Huckabee Jokes About Obama Getting Shot At

@ 4:32 pm by Andy Barr

During a speech to the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville, Kentucky Friday, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee joked to the audience that an offstage noise was Barack Obama avoiding gunfire.

"That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak," Huckabee said. "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor."

The line was met with laughter.

  3. Christian message of love from Reverend Huckabee. No wonder Mrs. Obama has not found much to be proud of as an African American. The abuse we have asked African Americans to put up with in this country is UNGODLY.

  6. Huckanazi…you can't criticize Huckabee for making jokes about Obama if you are going to call him names and say he should be hanged. (It's hanged, not hung.)

  7. #2 and #3 please…how short sighted are you? the joke was aimed at obama's insult about crazies with guns and bibles.

  9. Oh boo-hoo! Here come the PC liberal PANSIES decrying what an offense this comment is!

Grow a pair, people! I am MUCH more concerned about what OBAMA would do to this country than what anyone will do to him.

I am sure HE's safe. It's AMERICA I am worried about!

  25. I just love this country. Where else can a group of Americans be referred to as a "bunch of idiots" yet H. Clinton is referred to as a "Senator" LOLOLOL

  26. Huckster, that Prankster.
For a preacher, he seems to conveniently know little about other faiths (Don't Mormons consider Jesus and Satan as brothers?)and now he jokes about taking a shot at Osama.

If you want to know why the Republicans don't have a respectable presidential nominee, you can thank Ol' Huckster for his knee capping cheap shots on Romney. No doubt, he'll be just as helpful to McCain. As a conservative, I could care less if McCain wins. He'll have to do it without my vote.

Comment by Craig Livingstone, Red Wing, uSA — May 16, 2008 @ 4:54 pm

  27. Considering how Sen. Paul Wellstone, Sen. Mel Carnahan and JFK Jr. all died under suspicious circumstances, I believe that Obama is in real danger from these rightwing lunatics.

    Comment by Martin Evans — May 16, 2008 @ 4:54 pm

  28. Wow that has to be one of the most misleading headlines I've ever seen. "Huckabee Jokes about Obama Getting Shot at?" Nowhere in the quotation does Huckabee say anything about anyone getting shot at– only that someone "aimed a gun at him." Sheesh. That's a pretty desperate stretch for an attention grab.

    Comment by Tyler — May 16, 2008 @ 4:55 pm

  29. "The line was met with laughter."
    How depressing.
I was surprised by the racist "man on the street" quotes from the West Virginia primary. I guess I should not have been.
The more things change, the more they stay the same

    Comment by Captain Jack — May 16, 2008 @ 4:55 pm

  30. Just like Charlton Heston before him, Hickabee apparently knows this audience well. He knew that the gun nuts would enjoy a joke about someone getting shot at. This is what the NRA is all about. But they DO NOT represent the average law-abiding gun-owner in this country. So, NRA, pull your gun from Heston's dead cold hands and go home and point it at each other.

    Comment by RussinBR — May 16, 2008 @ 4:56 pm

  31. all republicans are racists and bigots and should move out of north america. Communism should be given a chance to be implemented here, that way we would all have health care and homes and jobs and happiness.

    Comment by liberal — May 16, 2008 @ 4:56 pm

  32. Seems like the joke was that Obama was AFRAID of getting shot at and made the noise while tripping over a chair. Not quite the same as a joke about "Obama getting shot at" or "avoiding gunfire", but stating it accurately would not have made for as inflammatory of a headline, either, I guess. Depends whether you want to be a reporter or a comedy writer.

    Comment by MartinMandy — May 16, 2008 @ 4:57 pm

  33. If another adult was to state a similar comment in public, I have no doubt that he/she would be detained, removed and interrogated by law enforcement. This kind of comment is beyond any civil, professional human being, let alone, a politcal figure who is making a public speech! How and why are such comments taken as a joke?

    Comment by ScottH — May 16, 2008 @ 4:57 pm

  34. I'm surprised there was even anyone around to hear him speak. How long has it been since anyone even cared what Huckabee said? The fact he thinks it's unusual for someone to take cover when being targeted just shows how out of touch he is.

