Meghan McCain: My Dad Says 'Lipstick on a Pig'

@ 9:11 am by Andy Barr

John McCain's daughter Meghan is not taking offense to Barack Obama's "lipstick on a pig" line like the rest of her father's campaign, pointing out Wednesday morning that the GOP presidential nominee has been known to use the phrase.

"I've heard my dad say that, the term 'lipstick on a pig,'" McCain said during an appearance on Fox promoting her new children's book about her father.

Asked directly if she thought Obama was calling Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) a pig, McCain said, "I don't know. I hope not. I mean, I hope not, but I have no idea."

"I don't like anyone being referred to as a pig in any context," McCain added. "I think there's a lot more educated conversations we can have about the ticket than just saying these remarks like that."

During a campaign stop Tuesday, Obama attacked McCain and Palin for what he sees as a false portrayal of their records on reform.

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," Obama said.

The McCain campaign has hit back hard over the comment putting out a new ad and issuing strong responses.

Responding to McCain, the Obama campaign sent out a reminder to reporters that McCain used the phrase in 2007 to describe Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) health care plan.

  1. The media treats everything the republicans say as newsworthy. "mccain is upset about lipstick comment. mccain thinks obama is a celebrity. mccain thinks the media is sexist." what does mccain think about the economy, choice, iraq, …
obama needs to go back to hope and change and let the republicans lie, lie, lie!

  2. Ofcourse Meghan would know that Johnny Mac says that! From what I hear he says it to her every morning when she is putting on her lipstick for the day!

  4. Palin is the one who compared herself to a pitbull. It's the most accurate statement she's made so far.

    Comment by DoTheMath — September 10, 2008 @ 10:52 am

  5. John McCain, at a GOP fundraiser, once told a very crude, tasteless and not funny joke at the expense of Hillary and Chelsea Clinton and Janet Reno.

And now McCain pretends to be offended? Palin could be called a certain number of things but certainly not a pig. She is a stunningly beautiful woman. Obama knows that and so does everyone else.

    Comment by Don Warner — September 10, 2008 @ 10:55 am

  6. Of course faux news is playing up,or perhaps making up, this whole non-news story. I've tried commenting on their site but they never post comments that aren't spewing right wing hate drivel. It is a fact that Obama never said anything that even remotely links Sarah Palin to a pig but that doen't stop faux from criticizing him for the comment.
This yet another attempt to distract people from the fact that John "the Maverick" McCain has goosestepped in absolute synchrony with W on policies that have led to war, deficit spending, the end of Social Security, torture, domestic spying and joblessness. Frankly it is hard to put lipstick on that pig

  7. What does lipstick on a pig have to do with Universal Healthcare, Unemployment/Underemployment, Foreclosures, Ethics and Campaign Finance Reform, Global Warming and Alternative Fuel Solutions?

The Republicans don't have an answer to this, but they can debate until they're blue in the face about "lipstick on a pig"? This country is in trouble and American's are falling for this nonsense from the Republicans.

  8. i think that the media should play the whole part of the soeach so that it can be put into the right context. I hope that the republicans don't think that Obama has to wwlk on eggshells every time he makes a speach so that he Media can have a field day. Please.. if palinn wants this high offfice job she will have to put up with a lot or get out. Why dont she talk to the Media? is she afraid that she will not say the right thing. ?? Is she having a crash course . she must think she is very smart to do this in a few days. Let's hear you speak without script Palin. Let's see if you are up to these very difficult world times. So far palin has said nothing. It is time she starts letting us know what she knows and what her idea's are. Forget the lipstick , get down to what's good for us.

  9. Lipstick on a pig is sexist per McCain campaign.

McCains joke, "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno her father". Classy joke by McCain and in good taste.

    Comment by william druckman — September 10, 2008 @ 11:18 am

  10. If she heard the blurb, then she heard it's context and clearly sees it for what the "pig" is — the Republican platform. If she didn't hear it, she should have said "I didn't hear it so I can't comment."

This statement shows that the whole family has thrown "decent politics" under the bus and driven back and forth over it. McCain talked about running a campaign on issues — but I've yet to hear how his economic policy will be different than Bushes, how his foreign policy will be different than Bushes, how his domestic policies will be any different than Bushes.

