McCain Touts Todd Palin's Union Membership

@ 2:36 pm by Walter Alarkon

John McCain has been the target of attacks by unions, but he's not holding Todd Palin's union membership against him.

In fact, McCain touted the fact that Palin, husband of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, belongs to the United Steelworkers during a campaign event Friday.

McCain made the remark after jokingly calling Todd Palin "crazy" for being a world champion snowmobiler.

what a guy, a commercial fisherman, a union member, and a devoted father," McCain said.

Palin works as a production operator for BP, the oil company.

The United Steelworkers and other unions, including the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union, have criticized McCain in ads and in statements for his opposition to a bill that makes it easier to organize.  Those unions have endorsed Barack Obama for president, noting that he supports the measure, called the Employee Free Choice Act.

Below the full quote from McCain during the campaign event about Todd Palin, Sarah Palin and her family.

Have you had that chance to meet her wonderful family? Aren't they incredible? Aren't they incredible? And could I mention her husband, Todd? That guy is crazy. Every year for 2,000 miles, in 40-degree below weather — they call them snow machines in Alaska, we know them as snowmobiles — he goes across Alaska, and he's a four-time world champion. Remarkable. Remarkable. Remarkable.

(APPLAUSE)

And I'm telling you, he's crazy. You'd have to be crazy to do that. But what a guy, a commercial fisherman, a union member, and a devoted father.

  1. Yeah, I think I heard somewhere (barely) that he has a kid out of wedlock. The press tried ,very hard to suppress it.

  2. McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds was on MSNBC the other day saying Todd Palin was a stay-at-home dad. I've also heard that Mr. Palin works in the oil and gas industry on the North Slope in Alaska, as well as at his family's commercial fishery. So which is the correct story and will the GOP stick with it?

  5. McCain/Palin insult and mock community organizers, groups like:
    Habitat for Humanity
    The Red Cross
    Hospice
    March of Dimes
Salvation Army (Like the bell ringers for instance)
    Easter Seals
    Volunteer Fire and rescue personel
    Goodwill
    Helping Hands
    Coastal Cleanup
    Meals on Wheels
And, Oh, yeh….All those Faith based initiatives.
Do you want a president that has so little respect for service work?
P.S. Did he tout his membership in the ANTI-AMERICAN Alaska Independence party???
