MIDDAY ROUNDUP

@ 12:17 pm by Hill Staff

Rep. Henry Waxman’s (D-Calif.) power play to take control of the House Energy and Commerce Committee from Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) wins liberals’ acclaim today while President-elect Barack Obama’s choice of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) as Homeland Security Secretary has drawn conservative complaints.

With Waxman in charge, Democrats will have a strong ally on carbon emissions in control of the relevant committee, Kevin Drum writes at Mother Jones. The win could signal a more progressive Congress than was originally expected, Matt Stoller blogs at Open Left. Waxman’s win hardly constitutes a blow to the Democrats’ seniority system because he has sat behind Dingell as the second-ranking Democrat on the committee for years now, Kagro X claims at Daily Kos.

Napolitano might have made token gestures to secure the border in her state, but her heart lies with those supporting a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, Michelle Malkin argues, pointing to anti-illegal measures the governor blocked. If the Department was a mess under pro-amnesty Republican administration, it could become even worse under Napolitano, The Corner’s Kathryn Jean Lopez fears. The most interesting question is why she would take the job and forego a potentially successful 2010 or 2012 Senate race, Mark Krikorian follows up at The Corner.

Meanwhile, bloggers give CEOs of Detroit’s Big Three net negative verdicts after their performances on Capitol Hill yesterday. Flying down to D.C. in private jets was a public relations nightmare, and the CEOs behavior in front of Congress may doom a very necessary bailout, John Amato says at Crooks and Liars. GM CEO Rick Wagoner’s admission that the troubled automaker had not developed contingency plans was a bungled attempt to force Congress’s hand on a bailout, The Foundry’s Conn Carroll alleges.
