MIDDAY ROUNDUP

@ 1:12 pm by Chris Good

A possible deal to put Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) up for a nomination vote at her party’s convention has bloggers buzzing about the motivations for such an agreement, while John McCain dominates bloggers’ discussion of the Russia Georgia conflict, as they debate the potential Cold-War mentality of his argument that “we are all Georgians.”

Aides for Clinton and Barack Obama will soon announce a deal to have delegates vote on the once-favored Democratic contender in Denver, and the goal is to pacify her embittered supporters, Greg Sargent asserts at TPM Election Central. Contrary to Clinton’s critics, the New York Democrat does not want to spoil Obama’s coronation, and Clinton made the deal to keep her most ardent supporters from doing so at the convention, Sargent claims. Clinton had not initially asked for a vote when talks about the convention began this summer, but recent pressure from her supporters forced the two camps to decide that a vote will be best for bringing Clinton’s backers into Obama’s fold, writes Marc Ambinder, who initially reported the imminent pact.

McCain has kept the Georgian conflict as a primary campaign issue with an op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal entitled, “We Are All Georgians,” Mark Halperin determines at The Page. In it, McCain does well to dispel the myth that history ended in 1990, reminding readers that even after the Cold War, the world is still a dangerous place and some leaders can’t be trusted, Ed Morrissey contends at Hot Air. But McCain and other conservatives are merely jumping at the chance to enter another Cold War with Russia, ignoring America’s present struggle against radical Islam, Josh Marshall argues at TalkingPointsMemo.

And news that the Obama camp will deny Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) a speaking role at the Democratic convention has Open Left’s Matt Stoller doubting the move. Rangel has dealt with controversies this year over his multiple rent-controlled apartments and an earmark for a college center named after him, but Stoller says it would be a big mistake to keep his profile low at the convention.
