Obama's Mug on D.C. Subway Cards for Inauguration

@ 3:22 pm by Walter Alarkon

The subway system in Washington, D.C., is making fare cards featuring President-elect Barack Obama's image to commemorate his inauguration as the 44th president.

SmarTrip cards with Obama's smiling face will be available in January, Metro spokesman Stephen Taubenkibel told DCist. Regular fare cards marking the Jan. 20 inauguration will be available in late December.

Images of the Obama card were shown at a recent Metro Board of Directors meeting. See the mock-up below, first posted on DCist.

  1. Woo hoo!

May Dear Leader be exalted in his many forms.

  2. Have they done this for previous presidents-elect? If not, this is a blatantly partisan move by an organization funded with taxpayer money.

  5. All hail Obama the 1st - Dear Leader. Our own chairman Mao.

Does anyone at the Metro Board have a clue how this looks???

    Comment by Kojiro Vance — November 20, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

  6. Don't worry about DC taxpayer money Ippo. 93% of us voted for Obama.

    Comment by DCResident — November 20, 2008 @ 3:37 pm

  7. This article doesn't say if this same thing was done in 2000 and 2004 (or before that). If not, why are they doing it this year? Perhaps some follow up needs to be done with the DC Metro system.

    Comment by Daisy21 — November 20, 2008 @ 3:37 pm

  8. Trust me I am not a fan of Barry Obama. Adn am totally sick with the worship this empty suit is getting.

But what I think this is all about is the metro system trying to make a few bucks while they can. People will load some amount of money on these cards and they won't get used. Pure profit for the metro. It is like stamp collectors, the post office issues the stamp the collector buys it and never uses it, pure profit.

I am just jealous I don't have anything like that I can hawk to the dumb masses that can not get enough.

  14. Yeah too bad he can't pay for this whole " shindig " with his own campaign financing, leaving the taxpayers to do so.

    Ahhh…don't we all love change.

And yes…yes they can worship him even more.

    Comment by Randy Marsh — November 20, 2008 @ 3:43 pm

  18. Regardless of how you feel about President-Elect Obama, isn't it a bit ridiculous to print a full-color metro card when Metro is facing a budget shortfall? I mean I know it's a special day and all, but if they do this, WMATA needs to increase fairs to pay for this so that the regular commuters don't.

    Comment by Jason D — November 20, 2008 @ 3:43 pm

  19. This reminds me of all the photos plastered around third world socialist countries of their marxist leaders. It is called tax payer funded propaganda. We can expect much more of this type of thing.

    Comment by Denb — November 20, 2008 @ 3:44 pm

  20. What do you expect from a metropolitan area whose population is 55.6% African American.
Oh and DCResident… nice to know that there are at least 7% of the population there that has a brain!

  24. Let's all celebrate the Obama recession!!!

    Comment by Ibme — November 20, 2008 @ 3:45 pm

  25. In answer to have they done this before - no they have not. In fact, when National Airports name was changed to Ronald Reagan National Airport, they refused to change the station signs and maps because it would cost too much money. The metro board is blatently partisen.

    Comment by DC Employee — November 20, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

  26. How come they didn't take a picture of this SOCIALIST with a butt hanging from his lip? Kooool!!

    Comment by Daug — November 20, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

  27. Partisanship aside, you're absolutely right Jason…unless they think that they will sell more cards at the possibility of having his mug on it as a way to generate funds. But clearly, that should not be considered a holiday and should run on a normal schedule that day with rush hour fares all day long.

    Comment by Corey — November 20, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

  28. "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments." (RSV Exodus 20:3-6).

    Comment by Bill — November 20, 2008 @ 3:47 pm

  29. Where's the full name Barack Huessain Obama? Barry cozies up to terrorists so why not be proud of his birth name.

    Comment by Saddam Huessain — November 20, 2008 @ 3:48 pm

  30. It was not done in 2000 or 2004.

Thankfully, those Smartrip cards get demagnetized like no tomorrow.

It is just sort of weird. What if you don't want Obama on your Smartrip card?

    I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

    Comment by Circe — November 20, 2008 @ 3:48 pm

  31. Um, this is marketing 101…not to mention the fact that Metro needs money BIG TIME! If I am reading this correctly, they are for SmartTrip Cards which sell for 10.00 ($5.00 for the card and $5.00 fare for the system…).

Not partisan but opportunistic…. expected 4 million people at the event….at 5.00 a pop….20 million in revenue…which is probably what 19,500,000 in profit?

Comment by People Need to Get Over it... — November 20, 2008 @ 3:48 pm

  32. According to the Quran, idolatry or assigning partners to the One God (Arabic: shirk?) is an egregious sin. It is seen as different in type from all other sins and is categorized as the one and only categorically unforgivable sin. However, this is not meant to be understood in narrow terms referring specifically to graven images. There are numerous forms of "shirk", including subtle aspects such as arrogance and unbridled egoism. Depicting religious themes, and specifically God, is seen as inappropriate and unbecoming. Muslims believe, like Christians and Jews, that the human intellect is incapable of conceiving God and are encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad to contemplate the creation of God, not (the essence of) God. Some Shiites are more apt to use representation of religious figures in art, but these are never worshiped per se.

    Comment by Bill — November 20, 2008 @ 3:48 pm

  33. Perhaps the swearing-in should be at the Lincoln Memorial and Hussein Obama could walk on water at the Reflecting Pool to his own inaguration? And for maximum effect, he could weat a tattered robe and crown of thorns? Just a thought.

    Comment by Asylum Aleikum — November 20, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

  36. Anyone who reads this article should take the 30 seconds to Google the DC Metro system's current financial state. Metro officials estimate they will need upwards of 5 BILLION over the next 3 years to stay operational–NOT capital improvements–to simply keep the trains running.

Let's see a figure on just how much this antic costs.

    Comment by Concerned DC Resident — November 20, 2008 @ 3:51 pm

  37. The U.S. Treasury Department will be printing Obama bills pretty soon. Also, there's a sewage treatment plant near where I live having problems. It should be named after Barack Hussein Obama, just like the one somewhere out west being named after G. W. Bush.

  38. Metro did not ever ask me to submit my picture!

    Comment by John McCain — November 20, 2008 @ 3:52 pm

    Comment by RGB — November 20, 2008 @ 3:58 pm

  45. Because thats all you get from Obama - a BUS RIDE thru the ghetto! So all the ghetto low class people can see who they voted for and who will ruin this nation, making EVERYONE as broke as the low class so we ALL have to take a disease infested / spreading bus and risk getting shot because he will take away guns from the good people. He only wants his ghetto friends to have guns I guess. Criminals will always have guns no matter what law is passed!
Nice to have his picture to litter the ground with when cards expire so they can step all over his picture!

