SEIU Counts References to Healthcare, Economy at GOP Convention

@ 5:21 pm by Chris Good

Republicans made healthcare and economic policy recommendations a total of 19 times in major speeches at their St. Paul convention this week, according to a count by Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

This from an SEIU release earlier today:

TOTAL WORDS SPOKEN:  18,562*
Total references to fixing the broken health care system:  3
Total references to concerns about the struggling economy:  4
Total references to creating new jobs:  10
Total references to the mortgage crisis:  2

SEIU analyzed speeches by GOP speakers John McCain, Cindy McCain, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, President George Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, Sen., former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Arkanas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Sen. Fred Thompson (Tenn.), former Pennsylvania Gov. and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, as well as Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

The analysis only counted references that included policy proposals, and it did not count attacks on Obama's policies. So, for instance, John McCain's menion of "Bill and Sue Nebe from Farmington Hills, Michigan, who lost their real estate investments in the bad housing market" did not count.

Critical issues "barely registered as a blip on the screen" at the GOP's convention, SEIU said upon releasing today's statistics. The union has lauded Barack Obama and Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), by contrast, for offering a "clear vision" on those issues during the Democratic convention last week.
