DeLay: 'Unless Obama Proves Me Wrong, He Is a Marxist'

@ 5:24 pm by Andy Barr

Former House Republican Leader Tom DeLay (Texas) called Barack Obama a "Marxist" on the Mike Gallagher radio show Thursday.

Explaining that Obama clinching the Democratic nomination is a good thing for John McCain, DeLay said Obama's "weakness" is that "nobody knows him."

"And if McCain does not define him as what he is — hey, I have said publicly, and I will again, that unless he proves me wrong, he is a Marxist," DeLay said.

The radio host agreed with DeLay, who is facing money laundering charges, saying Obama is "desperately trying to cover up what seems to be the kind of old school Marxist radical liberal failed ideology."

"Absolutely," DeLay said. "No doubt about it."

  1. I'm just counting the days until Delay finds himself in the Crowbar Hotel and they throw away the key!

  2. Tom DeLay is a criminal. This guy needs to be in jail, not capitol hill. Why would anyone trust his slander?

    Comment by Harper — June 5, 2008 @ 5:39 pm

  3. Class warfare? Check.
    Punishing the wealthy? Check.
The idea that capitalism is bad? Check.

Sounds like a Marxist to me.

  4. Most if not all democrats are marxist. They believe that Government is the answer to all of societies ills. Lets show the american public the colors that they truly represent which is the solid red of communism!

    Comment by Paul S — June 5, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

  5. Finally, someone with the guts to call Obama precisely what he is. I wish people would wake up and look underneath all that eloquent talk that comes from Obama's mouth.

    Comment by Peter — June 5, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

  6. We need to go Communist in the USA. Don't you all know how much better life would be if we just all went Communist? I know for a fact that Obama feels the saem way about this country as Rev. Wright does, and you should too.

Once Obama is elected, we will start to instill Re-education camps for all those who do not agree with us. Our day is coming. I, Larry the Liberal, has spoken.

    Comment by Larry The Liberal — June 5, 2008 @ 5:44 pm

  7. I can't believe DeLay said that!!! I mean, duh, what with Obama's "plan" to punish businesses, seize profits, his wife's echoed sentiments of admitted socialist and anti-capitalist Cornel West, and his support to institute government-run healthcare … "Marxist" is a label that should stick.

    Comment by John K — June 5, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

  8. Let us remember that the DA in Austin brought charges against DeLay for a law that was written two years after the alleged offenses took place. Not to mention the grandjury shopping the DA did to get an indictment. Or, to ignore the fact that if you paid up, the charges could be dropped by that DA…..paid to his own or his buddies campaign funds.

    Comment by Leroy Johnson — June 5, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

  9. Thankfully someone has said it. If you look at what Obama's positions are they are directly out of the Marxist playbook. Very few people realize that his political mentor is an admitted Marxist and Obama holds many of the same values. I just hope that the American people wake up and find an understanding just who this man really is before November's election. This man is scary and is bad news for the United States. The media has done everything possible to shield Obama from any scrutiny and it is time to pull back the curtains.

    Comment by rbcintexas — June 5, 2008 @ 5:47 pm

  10. This is not slander. With minimal research, one can easily discover the Marxist connections Obama has had during his mysterious rise to prominence in the Democrat Party.

    Comment by Norma T — June 5, 2008 @ 5:48 pm

  11. DeLay is correct. Obama attended a church for 20 years that preaches "black liberation theology" which is simply Marxism masquerading as Christianity. (Farakhan and Pleger are also Marxists in Muslim and Catholic guise, that's why they have so much in common.) See the insightful article by Kyle-Anne Shiver at American Thinker dot com.

    Comment by Fensler — June 5, 2008 @ 5:49 pm

  12. There, some Republican finally used the M word. Capitalism and freedom has lost battle after battle due to the refusal of the Republicans to identify the Marxists as Marxists. The Marxist tactic of demonizing those who speak the truth has been very effective with those whose theological philosophical foundation supposedly holds the truth as the penultimate standard.