  51. Ya KNOW!!!…. Why is D.C. paying for all this stuff? They also are hiring extra police and security as well as many, many other expenditures for this big party…
IF OBAMA wants ME to help everyone with my taxes why doesn't HE first start helping his future community?
You can call it sour grapes all you want but his own wife…our future First Lady stated in a 60 minute interview …"we will help our own community in which we live…we always have and always will." WELL, Ms. Obama, you should first start with paying for this outrageous bash you will be giving on the Mall. Use some of that extra cash you have left over from the illegal donations.
I find it ironic that the taxpayers there have to pay for Obama but he himself can not see that that city is almost in ruin and already heavily taxed as is….AINTI-UP OBAMA!!! Shame on him!!!
    Wake up people!!!

    Comment by KJW — November 20, 2008 @ 4:03 pm

  52. Let the worship of our dear leader's graven image begin.

For those unfamiliar with Metro's delightful scam, SmarTrip is a card that costs money above and beyond the actual fare. It's required for parking, so people who drive to Metro are bound to have purchased unnecessary SmarTrip cards.

It makes me wonder how many of these babies B.O.'s fans will waste their money on. At least this particular version of the SmarTrip scam is aimed at those who deserve it the most!

  76. I am really confused. Why is everyone acting like his picture on there is any different from a t-shirt printed with a popular face to be sold for profit. Metro wants to make money since they don't have any - - its called simple marketing. Maybe this plan is to help fix those escalators.

And we have spent hundreds of years with George Washington's face on our money; a man who owned slaves himself and treated blacks as less than. That's what you need to compare to Saddam images in Baghdad.

  89. Chris Matthews said after the election it is his job to make sure Baracks Presidency is successful. NBC issues a "Yes We Can" The Barack Obama Story on dvd. DC has Obama's picture everywhere. You can say what you want, this Marxist has paid for his Presidency, bought many people in the process, received donations from Islamic nations overseas, and has convinced the Racist Democrats and many other zombies to vote for him so they can feel good about themselves because they elected a black man. I'm convinced mister "O" will try to change our Constitution so that he can stay in power longer tha 8 years. Just wait until all, but the wealthy celebrities, criminal politicians, and corporate owners will need public assitance, food stamps, government healthcare and housing because hyper inflation will put us all in the poor house. Barry "O" is correct. I will be hanging on to my religion and AR15 with lots of ammo. We'll need it when they come and try taking our guns from us. I expect a Civil War or at least some type of American Revolution sometime in the next 10-15 years.

  93. Wait, if this is such a momentous event, why is Barry's full name not printed on the card? Barrick Hussein Obama. Is he or Metro ashamed of his full name? After all, with such a solemn event, isn't it fitting that future collectors of this card have the full name on the card? Wouldn't this make the card worth more on e-bay or some future auction site? Hmmmmm…..

    Comment by Loisirene — November 20, 2008 @ 4:43 pm

  94. Relax all. Doesn't matter who is President, as you can see, it's business as usual. McCain, Clinton and Obama all got you and me to allow them to get paid for 18 months for a job they didn't do (Senators) in the hopes of getting a higher paying job with perks out the wazoooo and tens of millions guaranteed when they leave the Presidency. Can you do that? That's the BIGGER issue than the damn METRO card, or how much he's going to spend of your money on the party. That happens every election. Reality is the politicians know they're gonna get a check every two weeks - paid by you. They, not you, approve their own pay raises. Wake up people. Both sides. There is no change. There wouldn't have been any change with McCain or Clinton. You'll need an ornery, angry CPA or some kind of Ross Perot type to come in town and hold everyone accountable for every government agency and every program. We're not doing it. We just keep on taken it. And we'll do it again in four years and in eight years. They'll be new "hope and change" from both parties, and you'll get the same. It's game, and you and me aren't in it. When's the last time you called for term limits? Would you want to give anyone money without any accountability? That's what we keep on doing. Remember how the country was founded and why? Go back and take a look. Ben Franklin, Samual Adams and the boyz - if they could come back to live in Washington for one more day - would be flipping tables over in Congress and Senate. But we'll keep on taking it. We're just too busy working to pay our taxes and too busy with tonight's entertainment. Or are we?

Obama is my helmsman, I shall not want.
    He makes me to take public transport;
    He teaches me political correctness;
    He helps me stick it to The Man;
He leads me in the paths of victimhood for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Bush,
I will fear no evil, for Obama is with me.
His Hope and his Change they comfort me.
    He prepares welfare for me and tax increases for my enemies;
    He anoints my head with universal health care;
    I don’t have to think.
Surely war, global warming and sadness will disappear from my life,
And I will dwell in the paradise created by Obama…forever.

  228. I used to find it amusing that "democrats" (because I doubt that real Democrats behave in this fashion) call everyone who didn't agree with them or shared an opinion a "pig" or "hater" or "insert popular-but-dated 60's derogatory term here". And “republicans” call the opposite of them “stupid”,” hippie” or “insert smug holier-than-thou statement here”.
Now I find it intensely annoying. Because I am aware of the fact that we as a nation are on the downward spiral that faces every successful nation. Our population, as a whole, is ignorant, blatantly so, and anti-establishment.
It is ridiculous to hear that racism ended on that Tuesday. Racism is not real anymore. Hell, even Malcom X figured that out (and was subsequently murdered for beginning to preach it and I would suspect that MLK was murdered for similar reasons). It is perpetuated by the lines of black and white and what is PC and what is not PC. MLK's speech wasn’t about electing a black man or even white supremacy. His dream was that racism would be eradicated and we could see each other as equals - and that dream is never going to be realized as long as PC, division of race and the laws requiring special treatment of "minorities" all while granting a bonus to being a "minority" to seemingly compensate for the racist nation of America continues.
Racist…I have lived in many places in this world and nation and I can tell you this nation is above all things not racist. Most Americans know NOTHING of true racism. It is not a white on black thing. The moment you hear this kind of rhetoric you know you are dealing with the ignorant. Speak to a Rwandan who survived the great cleansing. Speak to an Armenian who survived the “civil war”. Speak to a Russian who survived the Ukrainian death fields. These are people who were subjected to a brutality never even close to realized by anyone in America with perhaps the exception of the American Indians (which to our credit as a nation, feel intense guilt for the things we have done to them and others). Feel lucky that we have never been subject to the horrors of true racism. Is black slavery the worst thing to happen in America concerning racism? Yes? Then how easily it is forgotten what the Irish were put through. I suppose anytime someone says “Patty Wagon” when referring to a police van should be brought up on charges of racism. The Irish burned down New York over the way they were treated, yet, Watts is somehow more significant? Why, because the Irish were white? It doesn’t count? (This is exactly my point and I am certain it was MLK’s as well.)
This brings us to "democrats" seething and huffing with incredulous and indignant posturing, insisting that because you are Republican or didn’t vote for Obama or criticize him in any way you are racist pigs.
It is a classic case of kettle and pot. Both of which, coincidentally, are black. (Which CLEARLY MUST be racist, because it is a negative connotation and the color mentioned is black! - another example of finding racism where there is none - trust me, someone will try to make this connection).
Look back at your statements, all of you. It is a mirrored image of what you claim to be against; hate, intolerance, immaturity, racism and indeed, stupidity.
Obama is a man. There are many, many things that should alarm anyone who is not merely patriotic, but incensed when true liberty is threatened. I don’t care WHO the candidate or Pres-Elect is, when they threaten liberty I am incensed and suspicious (just as I was when Pres Bush created the Dept of Homeland Security and empowered them with powers that allowed them to violate American freedoms).
Intense reaction to liberty even being perceived as being threatened is what made America the greatest country in recorded history. The willingness to defend liberty as a god-given right - and most amazing still, the fact that America will fight and die to defend that right for other nations, complete strangers.
THIS, is not racism. THIS, is not hate. THIS, is nothing to be ashamed about.
Racism and hate is manufactured in this country to sell both sides that are gullible enough to swallow it whole and blindly.
Rhetoric is dangerous. It is the Kool-Aid from which too many drink. Perpetuated by ignorance and apathy.
Our nation's youth has been failed by the system. Political correctness has neutered our greatness and bred the very thing it is "intended" to eliminate. All the while breeding it to an intensity that boils over with great frequency.
To be angry because we as a nation, and a people are not perfect. To begrudge our mistakes when what we have accomplished for ourselves, mankind and the planet should dwarf our indiscretions. To swallow whole what any media propagandizes without taking a moment to think upon it critically or at least give it a cursory splash of skepticism. These things have ruined us. And each side blames the other all while committing the very same "crimes" they purport to hate the other side for.

