Lieberman Faces Lowest Approval Numbers Ever

@ 10:20 am by Michael O'Brien

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) may be facing his lowest approval ratings ever, according to a new Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday.

54 percent of Connecticut voters said they disapproved of the way Lieberman is handling his job, while 38 percent said they approved. The numbers are the lowest approval ratings Lieberman has faced since the poll started tracking his popularity.

"This is the highest disapproval rating in any Quinnipiac University poll in any state for a sitting U.S. senator–except for New Jersey's Robert Torricelli, just before he resigned in 2002," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz.

Forty-two percent of those surveyed said Lieberman's support for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during the presidential election made them think less favorably of him; 43 percent of voters said it made no difference. 30 percent of those who supported Lieberman in his 2006 general election said they would now vote for someone other than Lieberman if the election were held again today.

Lieberman's colleague, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), also faces tough approval numbers. 47 percent of Connecticut voters said they approved of the way Dodd is handling his job, while 41 percent they disapproved. A 50 percent approval rating is considered healthy for incumbent politicians.

  1. I thought they'd voiced that opinion during his last primary campaign. He insisted that he knew the will of the voters better than themselves by registering and running as an independent.

  2. please CT vote Lieberman OUT….

He has switch from Dem to Repub to Dem to Repub to Dem…

Don't believe me look at his record

    2000 VP Candidate
    2002 Repub senate approval votes
    2004 Dem senate approval votes
2006 Beg Obama to support his Senate bid
    2008 Repub

Now he wants sympathy for voters. How are you an independent voice when you only go for the majority ALL THE TIME>…..

    GET HIM OUT

  3. The Senior Senator from Israel is just doing his job…looking out for his country and not representing the interests of the United States.

  4. I hope that first comment is taken down right away…you can take this one down with it…I despise Lieberman and don't like his never-ending support for Israel, but that is a racist, ignorant comment and doesn't belong here!

  10. I hope the voters do the smart thing next time around, and vote Lieberman out. After his incredibly shameful behavior during the recent election season, not only campaigning for McCain, but encouraging the belief or fear that Obama consorts with terrorists, etc., he should be removed from office by the voters at the very next opportunity. I'm ashamed of the Democratic leaders (I'm talking Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi) who act like Joe Lieberman is an asset to the Democratic party. They too should be voted out at the next opportunity. Enough of old cronyism in Congress! We want leaders who actually would put the good of this country first, and that is NOT Lieberman and his ilk.

    Comment by Janie from California — December 17, 2008 @ 2:13 pm

  11. Lieberman is so slippery it's disgusting.
Vote the slimebag out of office, or better yet, institute an immediate recall.
The man is downright dangerous and has entirely TOO much power. His stance on Israel is auto-racist to those of us who can see the scariness of this. He could single handedly stimulate WWIII.
Perhaps he'd like to move to the sunny southwest and move in with his buddies Cindy and Maverick in Sedona. He would have access to every one of the 9 residences and 13, non-hybrid cars. Just a thought…… Oh, and Gramm would make a 4th for Scrabble.

  13. Well folks, some of us "Crazy liberals", you know, the Dailykos crew, worked hard to get rid of Lieberman in 2006.
But the smart people of CT told us where we could go by voting him in.
And once again, like all issues (the environment, regulation, George W. Bush, etc.), you make fun of us, then come around when its too damn late.

The truth has a liberal bias, face it. Read Dailykos, know the truth.

  18. Look, CT liberals did our best to send his whine to Miami. In 2000 I voted for him six times for VP and destroyed 24 votes for his senate run. He might be a Chosen. My observation: he is the best Isreal Senator that they didn't elect. He's frozen in the past. As with Bush we in CT are in a countdown.

    Comment by bruce — December 17, 2008 @ 2:45 pm

  19. His time has come — and gone. By turning against Obama the way he did (he could have just endorsed McCain and have done with it but he practically slimed Obama) he earned the disgust of everyone who cares about this country.

