Jesse Helms Dies at 86

Former Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), a champion of conservative causes, died early Friday at the age of 86, according to the Jesse Helms Center.

He was an advocate of hard-line stances toward communist countries and a staunch opponent of U.S. funding for the United Nations. He served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Ed Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation, praised Helms's role in furthering the conservative movement.

"Jesse Helms was one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century," Feulner said in post on the foundation's blog. "Along with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, he helped establish the conservative movement and became a powerful voice for free markets and free people. The defeat of Soviet communism and the rise of Ronald Reagan would not have happened without his intrepid leadership at decisive times."

  2. You really can't help but feel sorry for Jesse Helms. God allowed him to have unparallelled power (though he was not qualified–did not even have a degree) to ease human suffering and an unusual amount of time to do it (86 years). Instead of minding God's flock as his charge he used his position to create unparallelled suffering in the God's downtrodden. How will he explain himself? THIS is why I beleive God has a sense of humor and he called Jesse to account on our Independence Day—freeing us of the type of "leadership" that rallys the KKK to subjugate—no, TERRRORIZE, God's people. Helms hated everything out nation stood for–and was open to the fear tactics through the KKK (bombing, fear-mongering) that Osama Bin Laden now uses. True patriot? No, more like true TERRORIST. The fact that our own president cannot see that reveals the blindness of the "conservative" movement. Anyway, my family has even more to celebrate this independence day, now that we are free of this vile hate monger who is not receiving his judgement. He wanted to make the gentile Mosely-Braun cry…..now if that is not a southern gentleman I don't know what is! Well, pretty ironic that his death brought no tears from the nation he terrorized!

    WATCH OUT AMERICANS–John (sen from Arizona) and Jesse are cut from the same cloth–uh,er, I mean SHEET and if you want to go back to Jim Crowe and the terror it brought our nation you will support Helm's twin.