So that tends to make me believe that he would not approve of the way our society has mangled his dream. Also keep in mind that the Voting Rights Act of 1964 was passed by REPUBLICANS. Most Democrats of the day, (including Senator Albert Gore Sr. (D) Tennessee and J.W. Fulbright (D) Arkansas) voted against it along with many other democrat senators. So if any group should be credited with Barack Obama ascension to the White House, it should be the REPUBLICANS of 1964, who were the ones who passed the bill, thereby starting the ball rollo where we ar at today.

  269. Because DC is in love with Barack Obama. The city voted 93% for Obama, Innaguration day is sold out, people are renting their houses out for 20 thousand dollars here, they are cleaning up the streets (police on double and triple shifts like Ive never seen before here, even when this was the murder capitol), there has never been this much publicity in the city about a president elect to begin with. If you have a problem with it, you're just hating. We're getting out of one of the most hated administrations and moving to the promise of big change. The World is in love with Obama, well most of it anyway, naming mountains after him etc. but with the added publicity comes increasing threats from domestic neo-nazi inbreds etc. And Reagan was one of the least popular presidents in the DC Metro Area. The Airport name change was controversial to begin with because Washington also stood for the first President of this Country.

In the interest of fiscal responsibility I would suggest that we quit spending money on naming anything after any politician, quit making commemorative stuff funded by taxpayers and show a little discipline with the taxpayers' money.

Oh, that's right. It's patriotic to pay more taxes and we need to spread the wealth around a bit. I guess 0 really meant to take it from us and spread it around these government-funded agencies for his adoration.

I'm sick of all of them. Time to clean out Washington and restore our republic and our land, lest we lose the republic our founders gave us.

    Comment by Jon24 — November 21, 2008 @ 5:37 am

  276. Big Daddy DK I'm not the one who said DC residents solely paid for it because I realize thats not true. But compared to what DC residents are spending on state taxes (higher than anywhere else) and the rising cost of metro, gas prices in the city , lack of representation in the city, the higher cost of living there, 2nd longest commute time in the nation forcing many to take metro, they're alot more entitled to have a say in what their transportation system does. AIG is pressuring Metro for money which is less than what AIG Paid off a former CEO recently, but more than what Metro had to pay back at the time.
As for comparing it with Dictators in Socialist countries, it's not Obama or his administration forcing this on people. Its metro trying to attract attention to his inauguration, make money off the millions who will be in the city trying to collect these. There's a big difference…don't make a dumb statement and call others dumb, you sound like a drama queen, the current administration has done quite a bit wrong, has no idea what to do with this crisis, and we have someone whose making preparations to get us out of this mess, yet you want to call a government funded company's push to make a quick buck, the end of America???

    Comment by Jimbizzy — November 21, 2008 @ 6:50 am

  277. A big difference between these fare cards and totalitarian portrait propaganda à la Castro, Hitler, Mao, Stalin, et al is that Obama was actually elected by a majority of the voters in a free and fair democratic election (as hard as that may be for some to accept). Obama is immensely popular in the Northeast Corridor, and these cards will sell like pretzels and beer in Philly. The Metro authority would be financially remiss and negligent not to capitalize on this event, especially with the economy as bad as it is after eight years of Bush-Cheney tax-borrow-and-blow-up-the-world economic policy.

If there never were George Bush fare cards (and I'm not even sure there weren't), it's because no one would have bought them. Not having won a majority of the votes in either election (as hard as that may be for some to accept) and being very unpopular in this part of the country, there was always plenty of parking at both Bush-fils inaugurations. And since Republicans don't believe in public transit and therefore only use it when they have to, there would have been no financial incentive or market-based reason to print special commemorative fare cards.

When Obama is inaugurated, there will be so many people that driving will be out of the question, and public transit will operate at or above full capacity all day. People will end up walking and biking miles just for a chance to get close–not because there's been some kind of totalitarian / socialist / Islamist coup carried out by a Trojan horse candidate but because Obama's election was historic. The White House was built by slaves just 200 years ago. His election shows that Americans are ready to throw off one more mental shackle that has been keeping this country from achieving its true potential for hundreds of years.

  282. Sven if you really think racism in this country is dead, look no further than Mr. Cheer's comment. He along with many others, including those in positions of power, still have a racist mentality. And you're really undermining slavery and its affects if you think the forced seperation of families, lynchings, rapings, whippings for days, kiling in cold blood for disobedience, laws against learning etc. for 200+ years isn't so bad…you're also neglecting what went on for the next 100 from sharecropping, to kkk, more lynchings, burnings, Jim Crow. Emit Till, police brutatlity, dog attacks, and what continues today with a judicial system that obviously targets the same said minority group.

Just 12 years ago many golf courses were finding ways to keep blacks out by telling them you had to be a club member and registration was closed. It took Tiger Woods to change that. What about everything you don't hear, from the good old boys network still present at many jobs in middle management to the the horrible education system in many black urban systems, where the crews, sets hoods can run wild. Like 2 public schools in DC reported (Ballou and Dunbar) to have already had 70 violent incidents each. At HBCU's its very different, but in a broke single parent household in an urban environment, where you can become the main source of income at 13 and feel you can justify needing gun to protect yourself and your family, and are grown, you're probably not looking at school as a way out, if you're even thinking about the long term.

