DAY'S END ROUNDUP

@ 5:39 pm by Andy Barr

John McCain saying “I don’t know” when asked if Barack Obama is a socialist has liberal bloggers asking when McCain is going to make up his mind whether to attack Obama as an extremist or as a typical politician. Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman (D) saying McCain should compel former White House adviser Karl Rove to testify and a McCain surrogate saying "the Muslims" are "going to kill us" also have bloggers talking headed into the weekend.

McCain is simultaneously attacking Obama with contradicting terms, putting out an ad Thursday saying Obama will do "whatever the politics demand" and suggesting Friday that he is a socialist, writes Open Left's Chris Bowers. Political Ticker points out that McCain was basing his statement on Obama's National Journal rating, which lists him as more liberal than Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) who lists himself as an "independent Democratic socialist."

At the netroots convention in Austin, Siegelman told Huffington Post blogger Sam Stein than in order to distance himself from the Bush White House, McCain should call on Rove to testify on the politicalization of the Justice Department. MyDD's Jonathan Singer agrees with Siegelman saying that if McCain wants to prove he would have a transparent White House, this is a good way to start.

And McCain surrogate Bud Day said on a  midday conference call that "the Muslims have said either we kneel or they're going to kill us," prompting outrage on the left, writes Rachel Weiner. TPM points out that despite the outrage, the McCain campaign is refusing to distance itself from Day.