As for politicking, he's 100% with Bush. He's got the the Bush team working for him using Karl Rove style campaigning. He even hired the slime bucket that smeared his family in 2000.

Yeah, McCain has changed. He's changed from the Maverick he was to the slimy, neo-conservative Republican. Palin's ultra-conservative viewpoints point not to a Maverick, but to someone who only cares about winning — regardless of the effects on the country.

I would have seriously considered voting for McCain in 2000 and it is sad to see him become another Religious-right lackey.

    Comment by Mark — September 10, 2008 @ 11:20 am

  11. No way should Sen Obama apologize.

    What he said is true.

"You can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it's still going to stink after eight years."

Gov Palin can certainly take credit for the word 'lipstick' being a popular phrase now.

Implied insinuation is Gov Palin's forte.

    PS: Ms Piggy wore lipstick.

  12. I am so happy that McCain's own daughter did not try to make this an issue! She realizes that there are "more educated conversations we can have about the ticket than just saying these remarks like that." She revealed the hypocrisy of her father.

    Comment by Linda NC — September 10, 2008 @ 11:29 am

  13. For months on end, Hillary Clinton assumed it was the Obama camp that was spreading sexist smears and the Obama side thought it was the Clintons behind the racist lies. It's becoming clearer every day that the blame lies with John McCain's slimeballs. Their tactics are right out of the Karl Rove "A hard offense is the best defense." If Joe Biden and Barack Obama lose because they weren't willing to play fast, free and nasty, then America will deserve what it gets. I'm still hoping that the majority of Americans and electoral votes will be cast for people who honestly believe in the best we each have to offer. I'm am so tired of the politics of fear and hatred that I could vomit.

  14. Prior to the cliche "lipstick on a pig" Obama mentioned McCain (only McCain) and several policies. He was clearly talking about the policies, and for the media to not play the entire tape and show the context is pathetic!

  16. Obama was referring to McSame's policies when he made the comment But if McSame and Palin see themselves as a pig with lipstick. If she's not a pig with lipstick then let it go. A VP nor a president should be so vain that they presume that every spoken word is about them. Maybe Per Diem Palin sees something in the comment that matches who she really is.

  19. Sarah Palin Allows Child Abuse To Go Unreported
The whole “Troopergate” scandal involves Governor Sarah Palin trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from his job as a Alaska State Trooper. One of the allegations was that the trooper tasered his 11-year-old stepson — Sarah Palin’s nephew. Well, that 11-year-old is now 17, which means this occurred in 2002 when the trooper and Sarah Palin’s sister were still together. When Sarah Palin began her vendetta of getting this man fired — after relations between him and her sister turned sour — and brought the taser incident to light, it was 3 years later in 2005.

So Sarah Palin allows this child abuse to take place for 3 years before raising a stink about it, now that she’s on ill terms with the trooper?

The law states that all officials are mandated reporters of child abuse and/or neglect in a timely fashion. A Failure to report is a cirme punishable by a fine and/or jail time.

  20. Obama has only himself to blame for making the Republican VP selection the central focus of his campaign. It may be useful to note he is not running against her. And if he were, he is losing badly.

Obama is way off message and is totally reactive. He has lost his footing and it will become very, very painful as he begins to look progressively more foolish and trivial. Fundraising will be impacted shortly as nobody wants to fund a fool.

Hey, why doesn't he go on David Letterman?

In the face of a brilliant strategic move, Obama and his advisers have shown their total lack of perspective and judgment and have squandered their opportunity. They came to a gunfight with a knife.

Obama is a poseur and fakir who has risen beyond his level of competence. Affirmative action can only take one so far and then it depends on the person. Obama is not that person.

Learn it, live it, say it — President John S McCain and Vice President Sarracuda. Game, set, match McCain!

  21. I laughed when I heard it. I laughed when I saw the crocodile tears everywhere. And I'll laugh about it again tomorrow. Like the comic says: "I don't care where you're from…that's funny!"

(Oh, and where is all the outrage from the senior set about "old fish"?? Anyone??)