Affirmative Action is still needed, and White Women are the largest minority benefiting from it. I don't know if its fairly implemented, because maybe they should use income as more of a factor than race for setting quotas, but that may encourage more to lie on their forms, or use uncles or aunts residence etc. This may be the best way they could set it up so it did something. Maybe the black community should've reached MLKs dream in 40 years, and back then it looked alot more reasonable, until the influx of and the War on Drugs (aimed mainly at that community and the fathers in that community, and not the Bikers using and selling meth, CEOs on coke etc.) set it back another 30. I would credit that alot more than a PC or non PC environment where Kramer can or can't say the N word and think its acceptable.

I think this administration will make good progress for all communities. The democrats generally have good ideas like a 3 year limit on welfare under the Clinton administration, and they won't leave funding behind like Bush's No Child Left Behind. Depending on those gains, in 10-20 years if you're up to date on the status of the black community, I think you along with most Americans will agree quota programs can be done away with (even if they were benefiting all non White Males, and all females..which does benefit white males in 2 family households).

Smart Cards were in their infancy when Bush was elected. I wouldn't be surprised if they put someone else's face on it next time someone new is elected, especially if it makes profit this time, which it probably will.

And Nightrider, to call him a house negro shows your ignorance. You're repeating a phrase from a major terrorist leader. And would a house negro really give up years of his life to help the poor community in dangerous south side Chicago when he could be making millions on Wall Street? And Im guessing you got robbed blind (by big Businesses supported by the Bush Admin [Haliburton even ran by Cheney]), voted for, and bent over for Bush, twice…But when your new negro overlord promises to do the opposite, for you and 95% of Americans, rather than support him, you would prefer to continue bending over so you can support someone a little whiter.
I don't think all or even most McCain voters felt that way, they felt strongly on issues like Abortion, differently on the War, or better about his experience. The logic behind your argument doesn't reflect any logic however..

  291. avgjoe…Marion Barry did alot for the majority of the cities people, starting with his actions in the Civil Rights Movements. Later making room for many blacks to advance to prominent positions in DC government, and also forcing companies in the cities to abandon their good old boys network of many unqualified whites ordering blacks with degrees, who were more than qualified for their positions. Unlike Anthony Williams he did not cut jobs of hundreds of teachers in a failing school system to throw money at a Baseball Stadium. He did not make moves to gentrify the city. I don't condone what he did with cocaine but it was the opportunities he provided for a mostly black city that got him reelected years later, and he lost the when he ran immediately after the scandal. The city forgave the hero who once took a bullet from a muslim extreme terrorist in the 70s. Of course the government stepped in following his election and stripped him of his power to run the city. But he's not some brainless crackhead zombie, the man is still Ward 8 council member, always on DC public television involved in or running something positive. And he seemed to have his wits about him when he ran for reelection.

Barrack Obama has no reason to be ashamed of his name, it is just a name. He is not responsible for what his mother choose as his middle name nor does it mean that he is in any way Muslim. 294. The article in the Post this morning makes this much clearer. Metro is not spending lots of money for the regular fare and smart cards, they are making them available for $10 with no value on them - this is a significant markup from the normal card and strictly a money making proposition just like selling post cards in a gift shop. I, too, figured this was just the left leaing board of Metro choosing who to celebrate until I got the full story, but that's not the case. I have followed Metro board pretty closely for a while, though, and wouldn't be suprised if they were actually losing money on each card because they aren't as much liberal in their management decisions as they are incompetent.

  317. Blog? No thanks, not enough time to keep an opinion page. "Racism" as it stands will continue to perpetuate itself as long as the talking heads keep the ignorant (white, black, hispanic, etc)believing it is around every corner.

Let's talk about the black side of racism and how it self perpetuates.

"African-American". That self inflicted term is the king of perpetuated racism. It immmediately seperates any black American from the rest of us. Two things happen here. One, the term indicates you are NOT American and two, it further indicates that only white people are American. How the hell do you have a successful community when the very words used to describe ourselves are divisive? — you don't. Anyone that tells you otherwise is a victim of their own ignorance.

MLK wasn't talking about making it fair for blacks. He was talking about making us all a family. The longer we listen to ignorant, self-serving talking heads like Jessie Jackson, Louis Farrakan(sp?) and so on. The longer people point to an individual white man and say his actions are racist simply because it looks like he is hurting a black man and then declare racism alive and well, the longer we will fall victim to this kind of bigotted drivel from both sides.

200 Years of slavery? Slavery was being worked against the moment it started. The biggest victory over slavery was the British government banning the slave trade. That is right, white guys. Possiblely the whitest nation on earth and the most powerful at the time. This would not be the last major effort. Keep in mind that although the Civil War was not fought over the slavery issue, there were 10's of thousands that left their families and died in one of the most brutal wars in human history because they believed that it was wrong. White men.

…and as long as you perpetuate the idea that we are a racist nation you are pissing on them, pissing on greats like MLK, and pissing on all of us.

I criticise Obama not for being a black man. I criticise him for the very reasons I crititcised Bush - his policies are dangerously close to violation of individual liberty. I already despise Bush and those who voted the Patriot Act. I trully hope that I will not have a similar reason to despise Obama.

…and should I choose to despise him for his actions then I will damn well do it for my reasons, none of which come even close to the color of his skin.

HuSAME just read his words. This empty suit is nothing more than a figurehead. Good luck to him.

The only difference between seeing all the white guys' faces on money and statues is that they actually accomplished something to earn the reverence. HuSAME has accomplished nothing, and he is being treated like a hero.

  320. What hurts the bigots and supremacists most is they simply can't stand the fact that their color differs from that of the President's elect. This is why they are so inflamed and angered because they never believed that it would happen in their lifetime or for generations to come. Reality is striking them very hard, but they still stubbornly refuse to accept it, they are too cowardly to don on white robes and hoods to burn crosses so they anonymously use pseudonyms to spew their hateful rhetoric that smirks of their supremacist beliefs that is not that much different from that of age old supremacists who believe that others are stupid, less intelligent or inferior and who are only too keen to invoke religion to justify their stance as the many postings of blasphemous writings demonstrate. They belong to a sickened segment of a generation that is consigned to a future of bitter gripping till they meet their maker for a majority of Americans have made it clear that they are far more intelligent not to fall for the divisive politics of race, religion and pure hate that these wayward groupings fail to recognize as being the cause of their colossal electoral failure.

  321. Steffy thanks for toning it down, but the same questions these Obama supporters were asked about what legislation he had passed, if asked of a random McCain Supporter, Hillary supporter or any candidate supporter of their candidate the average joe probably couldn't answer you.
If we're grouping supporters by association with the average joe supporter we see on tv or posting here, we had McCain people at rally's thinking Obama is Arabian, a good percentage of Americans thinking he's a Muslim when he has a Reverend, and people here saying he's going to walk around with a towel on his head. Based on that I'd have to say on average the anti-obamas sound alot more ignorant and out of touch than those pro-obama.

