MIDDAY ROUNDUP

@ 1:05 pm by Chris Good

Barack Obama’s suggestion that he would expand funding for President Bush’s faith-based programs has liberal and conservative bloggers debating. An ABC News story on Obama’s evolving view of welfare reform has conservatives throwing around the flip-flopper moniker. And a new poll has liberals doubting Sen. Joe Lieberman’s (I-Conn.) reelection chances.

The thought of Obama joining President Bush on allowing tax dollars to support faith-based programs gives AMERICABLOG’s John Aravosis the “willies.” Religious groups that help inner city youth with midnight basketball programs are intriguing, but Bush’s program is “creepy” as it nestles government too close to religion, Aravosis argues. But even secular liberals, despite their own leanings, can see this as a solid campaign move, The Corner’s Byron York notes, pointing readers to an Andrew Sullivan post at The Daily Dish. If one fifth of America’s evangelicals vote for Obama, the nation could see a serious political realignment, Sullivan contends.

Obama’s media honeymoon is over now that ABC News reported that the Democratic candidate is now saying he supports welfare reform despite opposing the 1996 federal overhaul, RedState’s Moe Lane declares. Obama wants to pretend he supported President Bill Clinton’s effort when he really didn’t, instead of admitting that he took the wrong position early in his career, Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey alleges.

Lieberman is in trouble now that new Quinnipac poll shows his approval rating at 45 percent in Connecticut–the lowest point ever, TPM Election Central’s Eric Kleefeld proclaims. The numbers reveal that the Independent senator’s embrace of John McCain in the presidential race is costing him, Kleefeld argues. And Lieberman wouldn’t stand a chance in a rematch against 2006 Democratic candidate Ned Lamont, MyDD’s Josh Orton suggests.

The Hill welcomes comment from anyone and will almost always post it whether it is favorable or critical, as long as it is substantive and advances debate.
  1. ABC news is not a network that watch anymore. They can not be trusted for all the biased news that they give out.
