AFL-CIO Mailer: Obama Wears Flag Pin, Is Christian, Swears on Bible

@ 11:35 am by Chris Good

The AFL-CIO announced today it will send a mailer to 600,000 union members in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin aimed at dispelling rumors about Barack Obama.

The mailer offers "straight answers to real questions" such as: does he wear a flag pin, is he Christian, was he born in America, does he swear on a Bible, and does he place his hand over his heart when he says the pledge of allegiance.

The answer provided to all of the above is "yes," though the mailer notes that Obama sometimes wears other pins (e.g. breast cancer awareness) or no pin at all.

"A lot of unfair, false rumors are being spread," the mailer tells workers. "Here are the answers to some of the honest questions you may have about Barack Obama."

Obama, who had difficulties attracting white, blue-collar workers in the Democratic primary, faces significant confusion about his religious identity, as 12 percent of Americans think he is Muslim, according to a Pew Research Center Poll published earlier this month.

The mailer includes photos of Obama wearing a flag pin, attending church, swearing into the Senate on a Bible held by Vice President Dick Cheney, holding his hand over his heart, and shaking hands with workers.

Obama leads John McCain, according to RealClearPolitics poll averages, in all four of the battleground states where union members will receive the mailer.
