to change the Christian movement, but move onto identifying their selves separate. Marriage is a Christian institution. Gays should make their own institution, write their own code of ethics just as Christian's have the Bible.

First of all, Warren's words were twisted. He did not say gay marriage is like incest. What he said is that many people have different ideas of sexual activity and bonding that he wouldn't sanction those either — including polygamy, incest,etc. He said marriage is between man and woman — no other combination. The scripture supports him.

However, Warren is obviously not saved. He said that he wants to have sex with every beautiful woman he meets but is able to control himself. A born again Christian would have transcended his urged, not suppressing them. Begs the question of what other urges Warren is suppressing. In the same vein, just as a born again Christian who undergoes the conversion experience would assume a new, perfect nature, which would enable him to forge healthy, noble bonds with women (instead of viewing them all as sex objects he must resist), a gay would also no longer be consumed with desire to have sex with members of his own sex.

As much as Warren condemns Gays, he himself is a fallen Christian and essentially a fool.

Ok– so a preacher against Gay Marriage is a controversy. But one for it is not? (Obama has both).

Gay marriage is not about equal rights. Any man (gay, straight, bi, tg, whatever) is able to marry any woman he chooses. Conversely, any Woman can do the same. Just because it isn't what you desire, doesn't make it inequality. Some people never want to get married.

Gay marriage is more about forcing society to accept and endorse one's choice.

At what point does you desire for acceptance trump my right to disagree?

As always, the left is about changing society into what they believe. "Political correctness" is such an example. Forced conventional thought (or indoctrination)– if you disagree, you are not only wrong, but subject to state sanction… And some worry about separation of church and state.

Our president-elect is shrewdly appealing to the right, to give him leverage with the left who want control him (particularly Madame Pelosi and company in the House). I am not enterested in what ever it is that Barney Frank might be doing in private, because he can't create another unfortunate human, even a normal one, by whatever he is capable of doing with the body of another Gay male.

What I do object to is the attempt by Gay's to change the meaning of a word that has been understood in many lamguages to mean the union of one man and one woman in matromony. If Gays want to have a legal union providing almost all of the benifits of marriage, then do so, but in no way can it ever be called a marriage. They can have anything they want, except for real sex.

In the first place, all married people would be very angry to have their marriage union placed on the same moral, or ethical level as a couple of Gay's doing whatever it is that they do to each other in private, or otherwise. There must be some unique word not already in common use to describe a couple Gay's relationship with each other which they could use to legally descibe it . They just can't use the words marriage, or holy matromony, etc.

I may not approve of the idea of a Gay union and do not approve of it nuch the same as I don't approve of smoking either because it just simply stinks. At the same time there will probably always be gay's wanting to establish physical relationships with each other, so why not give them some legal protection under the law?

There was a large sign posted inside overhead rack on a London Tube car recently that said

"SOME PEOPLE ARE GAY, SO JUST GET OVER IT".

While this could be true, just don't call their proposed legal relationship "Marriage" because that term has alresady been taken and has been in use for many centuries world wide now.

Barny Frank may be gay, but it is his odd sounding mouth full of chewin tobacco voice that drives so many people away from whatever he has to say. You can't believe him much anyway, but not just because he is admittedly Gay.

Have any of you ever seen, or heard of a hetrosexual pride parade anywhere? Thank God we hetrosexuals don't have this driving propensity to want to display our private, or near private parts out on display in a parade for all to come and see. See there is a difference between homosexuals and hetrosexuals in the way they do many of their activities.

No, the word "Marriage" is not on the block to be auctioned off for anyones use to mean something that it does not already mean.

Homosexuality is a moral issue. It is not a right pertaining to marriage. So it should not be lumped there with natural rights. We have things given to us to overcome…weaknesses. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Children have the right to be brought up by two loving and caring parents. While we should all be compassionate to those who struggle with homosexuality and we must not succomb to the seductive appeasement to the demands of so few in society.

Frank overestimates his importance in the world. He has been part of the most destructive economic disaster in modern times. And his blatant lies blaming Bush Administration is so old…

Barney Frank is an American hero. I'm questioning his role on the banking committee, but for most of recent history, he's been in the minority. Also I give him some slack there as he did not create the mess of the housing crisis or of campaign finance (which ties the hands of many of our legislators to do the right things).

On civil rights, and gay rights he is 99.9 percent correct 99.9 percent of the time. (I'm not an absolutist.) He's plain-spoken and slightly vulgar and absolutely wonderful. He's clearly one on the brightest of our Representatives and gives me hope that one day we all will enjoy equal civil rights. I love our president-elect and he's another one who provides great hope. On the issue Frank discusses here, though, Obama made a mistake and so far has failed to correct it in any meaningful way.

It is wrong to support any leader, no matter how great, uncritically. Obama's greatness is yet to be proven, though I believe in it. It is equally wrong to tear down a great public servant like Barney Frank, just because he speaks honestly about Obama's error, even in the context of his own hopefulness for Obama's success.

I remember back in Mayberry when Andy and Ellie May were watching Ed Sullivan one night on the old Magnavox TV set. Ellie heard a strange noise coming out of the woodshed and she and Andy went out to see what was up. They found Goober strapped face down over a big barrel and Bawney Fwank had his face buried in Goobers red eye.
