Obama on GOP: 'If They Bring a Knife to the Fight, We Bring a Gun'

@ 2:47 pm by Andy Barr

Barack Obama is warning supporters that the general election fight between him and John McCain may get ugly, but the Illinois senator is vowing not to back down.

"If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun," Obama said at a fundraiser in Philadelphia Friday, according to pool reports.

"We don't have a choice but to win," Obama said, joking that he has heard "folks in Philly like a good brawl. I've seen Eagles games."

Obama again said that the GOP will make try to make him look "scary" to voters.

Obama pledging to swing back at the GOP drew much applause from the crowd.

Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant said Obama's rhetoric abandons Obama's campaign themes of hope and change.

"In the last 24 hours, he’s completely abandoned his campaign’s call for ‘new politics’, equating the election to a ‘brawl’ and promising to ‘bring a gun,’" Conant said.

No, Senator Obama is NOT abandoning his desire for a respectful campaign on the issues.

He's just saying that he will defend __ He has no desire to come with a "gun" but__

Let the word go forth to the republican foe THAT contrary to what is being said about him based upon his primary interaction with Senator Clinton that he will DEFEND if John McCain campaign ATTACKS. He will meet republican "knife" afftacks with his Obama campaign "shock and awe" attacks.

Senator Obama is just metaphorically speaking__placing a caveat out there for John McCain Campaign.

Let John McCain campaign "nice" then on the issues!

Obama and the democrats do not want the focus to be fair or on issue. They will twist and spin every little thing that is said…. Why, because the man Obama represents is not what the man Obama has lived. He has no record, no experience in leadership, but he seems like a nice guy…. and he sure has the promises (all lies) down pat…..

    Comment by Bob from Illinois — June 14, 2008 @ 5:23 pm

  25. Remember people - Obama is consolidating power in Chicago, the hub of politics being a contact sport.

I moved out of Chicago to get away from the entrenched and pay or play views so I don't want to put Chicago in the White House - Rahm, Axelrod, Barry Obama, et al.

Yet, I don't want McCain either.

In a country of 300 million people, and many millionaires who are business leaders, wasn't there 2 people other then these bottom of the bag crumbs that we have to vote for?

The founding of this country was with Virginia as a colony for Queen Elizabeth 1 for the basis of commerce, thus the whole reason for the USA to exist is business, pure and simple.

Instead of business leaders running the country we have lawyers who have mucked up everything.

Remember that lawyers debated for a full year over the meaning of one word and how it was pronounced/placed in the sentence with President Clinton. LAWYERS!

Stop with the repugnacan crap and the other side calling the left commies and let's say it for what it is: Lawyers and their clients (on both sides).

We're the jury and have to vote on these 2.

I feel infinitely saddened at the lack of quality in both these candidates.

Now, go back to cheering on your decrepit candidate who sings "Bomb Bomb Iran". And keep attacking Obama's wife. The party of "family values" keeps showing how they really don't care for families if they aren't republicans.

    Comment by BombBombIran — June 14, 2008 @ 5:26 pm

  29. I see just a tricky comment by Senator Obama implying somebody could generally be free to carry guns and knives.

According to his views on the 2nd ammendment he would ban most gun rights leaving most of us exposed and defenseless to any kind of violence confronting us including a tyrannical government which I believe Senator Obama represents. He and his elite would enjoy full security measures while we go down without a fighting chance.

No thanks, people, I've been around long enough to appreciate traditional America, to look communism eyeball to eyeball and to know what it is.

No, I didn't know that — and nobody with half a brain wanting to be president of the United States is going to speak code lines from a movie to people instead of speaking forthrightly and honestly about what is in his heart and mind.

I mean, Aaron, exactly how stupid do you have to be to pull off a stunt like this?

He's going to self-immolate fairly soon, I'm sure. And that's not a line from a movie.