  20. As a CT resident and voter, I apologize for the rest of my state! I was told by Mr. Dodd, when I complained about Lieberman keeping his Homeland Security chair, that "Senator Lieberman's seniority within the Democratic Caucus and his committee chairmanship are important for Connecticut, and I did not believe that the people of Connecticut should be punished for the political choices of one of its elected leaders." While I agree in theory, his actions this fall p!ssed me off so badly that I simply don't care…we'll get by, just GET HIM OUT!

    Comment by e w — December 17, 2008 @ 2:50 pm

  24. It's scary how subservient a lot of so-called liberals are to the worship of the state of Israel. That country maintains a state of apartheid that radicalizes thousands of fresh recruits for terrorist organizations like Hizbollah and Hamas. The rightwing, warmongering, racist nuts who run Israel loot the American treasury every year, demanding our money in exchange for "peace" hat never comes. They've even been caught SPYING on us. Yet, if you even QUESTION this, you're called an anti-semite. This wouldn't work without quislings like Liebermann. The man is a coward.

    Comment by Fernando — December 17, 2008 @ 3:03 pm

  25. We people in CT, the Democrats at least, did not vote for Lieberman. He lost in the primary and ran as an Independent and the Republicans voted him in, against their own candidate! Don't blame us! I can't believe his approval rating isn't even lower than it is.

McAncient wouldn't win,Lieberman campaigned against the Dems having a 60 seat majority. He's vile.

  30. 'Senator from Israel…' cute. Possibly astute. Because one might have difficulties with the policies of the government of Israel does not make one an anti-semite, any more than being opposed to the policies of George Bush makes one un-American. After all, there are Israelis that have problems with the policies of their government, too. But we digress. Lieberman has shown himself to be a true friend of nobody, and one who is not to be trusted with anything.

  31. Let Lieberman go to the GOP ranks, (doubt they REALLY want him either, but would take him just as THEY elected him last go round for the GOPs did not vote for one of their own party, but for Joe and THAT is who put him back in–his endorsement for Mac and P were just paybacks with thought they would give him a "proper" position. The Dems are proving themselves WHIMPS once again, they refuse to have much integrity for if they did, they would have let him slither away on out of the Dem caucus..he is NOT one to trust and has proven many times over why he can NOT be trusted !!! Balderdash and thensome to the lame excuses given as to why they felt it such a "good" thingy to keep him in the Dem caucus…Tht response by Dodd was pathetic and looks like he too needs replacementing !!!

  32. Unbelievable how this guy has played both sides of the aisle for fools. I was born a Jew but am now an atheist. It's not very hard to see that his true interest lies only with Israel and not the United States. I don't understand why the Connecticut voters keep voting this guy in. He is a traitor and a disgrace to the people he is supposed to represent, and should be known forevermore as Benedict Lieberman.

    Comment by dotmafia — December 17, 2008 @ 3:24 pm

  33. One third of Connecticut are as closed-minded and ignorant as the whole base of Republicans. They are so brainwashed that they do not realize that Lieberman is using their tax dollars for supporting Israel at the expense of their own country. Well, NH women were impressed by the crocodile tears of Hillary…and 48% are impressed by the empty-head Palin.

    Comment by Texancan — December 17, 2008 @ 3:31 pm

  34. Oh well. They were warned about LIEberman, could have checked out his less very disappointing record, and should have voted in Ned Lamont.

But of course, they believed the lies. And we all have to pay for their failure.

  35. Like most mainstream Dems I cheered for Gore/Lieberman in 2K. Sadly, what Lieberman has done since then has mostly degraded my opinion of Gore. The rest of us have gotten a good lesson about Joe, but Al should have known even then.

Then again, maybe this just shows growth on the part of the Democrats: We've gone from cynically choosing anyone we think can win to someone who can make a positive difference. If that's the case, then thanks Joe for educating us and I hope Pelosi and Reid will be close behind you on the way out the door.

I have to say that I also can't believe that the people of this state are so…(augh!) stupid!

Rell vetoed Medical marijuana against the will of the people. Liberman is a tool. Our last just got out of jail and is now a self dicribed 'motivational speaker' The mayor of Bridgeport CT is doing 9 years.

I do not support his stand on the Iraq war, but understand his reason for doing so.