    Comment by Kris — June 5, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

  13. The problem we have is that both Candidates, McCain and Obama are Marxists. Bob Barr looks to be the only choice to keep Capitalism going.

Namecalling by criminal blowhards grasping for relevance is just sad.

  17. Do any of you know the meaning of the word 'communist'?

Unless Obama is for the abolition of ownership of property, and for the state control of all businesses, then he is not a communist.

Anyone saying this is just trying to be provocative.

Come now, we can beat him with the truth, we don't need to lie to beat Obama.

By the way….Where the heck is Osama Bin Laden?
Do you think you made a wise choice with Jr? McCain is more of the same my friends!

    Comment by Ben — June 5, 2008 @ 5:57 pm

  21. Marxism means many things, but any definition that doesn't include the nationalization of all agriculture and industry is pretty off base. Last I heard, this is not something Obama has proposed. Even if you don't like Obama or his policies, you should understand that ignoring the meaning of words makes them worthless. Find a new slur.

You brainless fools leave yourselves no objective wiggle room when you make absurd statements like that..what's worse, you don't even see the irony when someone like Tom Delay gives you your talking points. Could you be any more stupid? Is it physically possible?

    Comment by MacGuffin — June 5, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

  25. Most people are too stupid in this country to even know what Marxist is. That's what an American education will get you. Might as well just stick to race, religion, guns, and abortion.

Your right, Obama does have a problem, know one knows him. McCain has a bigger problem, people do know him, and have seen him perform some wicked 180's on his policy's since becoming the nominee. Looks like the straight talk express is full of flip-flops.

My Question to McCain is this… How many times a day does a 72 year old man change his diaper?

  30. Ain't McCarthyism grand? You don't have to prove your case, you only have to make the accusation, and put the burden of proof on the accused.

That, my friends, is straight out of the book of Stalin.

    Who is the Marxist, then?

    Comment by Reb Ubsr Doumb — June 5, 2008 @ 6:04 pm

  31. This is irresponsible of Tom Delay as he appears to be trying to re-insert himself into the national debate. The notion that Barack is anything resembling a marxist shows Tom Delay's little understanding of a) Obama's positions and b) the definition of marxism.

Obama wants smaller government if you haven't paid attention - considering the current administration has vastly expanded the government's role in the everyday individual. (taken your shoes off lately?) He wants to roll back a lot of the Republican actions - but the biggest reason he is nowhere near a marxist, esp in Delay's insenuation, is that he wants open, transparent government. (Notice he told the DNC to stop taking money from PACS and Lobbyists today.)

Regardless - Delay is only ruining his own future prospects by slandering a political candidate, esp one as known as Obama (let's face it, he's not unknown now)

Fox news has the same four neocons grousing on everyday on all of their shows(Morris, Vanity, Beetle Barnes and sour Kraut)…talk radio has a few (Vanity, tin-Levin, etc). A few crooks thrown in (Delay, Ollie North) and you've got the whole Right wing team. 34. Marxism is no biggy. Marxism is untenable and quickly falls apart whenever it is tried. The problem is that it is then replaced with Stalinism. Obama with his nose out of joint because people don't apreciate his destruction of the economy for their own good, and surrounded by true believers who blame it on the "reactionary" conservatives and "bitter" religious believers, that's what you have to worry about. Canada won't be near big enough.

    Comment by John Bull — June 5, 2008 @ 6:07 pm

  35. This made Drudge, so we're sure to see an onslaught of the lunatic fringe.

DeLay is a venal, corrupt criminal. I sincerely doubt anybody (except for the aforementioned lunatic fringe) gives a damn about his opinion.

    Comment by AMB — June 5, 2008 @ 6:08 pm

  36. I just wonder if DeLay has stopped beating his wife yet.

    Comment by AMB — June 5, 2008 @ 6:09 pm

  37. The left in this country does not care the Obama is a Marxist. If you watch these comments they will either 1) denounce Delay to divert the issue, or 2) go to the other extreme and say Obama can't be a Marxist because he hasn't tried to seize all the property yet.

