Ifill Breaks Ankle But Still Plans to Moderate Veep Debate

@ 2:24 pm by Walter Alarkon

PBS's Gwen Ifill broke her ankle Monday, but she still plans to moderate Thursday's vice presidential debate, TVNewser reports.

Ifill, host of "Washington Week," was reportedly walking up a staircase while carrying debate-related material when she took a wrong step.

Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) will square off Thursday at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.
  1. The "wrong step" is allowing a woman writing a hero worshipful book about Obama to host a debate that is supposed to be fair and evenhanded. On the other hand, I doubt the media could find anyone for that task that wasn't already fully committed to Obama/Biden. These debates are worth the eye strain to watch.

  2. In response to #1: Interesting how this book got twisted in to a pro-Obama book, when "Breakthrough" is about black political culture. When writing a book about such a topic, how could you leave out the subject of Barack Obama and call yourself a good source? Please does us all a favor and refrain from spreading your ignorance as many gullible people out there may fall for it.

  3. The problem is that Gwen's area of interest–civil rights for blacks–unavoidably intersects with Obama's presence as a Presidential candidate. Was she supposed to ignore Obama's existence and publish a lie? Was she supposed to avoid publishing her book because some day McCain's aides might accuse her of being pro-Obama simply because Obama is a powerful black man who belongs in her book?

McCain's campaign has known about this book for awhile. What this really is, is a deliberate tactic by the McCain campaign to slander Gwen until they can stamp their feet like petulant children and demand her removal. That will postpone the debate–and thus their public embarrassment–and quite possibly cancel the debate altogether. Palin will never have to actually answer any serious questions.

It's McCain's last chance to win: hide Palin from public view. What idiot couldn't see what the McCain campaign is trying to accomplish here? It's GOP tactics: if you're losing a campaign, slander someone in order to put yourself back into power.