Now for the informed on both sides, there's been a fair amount more of actual facts presented in his favor, and I'd say he shot down just about every charge leveled against him in the 3 debates. I think alot here are just mad at the support he's being shown worldwide like getting Mountains named after him. A socialist is not going to get the backing of so many long standing capitalist economists.

  333. Sven, the facts are the facts. I don't choose to call America racist, I view it as a progressive society. However those who harbor racist views still exist in this country, but they are well within the minority, however can often be found in positions of power, especially in the judicial system. If you think that makes this a racist country overall, then you and I differ on opinion. I love this country and feel it has overcome the racism felt by many time and time again. That doesn't mean racism isn't still present, and its affects aren't still felt within this country.

I agree with you on the African American issue. There was a time when Blacks said, say it loud I'm black and I'm proud. I don't think Blacks are the ones forcing African American down everyones throat. It is more the Overly PC afraid to offend anyone. I've never met a black who refused to be called a black man or woman. Now when you say that Black Guy over there, they may think you mean something different, and harbor them ill will, just as if a group of blacks were to point and congregate saying, that white guy over there. So saying the African American gentleman over there, is the equivalent of saying the Caucasian Gentleman over there.

I don't think King was opposed to affirmative action in the real way it operates, but when it operates in the way opponents of falsely represent it (if it ever really does) he would oppose it. http://academic.udayton.edu/race/04needs/affirm25.htm has some statements from him on the issue.

I think you're one of the informed on the other side, though I do question which policies of his you feel violate civil liberties, in the way Bush disregarded the constitution. I dont think you could mean the return to Clintonian tax rates for the 5% wealthiest americans making over $250,000/yr, and continuation/increase in tax cuts for those making less than $200,000/yr. So what is it?

they were ridiculed and demonized from the moment they won the election, so don't come with this pity party BS. the democrats and liberals shall reap what they sowed…which was the division of the country as has not been seen since the Civil War.

do i hopr barack does a good job? of course…my life depends on it. do i have high hopes that he will? not really. why? because he has no record of executive experience, no accomplishments, and all of the philosophies he espouses are anti-capitalism.

  336. lkindred:

    A. Obama is going to allow the current Bush tax cuts to expire, which will result in taxes going up for ALMOST EVERYONE in this country who actually pays taxes, not just that "richest Americans" group the Democrats love to refer to in order to perpetuate their class warfare rhetoric. Obama will not call this a tax increase, however. He will say that the expiration of the Bush cuts are a great victory for middle America, and you'll be hard put to find any media outlet that will factually analyze the impact of it.

    B. He and his freinds in Congress will then break the news to you and everyone else that we aren't going to be able to provide anywhere near the "tax cuts" he promised due to the state of the economy. They will, perhaps, find it within their wisdom to "reduce taxes" for the 40+ percent of Americans who don't actually pay any federal income taxes in the first place. They will direct the IRS to distribute "rebate" checks to people who haven't contributed any tax money from which to rebate.

    C. On the issue of moving to a "communist country"… If you understood what the terms "communist" and "socialist" really meant, you'd never have made that statement. In fact, we will all be treated to something much more akin to communism by simply staying here. Communism and its lesser cousin socialism are based on a forced redistribution of resources - a mandatory "common holding" of wealth if you will. This is exactly what the most left-leaning Democrats want to do. They wish to make themselves the chief arbiters of who has too much and who has too little, and forceably reallocate wealth as the see fit. Of course this never applies to them. Most of the elected Dems who subscribe to this belief are multi-milliionaires and more, Obama included. I dearly doubt that you'll be treated to the same lobster and caviar fare the Obamas enjoyed from their hotel rooms during the campaign.

    D. Can you really say you ever honestly advocated "giving Bush a chance", as you ask us to do with Obama? By the tone of your postings, I serioulsy doubt it. Save your self-righteous lectures for standards you've actually held yourself to.

  342. lkindred - first you mentioned statues and pictures, not cards. I don't really care about smartcards. If DC Metro thinks that will sell more, fine, that's capitalism (ignoring the government money they get). If he wants a monument he can try to accomplish something great - he might even succeed. I doubt Bush (either one) will get a monument in DC, for good reason.
Now as to what Bush did before the White House… let's try being the Governor of Texas (elected twice). That's called executive experience, actually running something. Obama has been the most inexperienced person ever elected to the office he is about to step into. He has 0 executive experience. The only leadership I'll give hims props for is running what looks to be a great family… something harder than ever today. Otherwise, he has done nothing of note, never running an economy or a company. Nothing. That is the problem many of us have with him. He has no history of deeds, no legislation of note on a national level (he barely even got started in the Senate). All we have are his promises to give everything to every body.
I truly hope he is a good President because that is what is best for this country. But I hope he is America's President, not a "citizen of the world" (as he claimed to be in Berlin) President. Socialism (or at the least Nationalism of the economy) is all I have heard him preach. His speeches came with a teleprompter. The crisis during the Presidency do not. As Biden said, the Presidency is no place for one the job training.

The place is a dump for the most part anyway. A TOTAL DUMP. Let's see: Obama destroyed campaign finance laws with his 650 million raised, we don't know where much of it came from… overseas? He hung with a black nazi for 20 years. His wifey was a hater of America despite being a racial quota winner to go the best schools in America and pulling in about $300,000 a year. Yeah, Africa and Haiti offers such things for "people of color."( love that BS, PC line.) So the dumpy DC where if you make a wrong turn you can get your head shot-off by an Obama "voter" wastes more money to shove political correctness down our throats. Now the "mystery man" will have to LEAD. No more BUSH BLAMING in a year or two. Don't want to hear it. DC wasting more money? What is the shock. There wasn't much to like besides the comedy of it and approval ratings showed it: http://www.hist.umn.edu/~ruggles/Approval.htm
This administration has been one of the most bumbling in years and will go down in history as such with good reason. Bush Sr. was a capable knowledgeable intelligent man and a damn good president. His sons administration led us into one of the most unpopular wars worldwide ever, on lies and misinformation, when we had a real threat to deal with. There's a reason why his approval ratings have dropped so low since 9/11, other than the media poking fun at him worldwide.

As far as us moving to a communist country under Obama who has promised to ease the tax burden on 95% of americans, and return those making over 250,000 to what they paid in the Clinton years, thats as much of a stretch if not more, than saying we were headed for Facism in the corporatist trickle down Republican Administrations. And its really more of a stretch since that pro big business interests, de-regulation, run wild, hand them a blank check and let them do whatever they want with it mentality is what brought on this economic crisis.

Let me get this straight… you're claiming that conservatives are calling liberals hateful because they don't agree? That conservatives are somehow oversimplifying or misclassifying disagreement as hate? Where have you been for this election?! Every voter who did not sing the praises of the Most High and Worthy Obama was labeled as a racist. The only reason the media could come up with for any potential Obama loss was that the country was racist. Pay no attention to his utter lack of experience, his constantly wavering views, his resolute refusal to release any pieces of information about himself… a vote for McCain was a vote for hate, according to the pseudo-journalists. So for a liberal to make any sort of claim that conservatives are misrepresenting dissension as hate is almost comical.