    Comment by Matty — September 10, 2008 @ 12:06 pm

  22. So John McCain has put a "spin" on Obama's comment and become "outraged." Let's see, why wasn't he "outraged" when someone in his campaign said to Cindy McCain "At least I don't plaster makeup on my face like a trollop, you cunt!" Oh yes, that was him. My bad.

    Comment by Karma — September 10, 2008 @ 12:06 pm

  23. The people who really deserve an apology are all those good Americans that after a hard day's work go out and devote precious time to help their communities. In a cynical attempt to put down Obama, Sarah Palin mocked and insulted all those "Points of Light", as the elder Bush called them. No person who truly believes in America would mock Palin for her PTA work, how dare she mock and belittle the rest of us who volunteer in our communities? Sarah, we are waiting for your apology.

  24. This whole made-up baloney by the McCain camp is disgusting. Leave all this personal garbage out of the politics. McCain did it earlier with the useless celebrity attacks. Now, he is doing it with his made-up umbrage. If you are so great, talk policy.

  26. This is really good for Obama. It is clear from the context, that he was referring to republican policies as stated by John McCain, and was not referring to Sarah Palin.

But, on Letterman, and everywhere else someone wants to bring it up, every time he explains what he was actually saying—it drives home the point—that you can put lipstick on a pig, or a pit bull or a department store mannequin—an it remains what it is.

  42. Uh, you libs aren't listening, as usual. The ticket HAS talked about choice (it's murder, except to save the life of the mother), universal healthcare (do you really want to wait 6 months for a 5-minute checkup like in Canada?), Iraq (the surge has been proven to work, and we will get out when the time comes), etc.

People - the economy has little to do with who is in any office. It's called a business cycle, and we're in a bad one. What does affect it is taxation, especially on the wealthier job creators. If you want a president or Congressman to affect the economy, you only vote for Republicans. No Hypocrat is going to cut anyone's taxes! And the greed of (mostly) Hypocrats is how we got our banking crisis. Throw them out, problem solved! You idiots want change, but the real power has been held by libs for the last several years. Now, you're going to put even more of them in Washington! Brilliant! All because you believe the media telling you that it's all GWB's fault.

Global warming doesn't exist - get over it. If it did, it wouldn't be because of us, and there's nothing we can do about it. We are only using domestic spying on people who need to be watched. Wouldn't it have been nice to have had closer tabs on the 19 infidels, now burning in hell, before 9/11/01? Socialist Security NEEDS to end. I can do a lot better with my money than any government. Torture? Make the "detainees" wear lipstick. They'll start talking, and it'll look funnier. Then show it on al-Jazeera.

    1. He's not bright enough to realize with Palin's recent quote everyone would associate the 2 comments.
Well, since he is a Democrat, therefore automatically one of the smartest people in the USA, it cannot be that so it must be the other. . .

  44. The McCain camp is proving to be the biggest bunch of hypocritical phonies I've ever seen.

Let's see this nonsense for what it is….another move by John McCain to make this election about divisive non-issues and personal attacks rather than solutions that will rebuild our economy and improve our national security.

I expected more out of John McCain, and took him at his word months ago when he said he would run an honest, respectful and honorable campaign.

But now I'm beginning to think he left his honor in Hanoi. After 26 years as part of the Republican establishment in Washington, it's clear this is not the same man.

He can try to put perfume on a skunk, but it won't cover up the stench.