  43. Its no surprise that both our Senators have low ratings. Sen Dodd (yet another member of our political royalf families) got caught with a sweet deal from the mortgage industry and is now vocally back peddling to cover this up. Makes me wish Baily was still running the state: at least he was up front about the games.

I admire Lieberman for going his own way but I not at all for his voting record.

  44. Calling LIEberman the best U.S. rep for Israel is not anti-semitic: the racists who run (but not the populace of) Israel are running a torturous, murderous, apartheid regime that the U.S. people have paid for with billions of their tax dollars.

Peace in the Middle East cannot be furthered by funding the Zionist racists. Kick Lieberman out because he is outmoded, lies, and should be honest and run as a Republican. Promote world peace by cutting Israel off of the funds they have been using to run their non-democratic and racist regime.

    Comment by trent — December 17, 2008 @ 4:39 pm

  47. Obama and the senate were not generous to let Lieberman keep his power. They made a deal with him to keep him voting with the Democrats. The first time he misbehaves, he's going to pay big time. Then, Connecticut would be in a difficult position, because they would have a senator who permanently had no power. And, he has no ability to vote his own conscience now, or make any demands for this constituents. He made an incredibly bad mistake in supporting McCain so publically, and he is going to pay one way or the other for as long as he is in public office.

  48. Gosh, so much hate, Are all liberals such haters? I thought we needed bipartisanship. Come on fess up, nobody on either side wants bipartisanship, unless it means the other side caving in to your beliefs. 51. Lieberman did everything in his power to make sure that a Democrat did not get elected. Just like his support for the nonsensical war in Iraq, he did this to protect Israel even to the detriment of the USA. Now he would have us attack Iran to protect Israel. More US deaths and billions more $'s wasted. He is un-American, not a Democrat and totally dishonest.
Might I suggest that he moves to Israel where he is very popular. We could fill his seat very quickly with someone who cares first about our country.

    Comment by Ian Crowe — December 17, 2008 @ 5:26 pm

  52. Sen. Lieberman won as an independent in 2006 not only because of Republican support but because of the "black box" voting that undermines democracy in the United States (and has spread to other countries, e.g., Mexico, the U.K.) Look at the final percentages as compared to exit polls and preelection numbers and it's obvious. Lieberman owes Rove and the Republicans for his seat. The irony is that with the Democrats now in majority they will not reform the democracy but will utilize the mechanism to deny Republicans any power for a generation, if ever. Hoist on their own petard is the phrase, I think. Some may say, "Good, couldn't happen to a better bunch, etc." but as one interested in a healthy democracy and a proper accounting of the popular will, I must say I disagree with that sentiment.

  56. I think it's definitely high time for CT to vote Lieberman out! He was a DISGRACE working for McCain [who ran a disgusting, dishonorable campaign especially with Palin as his 'voice' who was very polarizing along with the fact that he hired the very same people who smeared him in 2000 to smear Obama]. Joe ought to be extremely ashamed of himself for his unabashed critism of Obama during the campaign. It's one thing to have friends you admire and quite another to stomp on he very party you caucus with as well as heading several committees. Let's hope he is at least appreciative of Obama for not having him ousted from the party and for not telling Reid and Pelosi to take those committees away from him. He needs to resign. And I believe we MUST make Congress abide by TERM LIMITS. It seems to me that the longer these officials are in office, the more chance they have of corruption - see Ted Stevens. EIGHT YEARS ought to be more than enough time for them to serve.

  58. Boy, one read thru this thread and you can just feel how Lieberman will win yet again in CT. Many who pretend to be from Ct are lying. Ct voters like many Americans hate being told what they should or shouldn't do by "outsiders" and second, there are many Jewish people in Ct and its scary to see the hatred and bigotry from so many who misread support for an ally and a country where many of Ct residents have family living to be treason and not just the support that it is. These people may not like Lieberman, but they sure won;t take very well to all the BS accusations about Lieberman's loyalties. What a bunch of racist BS nonsense. So keep it up people, and all you'll do is assure Lierbman gets yet another term. Try beating him on the issues instead of his Jewishness … that just will not work in the State of Ct. And yes, I'm from Hartford.