    Comment by tanarg — June 14, 2008 @ 5:27 pm

  32. Watch OUT. Obama is not about bringing people together, his history is politics is the complete opposite. He doesn't cross the aisle to the other side to try and unite. They'd rather have the right to use automatic weapons and handguns on deer. Truth is, republicans are so demoralized after 8 years of the worst president in American history that they have nothing left but to attack Obama and his wife on their race and his middle name. It's funny, actually.

  44. Stooping to threats already? Wow. Yae Yae Obama! Raise my taxes Yae! I love to pay more taxes and to have my paltry shaved earnings redistributed to gov’t programs because after all, they know what’s best! Gov’t should run healthcare too because shoot, we all deserve the best care America has to offer. Never mind the fact that quality of service will drop through the floor, and prospective future doctors and drug researchers will go into other fields instead. McCain’s portable healthcare plan that puts individuals in control is just way too radical and we don’t need that because Gov’t knows what’s best! Plus I want to tax corporations more dangit. They just may way too much money and create way too many jobs and pay their employees way too much. And then those employees go and buy way too much stuff at stores. Uncle Sam should get a bigger slice of the pie because they are way more productive.

I've noticed he does not do well without notes and preplanned questions. We have had Town Hall meetings for the presidential candidates for a long time. Not being willing to debate in that setting makes me wonder what else is Sen. Obama not able to handle. On the world stage and in a crisis, being unable to think well and quickly and with the right answer and courage is imperative. This isn't a good start for Sen. Obama.

I feel like a lab rat who has to choose between A or B, rat-posion or plutonium. I have had this choice for decades now. For awhile it was not a problem because I naively believed in the choices.

Everywhere I see is the corruption. In the media, business, government, legal system, schools, people thinking they would get rich in buying /selling house. Everything money driven, not once thinking of our society. It does not matter who in the White House because the corruption will remain, it is everywhere

So how do we get out of the mess? One thing is for sure, if we keep playing the same dishonest game we will not!

Recognize that our system of government was designed during a simpler time. Today we have approx 536 people at the federal level representing 333,000,000 American people that forgot how to be citizens. It is simply not possible for this to work.

Our so-called representatives do not represent us. Once they get your vote they can do whatever they want. We get to vote one-time every four years (in general) they get to vote everyday and they represent the interests of abstract entities (special interests groups, corporation, etc.). Last time I checked special interests groups, corporation, etc. are not citizens.

Some representatives seek out campaign contributions from foreign governments (Clinton, Barak excepting contributions from the Chinese communists) for example while we the people watch.

If our system of government was an computer operating system, then we have pre-beta DOS. We need a new operating system and a serious hardware upgrade.

I believe the long term solution is to remove the possibility of corruption inherent with representative democracy by moving away from the one-to-many model and move to a many-to-many model thus making it impervious to corruption and at the same time demanding that the people become citizens interested in the destiny of our country.

His comment re knife/gun business is NOT intended to be taken literally as most are conizant of. However, his point is this: If you come at me with WHATEVER to abuse, misuse, insult, debase, disrespect, act in a draconian manner…he won't sit down and allow it–but come out swinging just harder.

Come on folks. Get a life. Let call a spade a spade. Many do not…repeat: DO NOT WISH to see a BLACK person as a PRESIDENT! Period. Many hide under the guise of some other excuse to spew their feelings, albeit hateful, negative or otherwise.

I truly don't have a "horse in this race," but I can certainly see what is taking place here. And, to be truthful–it certainly isn't the behavior of some Americans who believe in equal and fair for all!

  85. Seems that Obama's gun offer was predicated on McCain first drawing a knife, with no indication of anything less than civil campaigning as long as the other side doesn't draw first blood. Self defense seems fair in politics or war, but unnecessarily throwing the first punch should be out of bounds in either. So if the Republicans (527s, talk show hosts, and PACs as well as the "official" campaign) can refrain from being nasty, maybe there will be no need for the metaphorical knives and guns. What a nice thought.