  45. This is the story for the National Enquirer from today. The NATIONAL ENQUIRER'S exclusive ongoing investigation of GOP VP Nom Sarah 'Barracuda' Palin's goes far beyond a mere teen pregnancy crisis this week! The Enquirer's team of reporters has combed the Alaskan wilderness to discover the hidden truth about Gov. Palin's family, which has become a central part of political identity. The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively that Sarah's oldest son, Track, was addicted to the power drug OxyContin for nearly the past two years, snorting it, eating it, smoking it and even injecting it. And as Track, 19, heads to Iraq as part of the U.S. armed forces, Sarah and her husband Todd were powerless to stop his wild antics, detailed in the new issue of The ENQUIRER, which goes on sale today. THE ENQUIRER also has exclusive details about Track's use of other drugs, including cocaine, and his involvement in a notorious local vandalism incident. "I've partied with him (Track) for years," a source disclosed. "I've seen him snort cocaine, snort and smoke OxyContin, drink booze and smoke weed." The source also divulged the girls would do anything for Track and he'd use his local celebrity to manipulate other guys "to get them to steal things he wanted." "He finally did what a lot of troubled kids here do," the source divulged. "You join the military." And as Gov. Palin has billed the state of Alaska for various expenses related to her children, as reported by The Washington Post, The ENQUIRER's investigation reveals that she was so incensed by 17-year-old Bristol's pregnancy that she banished her daughter from the house. Another family friend revealed pre-prego Bristol was as much of a hard partier as Track was. "Bristol was a huge stoner and drinker. I've seen her smoke pot and get drunk and make out with so many guys. All the guys would brag that the just made out with Bristol." When Sarah found out the teen was pregnant by high schooler Levi Johnston, she was actually banished from the house. As part of the cover-up, Palin quickly transferred Bristol to another high school and made her move in with Sarah's sister Heather 25 miles away! And the ENQUIRER also learned that Levi Johnston, the baby mamma's future wedded dada, who was glad handed by John McCain at the GOP Convention, isn't too happy about his impending shotgun nups either. "Levi got dragged out of the house to go to Minnesota,' Levi's friend told The ENQUIRER. "Levi realizes he's stuck being with Bristol because her mom is running for Vice President." The friend also confided that both Bristol and Levi "broke up a few times and they definitely messed around with other people." Meanwhile, as members of the Palin family's war viciously over "Trooper-Gate" and claims of Sarah's extramarital affair have turned the political race into a chaotic arena of threats, denials and vicious attacks by political black ops, The ENQUIRER has discovered shocking new details about the red-hot affair scandal! For the full story of the secrets Sarah Palin is trying to hide? pick up the new ENQUIRER!

The budget cutting happened, newsweek can say "well, you're looking at it wrong" all they want. I've seen the marks made and signed by Palin, SHE DID make the education cuts, and its available online, see for yourself before believing Newsrag.

Bridge to nowhere: LIES. Curiously not in this article.. Which simply means the issue is so black and white it's impossible to refute or spin: PALIN LIED.

The 10 hour flight after her water broke.. Yes, more lies. Her assertion that her "doctor said it was alright", refuted by the doctor, whom Palin it seems, recommended for family practice doc of the year in Alaska. (yes, he got it, but he's been scrubbed from the hospital records curiously). There are a hundred lies surrounding her claims around this, and the story WILL break eventually.

YES, she IS in big oils pocket. She wants ANWR drilling, and is quite specific about the details.. I'm sure she worked those details out on her own though, huh? A journalist, who took 5 years and 4 different schools to get her degree, just happens to have an intricate plan for ANWR drilling up her sleeve.. (no endangered polar bears here..)

[And fuck you ANWR drilling people. THERE ARE NO AMERICAN OIL COMPANIES, they are all international, and we don't pay any less for oil drilled here than oil drilled elsewhere. It's just more profit for the oil companies.]

Not a seccessionist? What the hell is she doing at their conventions and photo ops then? She's released talking points on it before, are those suddenly invalid? Member or not, she's 'been there, done that'. Don't say you don't smoke pot and show up at the 'hemp fest' without people cryin BS.

Nothing about her church either.. well, apparently picking on fundys is out of vogue. Must be some sort of truce here. But even as an Obama supporter, I wanna know what lunatic crap his pastor said, Same for Palin's loony minister, we should be informed about this crap, not sweeping it under the rug. Obama at least disowned himself from the remarks, while Palin is in agreement and 'educating' the troops. (Jesus says to fight in IRAQ?!, Is she fucking nuts?)

That newsweek article is shameful. Refuting something is not the same as denying or putting spin on it, but reporters on murdochs leash are kept painfully ignorant of such facts.