  360. Biggest landslides in history? Um, is this your first year voting? There have been much bigger votes that could be actually termed landslides. Obama won with just a slightly larger popular vote than Bush did in 2004. That's not a "landslide." And it also isn't a "mandate" on his policies (which I remember distinctly being told when BUSH won by that much in 2004). I'm sure many voted for Obama FOR his policies but a large majority who voted for him simply did so because he just wasn't "the other guy." Please, let's not delude ourselves into thinking the country is screaming for hope and change to socialism. The hard left seems to think it has many, many more supporters than it actually does.

    Comment by Aries4 — November 21, 2008 @ 10:56 am

Do we know how many Americans actually pay income taxes? It's not 95%… anyone have a guess? Only 40% of Americans pay income tax, folks. So for Obama to "cut" taxes on 95% of Americans is actually code-speak for welfare to a portion of the population who pays nothing into the system in the first place.

As for facism, perhaps liberals should actually look up the definition of what "facism" means before they toss around that term. Facism has been a hallmark of the liberal/progressive movement of the 20th century.

"Fascism is a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition."

How else would you describe liberal educational policies (i.e., suppression of religion and any origin views other than evolution), the fact that McCain voters were labeled as racists while 98% of black voters were simply voting their conscience, the coming attack on the free speech of talk radio, the forcible balance of economic classes through the tax system, etc.

As for returning the 250,000+ bracket to the Clinton levels, have you ever even researched what happened to the federal revenues in the first two years of the Bush tax cuts? No? They exceeded the estimates by a wide margin. By cutting taxes on the evil rich, the government made more money. The only reason we're in the fix we're in at the moment is because government can't stop itself from getting involved in business and from overtaxing. As Reagan described government tax policy under the liberals, "If it moves, tax it… if it moves too fast, regulate it… if it stops moving, subsidize it."

    Comment by Maximus — November 21, 2008 @ 10:57 am

Not saying he is not a smart guy but he is grossly inexperienced. We will see that rather early. Once we are over the "wow, we voted for a "brother from a white mother" crap, well, the smoke will clear and the whitey liberals and those just sick of Bush( not a Bush supporter) will actually analyze the guy. No more slick lines or blaming Bush for everything from global warming to people waking up late for work. Once the "Bush jr" issue is finally out of the minds of people, well, that will be the true test of this guy. And for those whitey liberals… you did your good deed…. now get back to your hyper-segregated neighborhoods. LOL.

  363. Jimbizzy - Oh and the government forcing banks to make risky loans (CRA anyone?)and then saying "Oh, Fannie and Freddie will back it up!" had nothing to do with it? Please, government interventions in the market brought most of this on us, and yes, lack of regulation (which McCain was pushing to have, BTW) exacerbated it.

And please explain to me how you lower taxes on 95% of Americans. Seriously. About 40% of Americans don't even pay taxes, so how in the hell do you lower taxes? A rebate check/refundable tax credit IS wealth redistribution and that IS socialism, if not communism. And buying stakes in banks and other industry, that is pseudo-nationalism and most scary of all, is a bipartisan (mostly liberal) effort. Based on all the things he said during the campaign, Obama will only accelerate the process.

  364. Jimbizzy, if you're going to lecture me at least read my post!!!!! I never said the media didn't give Bush a chance. I was referring to poster likindred who was condeming non-Obamaites for not giving Obama a chance. Nothing I said was in any way related to the media.

On this communist/socialist subject…Obama and his surrogates have changed their vague threshold for who does and doesn't get their promised tax cuts so many times it makes my head spin. There's ill intentions behind the nebulous nature of their definition of "rich" - and no I'm not anywhere near $250K myself. However, the individuals and businesses who do make that much already pay a hugely disproportionate share of taxes, and a huge chunk of the Americans who (as best we can tell) will get Obama's tax cuts don't pay any federal tax at all.

Yes, lack of oversight did have some role in our current mess. But so did liberal pressure on banks and Fannie and Freddie to give out zillions of loans to folks who couldn't afford them under the banner of "fairness". Funny how that doesn't get talked about too often.

The fact that you would up the "Clinton years" as something to strive for tells me all I need to know.

You are exactly right. METRO is facing a serious budget crunch. This is a great way to raise funds for them. I'm sure they'll do it again after future elections. The marketing genius who thought of this deserves a raise.

Clearly most of the comments are from non-DC area people who don't understand the $5 SmartCard fee.

    Comment by Majorman — November 21, 2008 @ 11:07 am

  368. Of course if the DC Metro folks were just a bit more forward thinking (and economically savvy) you could offer two cards, the regular one and then one with Obama's visage. Tack a $0.25 or $0.50 surcharge on that puppy and make some money. As long as it is legal to do so, you avoid some of the controversy while making some money off of people's love of the guy and the historical significance of the moment. Who knows, save it and it might be a collector's item one day.

    Comment by NYJustice — November 21, 2008 @ 11:15 am

  372. Jimbizzy, for clarification regarding : "If you think that makes this a racist country overall, then you and I differ on opinion. I love this country and feel it has overcome the racism… "

I do not feel the country is racist. I dealt with people calling me a "Jew-Burner" because I am german and my family fought in both wars (One against and one for) and I am proud of my heritage. Never once did I decide that by the actions of a few in my personal life that this nation was overrun by bigotry. Niether did my grandfather who spent two years in an American POW camp until he was sent home to Germany. So impressed with this country he was that he returned with my family.

People who undermine this nation's greatness because of the opinions or the actions of a few are the cancer that will destroy this great society.

Progressive? Of course. Progress is what makes the country successful and great.

AS a note I am tired of "African Americans" constantly shoving slavery down people's throat. Using it as a platform to "right" the "wrongs". No man can walk the line of progress while looking over his shoulder.

We are a progressive nation and as such we should be moving forward, not held down by our coat-tails by self-serving instigators who number so few it boggles the mind to see the influence it has over the teeming masses.

World War II was fought because the people of Germany felt that the world owed them for abusing them after WW I ( a war started by France, for France at the expense of everyone else). It wasn't until HItler realised this while sitting in jail recording his thoughts in Mein Kampf that it was used as the basis for his rise to power - democratically. Hitler's brilliance was realising that a people who feel victimised will rise up in anger once you give them an enemy they can touch and feel. And so enter the atrocities against "communists", Gypsies, the infirm, the elderly, the "criminals", the blacks and the Jews.

All from a guy who was as charasmatic as Obama, preaching "change" and promising to right the wrongs against the "downtrodden".

My grandfather realised what was happening and left Germany, only to fight against our country we loved so dearly and kill our own.

