Paterson Wants Sen. to See 'Crises as Opportunities'

@ 3:35 pm by Walter Alarkon

New York Gov. David Paterson (D) shed a little bit of light on whom he might pick to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in the Senate once she becomes secretary of State.

Paterson said that he would be looking for someone who sees "crises as opportunities," according to Politicker.

Paterson, at the National Governors Association meeting in Philadelphia, again said that he wouldn't immediately choose a successor to Clinton.

"I think I can take time and make the right decision," he said.

Those mentioned as possible picks for Paterson include New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Brian Higgins, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Caroline Kennedy and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. All are Democrats.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.
  1. how about Rahm Emanuel. He doesnt feel any crisis should go to waste.

  2. I'd say the most interesting question is when will Hillary resign her Senate seat?

    1. If she resigns with enough time for Gov. Paterson to appoint a successor and have them sworn in before the swearing in of new Senators in January - that NY Senator would have an advantage (however slight) based on seniority.

    2. If she resigns before the confirmation hearings but fails to be confirmed, she is citizen Hillary Clinton.

    3. If Obama has information amounting to a neutron bomb with respect to Hillary and wants to use it during confirmation, and she has resigned before the hearings, he can fix her wagon a number of ways (via deep background leaks, cutouts) and still claim that he wanted her at Foggy Bottom.

    4. If the information in #3 were devastating enough, he could clear the decks for 2012 and get Hillary out of the Senate in one gaceful move.

    5. I'd pay good money to see this on Pay Per View.

  3. Wally, an interesting therory. But if she is Sec State it would STILL keep her from running in '12. What case could she make then against Bam Bam when she was PART of his adminstration?
