Dems Forget to Invite GOP to Negotiations

@ 4:32 pm by Hill Staff

Hours after House Republicans announced that they would return to discuss a $700 billion Wall Street bailout, Democrats resumed negotiations without the lower chamber’s GOP members.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) emerged from a half-hour meeting to sheepishly admit to reporters there had been a communication mix-up with the time and location.

“Apparently there was some confusion,” Dodd said. “We thought that an invitation had been extended to both the House and Senate Republicans, but for whatever reason we’re going to have to reschedule… We’ll just reconvene, and we’ll continue working.”

Dodd and Frank quickly emphasized, however, that talks remain on course and that House Republicans have joined the effort, a day after boycotting them.

“We all still feel very optimistic that an agreement can be reached.” Dodd said. “This should not be read any other way than just a miscommunication regarding schedules and times.”

Frank also congratulated House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) for rejoining negotiations. Boehner has sent Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) to represent the House GOP in the talks.

“There does seem to be some progress with House Republicans,” Frank said. “They seem to be working with us.”

Aides to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) confirmed that the meeting’s breakdown was only a communication gaffe and not a larger conflict.

The meeting is likely to be rescheduled for the evening, possibly with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in attendance.