Unfortunately many, perhaps most, on the left are actually into socialism. So even if they realize it's true, they'll deny it to get Obama elected.

However, no one on the left is willing to debate his stance on the issues, point by point, to see just how much he leans towards socialism in nearly everything he believes.

    Comment by Shakem — June 5, 2008 @ 6:11 pm

  38. Is it irresponsible to suggest that until it is proven otherwise, Tom Delay is morally bankrupt, and the human equivalent of a gutter ball.

    Comment by Tom — June 5, 2008 @ 6:11 pm

  39. Of course Obama is a closet Marxist, so is Hillary Clinton. Good debate question: how do you differ in approach to government from Karl Marx? (uhhhhh…)

Spend one year in China and see if you come back with the same feelings about communism. Dare you tough guy.

    Comment by Tolarry Liberal — June 5, 2008 @ 6:13 pm

  41. DeLay displays the ignorance typical of senior republicans when it comes to substantial issues, being it the difference between Shiites and Sunni, or as in this case between Marxists and a person who suggests societies have responsibilities towards its members. Let us forgive them being confused, it is quite common in the frail and elderly.

    Comment by mdk — June 5, 2008 @ 6:13 pm

  42. Multinational capitalism has the unfortunate side effect of systemic amorality, which is the complement of the profit principle. Perhaps some checks on that institutionalized phenomenon, via Obama's morally earnest policy ideas, will do something about that.

  44. Fascism is a more totalitarian form of socialism and communism. Stalin started calling anyone who differed with his brand of communism fascist.

Progressives in this country liked fascism untill Hitler. Both German and Italian fascist parties were socialist.

Liberalism is liberty, less government thus rightwing, ie… liberal economics, liberal arts universities ect…

Do you think libertines want a government telling them what they could not do?

I've yet to see anyone here correctly define Marxism.

    Comment by Thug LIfe — June 5, 2008 @ 6:25 pm

  51. Marxist? Why aren't you Republican hypocrites upset by the name calling, after all you cry big tears when the Bush Regime is compared to Fascists, which when compared to Fascism in Italy under Mussolini is much more accurate than comparing Liberal Democrats to Marxists. Take a look at a picture of Tom Delay, put a little mustache on it and you have a picture of a chubby Adolf Hitler, listen to him rant and he's even more like Adolf.

Fascists also have a long relationship with the Bush family, Grandpa Bush had his assets seized in 42′ under the trading with the enemy Act, and Bush41 was forced to dismiss two former Nazi's from his campaign committee back in 88′.

There's a reason only two Senators have been elected to the Presidency in the past 100 years, most have been in Office for many years and like McCain have left a very long trail of slime, Obama's trail is only 2 years long.

    Comment by Lew — June 5, 2008 @ 6:26 pm

  54. Obama isn't a Marxist.
He is a hard left, Paleo-liberal.

And you can note the knuckledraggers who wish to affirm the primacy of the Obamaist ideology, from their postings.

His membership in Rev. Wright's church, calls into question his commitment to a color blind society!

His willingness to associate with Weather Underground terrorists / Communists Dorn and Ayers only serve to highlight his Paleo-liberalism!

    Comment by James X — June 5, 2008 @ 6:27 pm

  55. It's really funny how some folks deal in such absolutes about Obama…the same folks that talk about conservatism have cheered over the last 7+ years, the "new Conservatives" commonly referred to as "neocons" allowed gov't ( size, intrusion and debt) to grow more than it has under any previous administration without batting an eye. Get it right. Obama wants everybody to have the opportunity to achieve the promise of this country. It doesn't mean going after every cent any rich person has ever made. It means setting an agenda to move the country forward and getting the nation onboard. Corporations act in their own best interests, regardless of whether or not they realize they are part of our countries and communities. I think Obama will help gently remind them profit margin isn't the only concern. What does profit margin mean if you're killing the middle class golden goose?

