MIDDAY ROUNDUP

@ 12:24 pm by Hill Staff

PBS’s Gwen Ifill, who will moderate Thursday's Vice Presidential debate, is biased toward Barack Obama conservatives allege today. The Senate’s Wall Street bailout bill is even more distasteful to progressive bloggers than the House version, but that same group is optimistic noting Obama’s recent surge in swing state polls.

If a moderator had a pro-John McCain bias, the media would be treating that person differently than it has Ifill, writes Townhall’s Matt Lewis. Ifill’s book proclaiming the racial “breakthrough” of Obama’s candidacy suggests she has a conflict of interest, but journalists have a double standard for pointing this out when it deals with members of their own ranks The Corner’s Jonah Goldberg contends, while also noting NBC’s Andrea Mitchell is covering the bailout despite being married to former Fed chief Alan Greenspan. Ifill is an Obama “shill,” says Moe Lane at RedState, but she needn’t withdraw—just disclose her book to the audience.

The addition of tax cuts to the Senate’s bailout bill is unsurprising given the need to get Republicans on board, but now is the time to pass a bill, Kevin Drum declares. The Senate bill is three times closer to Wall Street than the House bill thanks to the Senate's being out-of-touch, blogs TPMCafe’s Jim Sleeper. The Senate bill’s tweaking of “mark to market” accounting standards may provide a temporary solution until a more concrete plan can be assembled, Matthew Yglesias thinks.

New swing state polls spell real trouble for McCain, writes Christopher Orr at The Plank. Though the numbers are disquieting for the Arizona senator’s supporters, it may energize them into panic mode, Jazz Shaw argues at The Moderate Voice. It’s not time for Democrats to bust out champagne with still a month left in the campaign, says Salon’s Alex Koppelman.