Racism? Division? Yes, I know plenty of it. I know the pain of it and I know the destructive power of race-politics and class-warfare.

Ignorance is not the excuse, it is the cause.

  374. Every time I follow a link from Drudge I am embarassed by the hate and vitriol I find. Obama is the 44th President of the United States. 90 some % of the people in DC voted for him. A majority of them are Black. Why wouldn't the Metro do this as a money making idea? Why shouldn't the majority of Americans who voted for him and are now waving flags ( a symbol of our country which seemed for at least 8 years to only be for Republicans) be proud that an intelligent thoughtful man who we believe in is President-Elect? Polls show dramatically that Bush is reviled. Foreign leaders won't shake his hand. Go out of the country and you have to apologize for Bush's actions. And still you want to condemn a man who clearly wants to make the country better. Before he has started. You blame the recession on him! What?! You call him socialist when he is clearly signalling a move toward the center. No wonder people like me can't understand where your feelings come from and call you racist. I don't know if you are racist, but I know you are angry and to my reading not at all thoughtful. I for one am happy to be proud of my nation and hopeful again. And the 4 million people who come to DC from around the country on January 20, maybe they'll help fund the DC Metro. Nothing wrong with that spreading the wealth.

    Comment by David — November 21, 2008 @ 11:23 am

  375. Bravo Sven. I am sure the talk of things over 100 years in the past is especially angering to someone whose family immigrated here after our Civil War.

It angers me to hear as well, when my family came from a line of tobacco farmers who didn't own their land and were instead sharecroppers here in the South, right up to my grandparents.

People need to look at the present and the future. The past is a warning, in many cases, of what could happen again should people continue to hold grudges against the ancestors of the people next to you. And that goes for people white, black and every other shade you see.

I have noticed that Obama is of mixed race but I didn't vote for him because of that. I voted for him because I thought he was someone new and "fresh" and could help unite the country inside and out. I thought his healthcare plan would help to ensure that kids are not out here sick and dying without medical attention. Everytime something happens in other countries, we pour our money into helping them when we are not even willing to help our own here on U.S. soil, this bothers me. I voted for Barrack Obama because I feel he at least understands the American people and will be fair in make decisions that affect billions of people..not just the rich.

Now, on to something else which also appears to be on-topic, but it is a question.

I would like those who purport that Obama is about change and that is why the majority (albeit a small majority, a 6% difference is NOT huge by any means, especially when you consider how badly the republicans conducted themselves the past 8 years) voted for him.

The way things used to be… and here I thought you were progressive. Would this be the Clinton years where he ignored threats of terrorist to this country or was it the time he spent playing around with interns in the oval office? Or could you be reaching back to Jimmy Carter and his double-digit inflation gift? Yup, good 'ol days. Inflation like that is surely the CHANGE we need and I still can't get enough of 21% prime rates.

Oh and on your comment of kids dying because they don't have medical attention (with the implication being it's because they don't have insurance)… no hospital can deny emergency room care b/c someone can't pay. IT'S A HUGE VICTORY AND YES I WILL AGREE THAT IT'S VERY HISTORICAL INDEED AND I UNDERSTAND WHY SOME BLACK AMERICANS ARE VERY HAPPY BECAUSE OF SO MANY PEOPLE MARCHING AND THOSE THAT HAVE DIED JUST SO OTHERS COULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS WHITE AMERICANS. GO AHEAD AND JUMP ALL OVER THIS BUT IT IS THE TRUTH. If you want to be taken seriously, don't talk this way. I say "talk" because I firmly believe that people type the way they talk and drive the way they conduct themselves in person.

I keep seeing this moronic, short-sighted and hypocritical statment made over and over:

[P] "Obama is our new president so get over yourselves!"

The entire point of our political system is to do EXACTLY the opposite. We are to question and scrutinise every action of our government and its officials.

Furthermore, I have read for well over a 8 years the constant vitriol from 'democrats' regarding Bush and republicans. The people that trully need to get over themselves are the ranting ignorant who, whether by choice or by design, feel they are justified as the downtrodden of an unjust society.

HOwever, I am sure it will all change when Obama doesn't make the poor rich and the rich knocked off their pedestal. I am sure it will change when people are still told that racism exists and is the sole reason for your lot in life. I am sure it will change when Afghanistan becomes our new Iraq.

… but then again… you can always blame the white, bigotted America for his shortcomings… which is exactly what will happen.

    Comment by Sven — November 21, 2008 @ 12:33 pm

  401. Maximus and Smurfed, since the main point you're arguing with me on is income taxes not being paid by 40% of Americans, its worth noting that 60% of these families make under 20,000 a year, everyone who works pays federal taxes, and most of those not liable for income taxes pay 4.3% of the countries payroll taxes and 11.1% of its excise taxes, making the ratio of taxes they pay to income they make much higher than the wealthiest americans. http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/do_40_percent_of_americans_pay_no.html

Joe youre right, I was referring to JD's post about the media not giving Bush a chance, the second part of my post was supposed to be about your post, somehow I messed up and thought they were written by the same person.

Sven, my grandfather and great uncle too fought in the war, to return here and be treated as second class citizens. The thing is its not about slavery. My post was about your earlier undermining of slavery in saying pretty much, if thats the worst racism this country has faced besides wiping out the Natives, then it's nothing big. Really when civil rights Affirmative Action etc. is brought up, its alot more about what went on after slavery and continued into a period most baby boomers remember. Segregation, Jim Crow, and the treatment of blacks in this country as second class citizens. There were studies done during civil rights on the mental effects of segregation asking young 6 year old black girls which doll they thought was prettier between the black and white barbie doll, their answer showing the low self image and self worth at the time. These little girls are now a part of the work force today. They would be some of the first to attend integrated schools, not always in the most welcoming environment. Its this generation, and the sons and daughters of those who were caught up in the War on Drugs who really can benefit from Affirmative Action, though many more of all ethnicities.

Unlike Hitler Obama isn't preaching hatred. It's one thing to be charismatic. Many great leaders are. He's not calling for Division, but for healing and unity for all Americans. Is it really class warfare to ask the wealthiest 5% holding more money than the other 95% to stop getting tax breaks they don't need, and to go back to paying what they were under Clinton, to boost the economy. My endorsement of his tax policy for the wealthiest of Americans who will spend the same each year regardless of a million dollar bonus check, doesn't mean I supported all of his programs. I think NAFTA was severely botched, but overall this country benefited from his Administration.