  60. As a resident of Stamford, Lieberman's place of birth, I and my friends are going to do our utmost to see him turfed out of office. Seeing the back of him will give us greater joy than seeing Chris Shays shoe-horned out of here last month. Someone in an earlier posting refers to Lieberman as the Senator for Israel - some will interpret this as "anti-semetic" but to expose Lieberman as the self-serving, two-timing individual that he is, is quite appropriate. And it is obvious that he has used the platform given to him by the progressive democrats in Connecticut to focus more on issues in the Middle East (specifically those relating to Israel) and I for one did not vote him into power for that reason - in fact, to the contrary - I am sick and tired of the US supporting the Israeli government almost without question. Lieberman exemplifies all that is wrong with this unbalanced policy towards the Middle East. This is not anti-semetic - it is just that if you roll this into his flagrant support of John McCain, his financial support of republican Senators and his overarching self-centered, holier than thou disposition, I can frankly say, I have had quite enough of him and will work as hard as possible to get him out!

    Comment by Martin — December 17, 2008 @ 6:26 pm

  61. to comment 58 - you see, you can't win! Yes, there are plenty of jews in Connecticut, but this is one half-jew in Stamford who passionately dislikes Lieberman and wants him out of office as soon as possible. It is not anti-semetic to expose him for what he is. I would happily vote for Chuck Schumer, AND HAVE DONE SO when I was living in New York City. I would happily vote for Carl Levin, but I WILL NOT vote for Lieberman because he is a selfish, miserable effer who really doesn't give a toss about Connecticut and only cares about his greater glory and the state of Israel. Nutmeggers have gotten progressively more sickened by his behavior because he is an apostate who gone way of the broad tracks we expected him to work within when voting for him in previous elections. Of course, if the republicans fail to put up a viable candidate again, Lieberman may indeed win again as an independent. BUT I don't think it is going to work next time - his squalid game is shortly going to be up!

  63. The thing that gets me the most about Joe Lieberman is that he is constantly whining about how "supportive" he is of Israel and how we must all "support" Israel like he does. And the reason that bothers me so much is that I am convinced that the kind of "support" that Israel has been getting for decades from people like Joe Lieberman and the rest of the paranoid hawks is going to end up getting Israel obliterated. (You see, I have this crazy idea that if you are "supportive" of someone, you should actually do what will ultimately help that person to survive and prosper.)

    Comment by Patricia — December 17, 2008 @ 6:51 pm

  64. Hey Steven,

It isn't Lieberman's Jewishness that people don't like it is his foreign policy views that put the interest of Israel above the interests of the United States of America. The children of Americans from all over this country shedding blood for Israel. It isn't his Jewishness, it is his priorities that most Americans don't like. You play the anti-semitism card to get us to shut up. Why do we have to kill Arabs for the Israelis? Why do our children have to kill for Israel? The tide is turning in America and it isn't anti-semitism, it is anti-cold blooded murder on behalf of Israel. Todd from CT.

I am a 73 year old Jew who owes his allegiance to the country that welcomed his grandparents from the pogroms of Eastern Europe, the same country that enabled another descendant of immigrants to attain the extraordinary status of senator. But unlike that senator, I am an American first and foremost. Being A Jew does NOT automatically equate with being a Zionist.

  66. Leiberman is a religious fundamentalist and I think this underlies the majority of his decisions. In a way, he's an extremist because he attends "Rapture Ready" events with nut cases that look forward to WWIII, with the end result of Christ coming back and the Jews accepting Christ or burning hell, or so they believe.

I'm sure Joe doesn't believe this, but if millions are raised for Israel in this manner, so be it.

I can remember a time when supporters of Israel didn't include religious lunatics. A much more sane time.

  67. You Israelis masquerading as Americans are full of it. If anyone criticizes one of you, you cry anti-semitism. Go to Israel where you belong.

And Liebermann should take his sorry rump to Jerusalem and stop screwing around here in the U.S.

  68. I'm a CT Democrat who detests Joe Lieberman - a self-serving, sanctimonious traitor who cares about one thing and one thing only - Joe Lieberman. To have to watch that hypocrite praise Sarah Palin's "intelligence" and McCain's judgment on foreign policy as he trashed Obama, was sickening. Not until it finally dawned on the little weasel that his team was going to lose, did he start blathering about how he wanted to 'broker peace.' What a creep.