    Comment by PHCDR Herm — June 5, 2008 @ 6:27 pm

  56. I am amazed at how little most Americans (and especially Republicans) know about the world.

England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, and Norway have successful Social Democratic governemnts that are far left of any American liberal politics. They have social security, free education, free healthcare, and plenty of people who are still rich to boot.

Liberals in this country are not social democrats, socialists, or Marxists of all things. North Korea is Marxist.

Republicans seem to be attracted to simplistic slogans more than actual facts. I guess they don't like to get bogged down with them.

    Comment by Patriot — June 5, 2008 @ 6:28 pm

  57. By the comments I have read, I truly believe that liberalism is a mental disorder. Don't misunderstand me, though, as the republican party is as screwed up as the democrat party, just in different ways. I feel I have no choice but to vote third party, or Ron Paul (both with clear conscience), as the candidates presented are very bad, and worse. Obama will be the beginning of the end of an American era. When it gets bad enough, I will do my part as a patriot. To quote Thomas Jefferson: "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." Also from T. Jefferson: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." I pray we never see the tyrant.

That crowd of traitors would sell their firt-born child [not to mention their souls] to the Communists just to make a buck! When was the last time you could buy something "Made in America?"

This traitorous crowd has more in common with Chinese Communists than it does with Main Street Americans. The only reason they still like Main Street Americans is because Main Street Americans are the most voracious consumers in the world.

But we all know that's changing. Once they have sucked the last ounce of blood out of the American consumer, they won't lose a minute's sleep in abandoning us. They've made their beds with the Chinese Communists; they'll have 1.3 billion prosperous Chinese consumers to exploit.

So, back to Mr. Obama. Oh well….

  66. FINALLY! A Republican with enough testosterone to call Obama precisely what he is. A Marxist is someone who sees all human existence in terms of people seeking economic advantage over others. It is a dreary, dehumanizing, anal-sadistic, obsessional, and totalitarian belief system which substitutes Government for God. Its immorality tries to hide behind a sanctimonious veneer of "equality and fairness." In fact it is a Big Con involving the exact opposite of these things and is nothing more than a power grab by Egomaniacs. Obama intends to nationalize Health Care just like Hillary tried to. When the Government nationalizes something (like Stalin did with Soviet agriculture in the 1930's) the government simply announces that it now OWNS a group of people and their property. I know Obama plans to announce his ownership of me as a physician; that's what his "Health Care Reform" is, nothing less. Obama and Hillary rely on the innumerable useful idiots like those name - calling fools on this web site who are too uneducated and inexperienced to look beneath Obama's rhetoric from a perspective informed by a knowledge of Human History and Psychology. If Obama manages to do this I am out of here: I will not be Nationalized by anyone.

  73. I am a conservative, which used to mean Republican but President Bush has managed to steer the latter so far off course that the two now butt heads on most issues. I am also an economist, and Obama, Clinton, and a few other democrats have taken over their party and re-defined it. It now IS the party of Marxism/Socialism/Communism. It doesn't matter if Delay, Craig, Rove, or any other Republican you may despise say it; it's a fact based on their economic principles. Ignorance is America's greatest asset and too many people ignore economic history(and it's definitions; in this case: who is Karl Marx, what did he believe, how did his idea pan out?). They take Econ 101/102 and think they are capable of making informed decisions on economic policy.
Enough with my rant, whether you like him or not, Delay is right. Those of you who are thinking of voting for Obama I'll finish by quoting a letter written as a waring to American in 1787 after becoming a republic. It's entitled "The Fall of the Athenian Republic", and I believe speaks to exactly what we will begin to see should Obama, and other Marxist/Socialist/Communist democrats continue to be elected.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money (generous gifts) from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilization has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence.

    From bondage to spiritual faith;
    from spiritual faith to great courage;
    from courage to liberty;
    from liberty to abundance,
    from abundance to selfishness;
    from selfishness to complacency,
    from complacency to apathy,
    from apathy to dependency,
    from dependence back into bondage."