For all you white citizens that talk about the black race and feel that they are beneath you then you need to talk to some of your women who just love a black man. Maybe this is why a lot of you hate the black man so much. As you know, and see that the black man has done and will continue to do great things in this world. I hate to see you ignorant people that continue to talk about a handful of poor black men who fall below the system and do crazy things to hurt themselves but can't see that the hate within you is also hurting yourself. We have White, Black, Chinese, Spanish and every other race that do crazy things in America but White people only see what a black person do that is bad but can’t see the good that black people do. That is a really sad way to live, you live your life angry every day of your life because they do exists and they are not going anywhere. If it wasn’t for black people this world would not be the comfortable place you call home. (the buildings and electric objects that were made by a Black man) Even your white women know that, just you sick ignorant people that continue to think outside the box. Get over it and look around, most of America is black or mixed. Women all over the world are having little black babies by black men, Even some of your late Presidents were black, just didn't want it to be known back then. (knew the ignorant whites would hang them). So before you get angry at Obama for being a black president look at the one's before him that were also and you feel they did a good job. So some of you that are racist, look back in your history and you to my have a drop of black blood. So let’s just get along, we all are family.

  417. #416. Yes he is dear. where were you on election night? I tell you, the slave master have left an ongoing problem in this world. For ex. alot of the magazine covers stating that one particular race(models)are far more beatiful than others. i have dated other races because my family taught me not to be ignorant and to like or love a person for there personality and not the skin color.I guess for the next 4 or 8 years, some people will still be crying about him being president.I have never seen such an uproar over a president in my lifetime. So much negativity. How would some of you feel if your boss did'nt give you chance and was ready to kick you out the door even before you had a chance to really show what you are capable of doing? If the lord can give sinners and christians a chance and the earthly man should be able to give Obama a chance. Dr. King would have been proud of this moment in time. God bless the Obama family. Oh and this, people do know that he has to fix alot crap that Bush have ruined within the last 8 years so change will not come overnight. I did'nt vote for Bush because I felt he was on get back from when his dad was in office. I voted for Obama because I'm tired of seeing the same thing every few years. The economy was not like this even when Clinton was in office. I voted for Obama because I feel that he truly understands and cares for the common person's well being.I don't mind paying taxes if it will help those in need. I'm sorry but it just hurts me to see homeless people on the streets especially in the cold. I'm not rich but I try to gather blankets and fix hot meals and pass them to the homeless on the street.I think that we are in a world now where people just don't care about people anymore. Think about it, you could go to work the next day and lose your job…would'nt you want someone to reach out and help you?

  419. With this years 2008 election, we as american voters realize that we have creaded a unique moment in history. President elect Barack Obama will be the first African-American president in United States history. To commemorate this timeless moment, i believe that the United States Treasury Deptartment should begin the pre stages of design and circulation of a new $25 bill that would feature President elect Barack Obama to be the face of the bill. I have been researching on the process of a new paper money, there is alot that goes into this process, that is why i believe that the beginning stages should be introduced promptly, so that come January our historic president and the citizens of America, will have a token of history that would remind us of this great nation that we live in.

  420. I read have way through the comments to see that most of them were from Barack bashers, upset that ole' McCain didnt take it. People have to realize that Barack isnt asking these companies to make him a "celebrity", some are doing it because he represents history others to make a buck…regardless Barack deserved to win, the last 8 years have be hard on everyone" white, black, poor, rich, etc… you may not like that Obama won, but you know that he was the best choice!!!Get over yourself and your ignorant/foolish pride

  422. A very intelligent man came along, just when we needed him. It matters not, what color Barack Obama is,we're desperate for a smart and decent man, who's dedicated to making America a better place to live. You doubters may express skepticism, but I'm sure you'll agree,Obama risked
his and his family's lives to run for president. You surely can't believe he did that to give his wealthy chums huge tax cuts or access to power. ala halliburton, exxon, aig, citi group, Lehman brothers, blah, blah, blah. I will say this to all
my redneck peers and buddies, you'd better hope no
harm comes to this gentleman from Illinois.I'm a white redneck, but my tolerance for bigots and racists is as low as it's ever been, and I'm not alone. So you nitwit joe mcplumbers best be tippy-toeing when you feel the urge to spout some
of your racist crap. He's more for us than anything we've had since Jimmy Carter, and I'm hoping he'll be speaking from his bully pulpit for at least, the next 8 years. It is so sweet to be shed of those a__holes from texas

  423. This is a good thing! The first world wide recongnized image of a BLACK MAN worth printing since MLK. Don't hate. And don't take the word of the LORD out of context either. We should be proud that finally the entire world see's hope in OUR LEADER. Not worshiping, but loving what he stands for. If you are afraid of the world joining in to finally appreciating Our Leader and maybe thinking and saying good things about our choice for President, what does that say for you? Respect the MAN and recognize the image for what it is. THE PICTURE OF THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

  424. SO, after all the hype, when the economy doesnt turn around on a dime, another war is started and everyone in the low-income bracket are not living in big houses and driving fancy cars, what then?

Will you, the Obamatons, the true purveyors of racism, the exemplary models of intolerance, resign yourselves to "defeat" or will you simply point to those of us who do not adore Obama as the culmination of hope and change to declare that our hate has caused it all.

I trully hope he does well and turns things around, because I am sick and absolutely tired of hearing hate-rhetoric, excuses and easy target racist incriminations.

Maybe after this we can start living as human beings instead of ingnorant, self-pitied victims of an oppression that is self-inflicted.

    Seriously, grow the hell up.

Democracy is about dissenting opinions and critical commentary where our leaders are concerned.

It is what keeps them in check and us free.

For those of you who are informed or wish to be, look no further than Chavez in Venezuela to catch a glimpse of what can happen to an entire country when ignorance, class-warfare and delusions of being victimised by a larger "majority" carry a "great man".

  427. I did not vote for the Marxist and I do not support him. We wolud be best served to insure the US Constitution is not abused by this less that adequate individual. We could have done much better in electing someone who actually has the capability to accomplish what is needed for this economy. TAX CUTS and more TAX CUTS. No spreading the wealth to his common constituants. I can not wait for the next four years to pass and we get back on track. I hope the sob fails and falls flat on his ass.

Disgusting. I'll stick to riding my bike to work.

  432. This is silly. Not the card (although that too is silly) but the reaction. So much hate. Our system is such that the predictions of dictatorial rule are rendered baseless. Bush had a Republican Congress and he wasn't a despot, he did things people disagreed with, but he wasn't a despot. So the fear that now that the dems control congress, Obama will become overlord is just silly. No man could do that. It would require a string of individuals in the office conspiring with each other to consolidate power. In short, Chill.

Oh puh-leeze folks, get over it and stop the hating. #434 you're right on point. #31, if you don't want Obama on your StmartTrip card then you don't have to purchase that particular one, isn't that sample. #32, can you break that down a little? It is clear here that we all are not ready for a change, and due to some affiliation, probably will never be. PEACE.

  437. Time to pray is now. Watch and wait is all we can do. When the time comes we must stick together and help eachother out as we will have to pratically live underground hiding from him. We will not be able to work buy food or get health care without being tracked. We will have to help others. Warn your children as they may be instructed at school about his teachings.
Have faith in God, dont loose hope and dont let someone talk you into doing what you know in your heart is bad. Trust your instincts. If you feel something is not right, you can count that what your feeling maybe a warning. Take Heed
