DAY'S END ROUNDUP

@ 6:52 pm by Andy Barr

Sen. Robert Byrd’s (D-W.Va.) endorsement of Barack Obama - one week after the Illinois senator lost the West Virginia primary by 41 percentage points - has shocked many bloggers this Monday afternoon. Bloggers also press Geraldine Ferraro to back up her charge that Obama is a “sexist” and wonder if Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) plans to campaign for the House from the big house.

The timing of Byrd’s endorsement surprises Andrew Sullivan as the senator had to overrule the overwhelmingly majority of his state to side with Obama. And RedState’s California Yankee never thought he would live to see the day when a former KKK member endorsed a black candidate for president. But despite the attention gained by the endorsement, Talk Left’s Big Tent Democrat doubts the state will be competitive for Obama in the fall.

Ferraro’s threat to not vote for Obama could be the second of the six surviving Democratic veep candidates to defect from the party’s frontrunner, Top of The Ticket points out noting that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) supports John McCain. A Daily Kos blogger thinks its fine for Lieberman to abandon the likely Democratic nominee because of policy differences, but if Ferraro is going to throw out a charge of sexism, she needs to back it up.

A new ethics complaint filed against Fossella has David Kurtz at TPM wondering if taxpayers paid for the embattled Congressman’s misdeeds. And Alex Balk at Radar’s D.C. Shuffle wants to know if Fossella, who has yet to resign, intends to campaign for reelection from jail.