How many people out there buy into her BS?
Can you imagine the conversation between her and her Daughters 'fiancee'?!
She 'welcomes the newest family member with open arms?" Haha! I'm sure she was like "Nah, it's fine you knocked up my daughter, oh and no problem you don't have a job, oh and your Myspace page says "I DONT WANT BABYS" no problem, and sure, the state and Palins personal opinion is purely abstinence only, but those are just guidelines, right? Maybe you missed that class? Oh, and thanks for doing 'the right thing', I mean you could have just walked away, like you did in 8th grade, when you knocked up that other girl.. Oh, and lucky I'm governor, or we'd have those pesky Statutory rape laws to deal with, and lets hope the baby is healthy, because it's gonna be impossible otherwise to secure any insurance for it, considering you have no job and are having the child out of wedlock, which is like 'no problem', but just this once, because usually I'm like cutting the budget for people in your boat…

lol. Most UNQUALIFIED VP CHOICE EVER! And the more you support her the bigger a moron you are.

  47. Check this out from Politico:

"Democratic Congressman Russ Carnahan on Tuesday — introducing Joe Biden at a campaign event — ripped into Palin’s record and punctuated it with this snarky jab. “There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick,” he said. Later in the day, Obama used a variation of the lipstick line, though he was clearly talking about the McCain-Palin reform rhetoric. "You can put lipstick on a pig," he said. "It's still a pig."

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13315.html

Now what are the odds both the Obama Team and the Biden Team would make "lipstick" comments on the same day accidentally?

    Wow.

  48. Hell, even this article misrepresents what was actually said!

Let's compare how Andy Barr the author here portrayed the circumanstances and context of Obama's quotes and then let's look at the actual verbatim quote from Obama and see if we can spot the very clear differences.

This is how the context and Obamas comments were explained in this article:

"During a campaign stop Tuesday, Obama attacked McCain and Palin for what he sees as a false portrayal of their records on reform.

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," Obama said."

    Here's the actual Obama Quote:

“John McCain says he’s about change, too — except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics. That’s just calling the same thing something different.

You can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change; it’s still going to stink after eight years.”

Notice the not so sublet distinctions between the two? In fact, CONTRARY TO THIS ARTICLES CLAIMS, Obama was not in any way commenting upon Palin. His complaint was SOLELY about McCain's endorsing and committing to continuing the policies of the Bush Administration.

Nice try and spin there, but what Obama said and how it's even being reported on this site, differ significantly. Another example of the media following a campaign's lead in creating a phony outrage because they know its the quick and dirty way to lead the news cycle. Actually writing insightful, thought-provoking and well-researched articles about matter of substance and import is actually hard work and takes some talent. Any hack with a forum can create this sort of garbage faux scandal of the day. (On either side of the political aisle.)

  49. Troy M - you rock. You need to forward your comments to the DNC so they can use them for their research on McCain't and Gov. Trailertrash. Hey, you right-wing hypocrites out there, try reading other sources of information instead of getting all of your propoganda from Fox and Druggy Limp-paw.

  50. Obama was most definitely referring to Palin / McCain with the "lipstick on a pig" / "fish" remark. Remember - this is Obama "taking the high road!". He has done himself much more harm that good from his intended smears. He is pure evil and the truth will be revealed about him in the near future. McCain / Palin 2008

  51. She may not be a pig, but she is a vindictive racist with that "Sambo beat the b***h" comment.

  52. "[Obama] is pure evil"

These are the words of a false prophet. No man can be pure evil. This presidential election is not a referendum on who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. Such hyperbolic hyperventilation allows everyone else to ignore everything else you say.

  53. It's interesting how the dems continually slam Carl Rove, until his statements reinforce their vitriol for the republicans. Actually, Rove said that BOTH dems and republicans ads went too far, but the dems just want to make it look like Rove said the Republicans went too far. I don't care what the media says, if you connect the dots, it's obvious that Obama's lipstick/pig comment, which came just days after Palin scored points with her pitbulll/lipstick statement, was an ugly sexist response from Obama. Now, Obama is crying that he was misinterpreted, while the media, once again assists him in playing the victim. The deck has been so stacked in favor of Obama, whether it's the media's refusal to vet Obama in the first place, to giving Obama free rides with Wright, Farrakhan, Rezko, Ayers, etc.. The media, as well as shows like The View, are continuing to show extreme bias against Senator John McCain, while kissing Obama's ass.