The growth and prosperity of the country has always depended on government to finance our infrastructures from the earliest canals to the most modern highways, and to curtail business fraud and abuse. This is not Maxism, Socialism or Communism. This is a Mixed Economy, the hallmark of all modern prosperous nations, including our own.

  87. Statements depicting Obama as the road to America's ruin are just mind-boggling, given the past 8 years. We've operated long enough under an administration voted into the White House by a segment of the populace that largely voted against their own economic interests. High disapproval ratings, the highest ever of a sitting president, indicate that many who voted for him probably wish they hadn't. Reagan once asked famously "Are you better off now than four years ago?" I know for me and most of my middle class friends, colleagues, associates, etc. — Republican or Democrat — the answer is decidely "no." Is the current administration to blame for all our woes. Probably not. But, the current administration certainly hasn't helped, and the condition we're in has almost certainly been exasperated by an ideology that really doesn't give a rat's ass for the middle class, much less those of lower economic means. The situation is untenable. I don't view Obama as the overnight saviour of us all, in this regard. But, compared to McCain, I believe he has the leadership ability and vision needed to steer this country in a new and better direction. As for the "marxist" and "communist" namecalling, that's poppycock and others have already pointed out that the definitions of either don't apply to Obama, not by any stretch of reasonable imagination.

  91. In saying that Obama is a Marxist reveals a complete ignorance of what a Marxist is. DeLay is not a Nazi, but neither is he a real conservative either. Obama is a statist liberal, and that cannot be denied. But there is a world of difference between the liberalism displayed by Obama, and the totalitarian Leninism pursued by Stalin. Stalin did not solidify his totalitarian rule by cultivating a welfare state, but by sheer brute force. DeLay is an ignoramus at best, or a cynical label-monger who uses caricatures that sound historical but really are not. The use of ad hominem aspersions and even name-calling are signs not of political acumen but of desperation and intellectual fatigue.

The problem is that you libs don't understand that sometimes war is required.

But the "mcSame" title is a gem. Here's a guy that is so far from Bush it's funny, in fact the media portrayed him as a "maverick" for being against the administration and you watch how fast the media holds the liberals water and changes their tune to paint him in the same light. The media…what a disgrace.

The greatest advantage of the US political system is that it forces MODERATION in the presidency, and expels from its ranks all those who go against the will of the majority of Americans, who are SENSIBLE MODERATES, not raving ONE-ISSUE zealots. Obama is not a Marxist for petes sake and calling him that does a disservice to all those who fought and died against TRUE MARXISM/FASCISM.

McCain vs. Obama… If you really look at it, the biggest difference is their image and the stereotypes associated with their political parties. Lord knows the past two presidents have broken the mold of their respective parties…

Bush Republicanism = unnecessary and incompetent foreign wars, extreme partisanship, maxed out government, (MOST IMPORTANTLY) a thorough trampling of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Clinton Democrat = lowered welfare (w/ bipartisan republican support), limited but effective foreign interventions (except somalia), balanced budget, reduced government.

Then again, JFK today would be considered anything but a Democrat. He's not a whacked out lib like today's versions.

PS Kennedy also started two military incursions against two countrys (Vietnam and Cuba) that didn't attack us first. Oh the horror.

  114. Actually Lew:

"In the 1994-2002 General Social Surveys (GSS), Republicans have over 6/10ths of a year more education on average than Democrats. Republicans also have a higher final mean educational degree. Further, Republicans scored better than Democrats on two word tests in the GSS—a short vocabulary test and a modified analogies test.

"If one breaks down the data by party affiliation and political orientation, the most highly educated group is conservative Republicans, who also score highest on the vocabulary and analogical reasoning tests. Liberal Democrats score only insignificantly lower than conservative Republicans.

“The least educated subgroups are moderate and conservative Democrats, who also score at the bottom (or very near the bottom) on vocabulary and analogy tests."

Liberals pander to the uneducated poor by promising them handouts so they don't have to take any personal responsibility and have no incentive to better themselves and society.