Oh and it wasn't the Democrats who put him back in the Senate in '06 - we wanted Ned Lamont. It was the Republicans. Mr "I love the Democratic Party" couldn't run as an Independent fast enough once he lost the Democratic primary. What a tool.

Only thing is, I liked Georgie. He was a patriotic American who put his country first. And Joe? Who really knows which country Joe puts first?

  72. Joe Lieberman would let the U.S. destroy every middle eastern country for the sake of Israel, and when we have killed off all of our own military and have no money left, and China is nipping at our shores, he will fly off to his home in Jerusalem. The reason he was stuck to John McCain like a fly to flypaper, is because he thought he could get him to bomb Iran.

  74. Why is it anti-Semitic to call the Senator from Tel Aviv, the Senator from Tel Aviv. The Democratic voters here in CT were not being anti-Semitic when they voted him out in the primary. It was the Republican party and supporters who decided to ignore the Republican candidate and to vote for Lieberman.
He is neither a Democrat or a Republican. He is an opportunist! And just so you know, the laws in CT do not allow for a recall. If there is some ordinance I missed, please post it and we'll start the paperwork.

  75. I am jewish and I think Lieberman is a disgusting scumbag. Does anti-semitism piss me off? Of course it does, and it's also why Lieberman won in 2006. However, this doesn't in any way shape or form excuse the disgusting policies and behavior of Joe Lieberman. He's a disgrace to America and to jewish people everywhere, the vast majority of which voted for Obama. Lieberman stabbed both the democratic party and the USA in the back when he went for Mccain, and his continued support of not only the war in Iraq, but also war with Iran, is downright stupid. We don't have the resources anymore to fight countries like iran, thanks to the idiotic Iraq war!

#63, right on the money! Supporting Israel doesn't have to mean war after war, it can mean supporting a peace process with the palestinians! America is in serious financial trouble right now, and can't afford more middle east wars. But try explaining that to the idiot Lieberman.

Any of you who ARE real anti semites, please just be quiet for a bit and don't help this jerk get re-elected.

  76. I moved to Connecticut just in time to vote against Joe Lieberman in the 1988 election where he ran a vicious campaign to the right of the incumbent Republican, Lowell Weicker. I've had the privilege of voting against him again in primaries and general elections in 1994, 2000 and 2006. Lieberman has always been on the extreme right-wing of the Democratic party. He is a founding member of the New Democratic Coalition and has served as Chair of the DLC and has been a loyal partner of the Clintons since their law school days. After 20 years, the people of Connecticut are just starting to catch on.

In response to Cliford's comment (52)I'm not sure what "black box" voting is but in 2006 we were still using mechanical lever machines here in Connecticut. I believe that they are the most tamper-proof method of recording the vote ever invented, but we since have been forced to switch to paper ballots and optical scanners. As to the polls, the Real Clear Politics closing poll average in 2006 was Lieberman, 49.8%; Lamont 38.0%. The election result was Lieberman 50%; Lamont 40%. It was not a stolen election, just a stupid electorate.

  77. in contrary to some of what the many racists/anti-semitics who inhabit this space write
the politics of Senator Lieberman have been just like that of George Bush detrimental to the safety and well being of both The United states and Israel, our war in iraq has allowed iran to conduct a proxy war against us taking a great toll. Our so called israeli support policies have been limited to sending u.s operated defence missles in exchange for israel concent not to attack iran… in effect this policies are the enablers of a future Nuclear armed iran
Wake up and smell the coffee there is no benevolent protection of israel here it is all simply self serving interests, our past presidents are on the payroll of the saudi's, the first plane to leave out of the u.s after september 11 was of saudi's, the head of the CIA gets drunk in the pool of a saudi prince and holds no secrets, in exchange for trinkets we get israel to fall into line of our interests or more exactly the interests of some of those who pay our top political brass big payouts when they leave office, senator Lieberman may have been serving many interests but the interests of israel are not among them

  79. I am Jewish. Lieberman is a turncoat. The rotten things he said about Obama were vile. He sucks up to that bigot Hagee. Hagee loves Israel, but hates Judaism. Evangelicals only support Israel because of Armageddon. The settlers, who have instituted apartheid, are financially supported by evangelicals, in the hopes it will hasten their sick beliefs. When settlers get into violent confrontations with Palestinians, they are egged on by evangelicals, because they want to spark Armageddon. We should not be players in their sick theatre. Arabs should be treated with dignity - that's what is wrong, and no one is willing to stand up and say "stop." Obama got 78% of the Jewish vote. Please CT, vote him out, and send him to Arizona with McSame.