Only a terrorist or a violent person would even suggest bringing a gun to the table. My kids would never even say that when they were playing cops and robbers.
With brilliant Hillary we would have gotten that sociopath Bill wandering the halls without a job. Now we have a guy suggesting bringing a gun to settle a conflict.

WHAT DO WE DO NOW??? He appeared to be a thoughtful conflict solver but now he appears to be willing to solve even political conflicts with fellow Americans in the manner of SIRHAN SIRHAN,

Or more continuing to refuse to drill off of our coats and in Alaska, continuing to stand in the way of nuclear energy, continuing to refuse the technology that would use nuclear energy to extract Carbon from the air to produce petroleum. Yep, that last one was developed at Los Alamos.

But don't go around bringing up policies and ideals around Obama. His campaign has never been about that. Hope. Change. And now guns.

  88. Obama doesn't need to bring a gun - he can simply brew up the 7 plagues of Egypt and call forth the four horsemen of the Apocalypse! He said in his acceptance speech that his selection as the Democratic nominee is the beginning, the day we finally provide health care for the sick (like healing lepers), finally provide good jobs to the unemployed (you know, splitting loaves of bread for the believers) and the day the "oceans begin to lower" (guess this is like his holiness' version of walking on water). You see, apparently America has never done this before - according to his words not mine (I always thought this was greatest nation on Earth!). ALSO, remember criticizing him is a sin because all of his blind zealots brand you racist when you point out this man is a know-nothing, rabble rousing, demagogue with no grasp of reality. 97. Obama is taking the presidential campaign in a predictably ugly direction when he starts using the language of the ghetto to make his point. I doubt that the McCain campaign would bring a "knife" to any fight. Sen. McCain has said that he will run an ethical campaign, and I believe him. Obama's latest hyperbole only serves to illustrate his true mindset. He came up through the dirty street politics of Chicago's South Side, and now it shows.

The South Side, in case any of you don't know, is the grimy underbelly of Chicago. It is full of drug dealers, whores and paroled felons. East 57th Street, near the University of Chicago looks like something out of a Fallujah, Iraq guidebook. And this is where Obama made his political bones. This is where he built his base.

It is therefore no surprise that he would express himself like a South Side "gangstah" when attempting to motivate his followers. You will hear more of this from Obama. And then he will turn around and, through surrogates of course, call every criticism of himself "racist". This is going to be a very interesting campaign season.

It is eerily reminiscent of Hitler's rise to power in 1930's Germany. A seeming buffoon who the liberal old guard thought they could control, Hitler rose to unprecedented power by labelling every attack, every criticism not "racist" but rather "communist". Then he advocated violence to silence his political oppostion. Any political opponent who brought a knife to a NAZI gunfight was dispatched very quickly indeed. The labels are different, but the tactics remain the same.

Obama most certainly must have read "Mein Kampf" before planning his campaign. He appears to be following the same blueprint. It is no surprise then that this is the kind of political campaign he is contemplating. Given his political origins on the South Side of Chicago where such practices are quite common, none of this is surprising.

Without a tele-prompter he can talk his way out of anything. It is the precise reason he has denied McCain's request to have 10 Town Hall forums where it is not scripted but real talk with real people. Have you listened to Obama stutter and get all mixed up when he is in these situations. It is laughable. This could never be more true than when you hear about Barack Hussein Obama. His friendships with men and women of questionable character demonstrates just what type of America he would like to create. He wants an America that reflects his friendships with racist wacky preacher Reverend Wright, convicted felon Tony "the Syrian" Rezko, terrorist Bill "Weatherman Bomber" Ayers, and his crazy pessimistic wife who has never been "proud" of this nation (until her cancer-stick husband is promoted to the top of the Democratic Party after less than 3 uneventful years in Congress).

There is no reason to run these influencial people in the mud and ruin their reputation for no good reason. Let's stick to the issue of high gas price, high mortgages, high interest credit cards, how to get out of Iraq and focus on terrists in Afganistan (where over 180 terrists have escaped recently, due to of the lack of troops on the ground), and to the millions of people who has lost their jobs.
