DAY'S END ROUNDUP

@ 5:19 pm by Michael O'Brien

The Supreme Court’s rejection of a suit alleging Obama is ineligible to become president due to his birthplace draws sighs of relief this afternoon on conservative blogs, while news of Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s (R) work to build up support for a 2012 White House bid is cause for criticism from the left. Also, the newly-announced financial troubles at several major news organization brings input from bloggers on both sides.

The “truthers” who promoted the effort are kooks for labeling opponents “anti-Constitution,” and the decision was unsurprising, Little Green Footballs declares. That the court refused the case despite having enough votes to force a hearing should tell truthers something about their claims, Hot Air’s Allahpundit argues, hoping that the Congress will also take the opportunity to clarify the Constitution’s “natural born” qualification.

Romney defrauded donors by telling them he’d use the money to support Republican candidates while really using it to support his own presidential ambitions, The Heretik asserts. Spending by Romney’s political action committee signals that he’s building support among key Republican leaders to curry favor for a 2012 race, Below the Beltway’s Doug Mataconis says. As is typical, Romney is trying to buy off Republican voters, The Reaction’s Michael J. W. Stickings claims, noting that Republicans may perceive Romney as transparent and optimistic like they did in 2008.

Also, The Tribune and New York Times’s troubles may be partly the fault of the economic downturn and dwindling circulation, but poor decision-making to leverage tons of debt on their organizations only made matters worse, Josh Marshall writes at TalkingPointsMemo. The falling value of the venerable news properties present an opportunity for conservative investors to step in and buy the distressed organizations and ameliorate perceived bias, Michelle Malkin blogs. But conservative alternatives like the New York Sun and Washington Times have never been profitable, Maha fires back at The Mahablog, arguing more imaginative management could make the Times profitable again.