  81. Joe you have lost the Zeitgeist of the moment. As an indie senator you were elected to be a rational compass in a bi polar party world. You have failed to be an indie in your support of a Mc-Palin ticket that veered from hyper over reaction to down right nastiness and right wing policies. You have nowhere to hide (inside a party) so are exposed the slings and arrows of your own poor decisions.

  82. Those supporters who would call others Anti-semite due their critique of Joe Liberman are doing themselves a great injustice. You cannot presume that Israel has an infallible role in what has transpired in the middle east, as any reasonable person would arrive at the conclusion that Israel has as much blood on their hands as the Palestinians. To shout and label others as Anti-Semite for saying the obvious only makes your argument seem more disconnected and asinine. People label him the Senator from Israel because of his strong support from ACPAC and his insistence that we deploy our nation's best and brightest to Iraq for the defense of Israel along with the rest of the neo-cons. When did you put being Jewish ahead of being American? News flash - Israelis don't consider any part of themselves Americans as they are a melting pot of many diverse jewish communities from around the world….Stop playing the fool already…your fellow americans will respect you more for the effort.

I believe that House speaker Nancy Pelosi's approval rating is even lower…I am from the state of CA and I absolutely do not agree with her form of politicking. I believe she is outdated and out of touch with the American people. She has no idea what is going on in the real world. CA has 1.5 million unemployed as of November which was in the local papers and our state has a monstrous debt. She costs the taxpayers of CA $480,000.00/month with her military jet and fuel traveling to and from CA to Washington D.C. That is quite an expense when our state doesn't have the funds….

  87. JOE LIEBERMAN AND HIS ANTI-PATRIOTIC LIES

I was Joe Lieberman's roommate at Yale for four years. I predicted then that he would be the first Jewish President of the United States.

Thank God, I was wrong. He is a compulsive, idealistic liar. He lied to the people of Connecticut and America when he broadcast commercials in 2006 when he said he wanted to bring our troops home. He again voted with President Bush to expand an unnecessary, unneeded, and immoral war against Iraq. He voted for the "surge" instead of supporting General Shinseki when he called for more troops at the beginning of the war. He has called people (like myself) unpatriotic for refusing to go along with the total, unbelievable ignorance of our "commander-in-chief" George W. Bush. Joe Lieberman has proven himself to be a suck-up, prevaricating jack-off. He is a total, monumental liar and a moral moron. I know the guy, so believe me. His sanctimonious persona only goes so far — the rest is superficial and tissue-thin (even with monumental jowls).

Joe Lieberman has proven himself to be a major-league asshole beyond doubt. Please expose his total assholery. Thank you.

(Incidentally, I really used to like the guy. He's just become too much of a smarmy, slimey liar and traitorous politician to support him any longer. Joe Lieberman has become a total whore-mongering asshole.) There is no room for sympathy for a person who has had a truly bloody hand in this debacle in Iraq. Joe and his family have been too cowardly to serve in our military from Vietnam to Iraq, but they still want our poor and our minorities to die for Bush's and his mistaken values. Remember, Bush, Cheney, and Lieberman were all too afraid or smart to fight for America. They wanted the poor and the minorities to fight and die for them. They are all cowards. Incidentally, both Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman have five deferments, so they didn't have to fight in Vietman. George W. Bush joined the "Champagne Unit" of the Texas Air National Guard (through political connections), so that he could protect the Mexican Gulf against communist sharks (thus avoiding any real combat). Any heroes here? I think not. We're talking about major-league Republican cowards. Are all Republicans cowards? I think not. Only their leaders.
