SATURDAY ROUNDUP

@ 6:57 pm by Chris Good

New polling confirms that John McCain is gaining ground on Barack Obama after his party’s convention, bloggers decide, while others debate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R) record on earmarks.

Two new surveys indicate that McCain could emerge tied with Obama in most major polls next week, Power Line’s John Hinderaker argues. Rasumessen and Gallup show Obama leading by one and two percentage points respectively, down from eight earlier this month, Hinderaker notes. But Democrats shouldn’t worry, Nate Silver cautions at Five Thirty Eight: conventions are supposed to provide bounces, and an average, six-point bump for McCain will still see Obama leading by a couple points next week, Silver writes.

One Daily Kos blogger alleges that Palin is an enthusiastic earmarker despite her running mate’s opposition to them, Georgia10 claims that Alaskan municipal records contain a note hand-written by Palin saying “we did well!” on an earmark, citing that as evidence of Palin’s proclivity. But Palin doesn’t deserve criticism from the left on earmarks, Ed Morrissey argues at Hot Air: that’s John McCain’s role on the ticket, not hers, Morrissey contends, arguing that she hasn’t claimed to be an anti-earmarks champion.

Rep. Don Young’s (R-Alaska) reelection bid, meanwhile, is essentially a coin toss, Matt Moon decides at The Next Right. Votes are still being counted in his tight primary race against Lt. Gov Sean Parnell (R), with the latest count showing a 239-vote lead for Young, and Moon thinks Parnell could catch up.