    Comment by uh-huh — May 16, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

  35. Next thing you know he'll be blaming the USA for spreading AIDS and crack in the minority communities…..ooops….sorry…that position has been appropriated already. Back to your regularly sheduled broadcast….

  36. You idiots it was a Hillary Clinton sniper fire + NRA meeting joke.

    Comment by Mike — May 16, 2008 @ 4:59 pm

  37. What happened to free speech is that we're exercising it in criticizing and/or making fun of Huckleberry. Apparently the conservatives can't take criticism either. I find it hilarious that, given our somewhat violent past and the tragic ends many African American leaders have me, the conservatives leap to the defense of the hillbilly, and don't even acknowledge that it is a tad bit offensive. That being said, I think he just botched a joke. Just make fun of him with better jokes and call him "Huckleberry"

    Comment by Russell — May 16, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

  41. Incidently, I AM an NRA member and I WILL be voting for Obama in November. We aren't all idiots.

    Comment by uh-huh — May 16, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

  42. If a normal citizen made that joke about Huckabee, we'd be investigated by the Secret Service. I think Huckabee needs to get treated the exact same way.

    Comment by moderate — May 16, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

  43. Why would his first thought be to make a joke about Obama getting shot at? It's not that I really care about the 'joke' itself, but why is the most foremost thought that idea? It says a lot about what the crazy NRA-Evangelical nutjob crowd things is funny…and I'm a gun-owner…

    Comment by NSR — May 16, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

  44. Look, it was a poor joke. But if we Dems are going to say that our candidate can't be held to account for every slip of the tongue or poorly worded comment, then we have to extend the same courtesy to the GOP. Huckabee, for all his shortcomings, is not a vindictive man.

    Comment by Louisville Lip — May 16, 2008 @ 5:02 pm

  45. I guess the reporter thought this was “shocking”, but it didn’t sound like that big of a deal to me. I wonder why she isn’t as shocked when somebody gets shot by a criminal and cannot defend themselves because the government has prevented them from owning a gun. Personally, that seems a bit more shocking than a bad joke, and it happens every day.

Comment by Let it go Libs — May 16, 2008 @ 5:03 pm

  46. I think it is interesting that the author said, in the headline, and implied, in the narrative that Huckabee said that someone was shooting at Obama. That's not what the quote said. The quote implies that Obama is afraid of guns and nothing is said about a gun being fired.

    Comment by Gene — May 16, 2008 @ 5:03 pm

  47. But it was stupid Russell. It was a very stupid thing to say, especially what he said and where he said it. Huckabee just lost my respect and we'll all get to see him lampooned on the late nite talk shows now for being such a stupendous idiot (something I never thought I would say about him).

    Comment by fletch — May 16, 2008 @ 5:05 pm

  48. Sad! It just wasn't funny.

It was just about as funny as Ann Coulter.

    Comment by Monster-D — May 16, 2008 @ 5:05 pm

  49. Aww, good for Mike he's getting attention again. And don't worry apologists, he won't get anywhere near the "liberal pansy crying blah blah blah" reaction you're secretly hoping for, since that would require public interest in him.

    Comment by Lol — May 16, 2008 @ 5:06 pm

  50. Gee, I don't remember this much disgust when Spike Lee said that Charley Heston should be shot with a .44 Magnum! You libs have some unequal standards.

    Comment by Palerider — May 16, 2008 @ 5:08 pm

  51. It's the sign of a good liberal when you can be offended by anything, anywhere, anytime by anyone not a liberal. If they are a liberal and say something outrageous…THEN its free speach.

    Comment by MD Dem — May 16, 2008 @ 5:08 pm

  52. For those who say, "It's just a joke. Lighten up.":

What would you be saying if Obama had made the same joke about George Bush?

I don't think you would regard it as funny.

    Comment by Neal — May 16, 2008 @ 5:09 pm

  53. You couldn't make this joke about George Bush because George isn't scared of guns. The joke was funny because Obama's policies reflect someone who would panic if there was a gun in the room.

This false outrage over this comment is laughable at best.

    Comment by Jason — May 16, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

  54. Ah yes, a White Southern Good 'Ol Boy…

I guess it was just a matter of time until he went after the black man…

    Comment by Rob — May 16, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

  55. Would you of the speech police (Susan, Brian) explain to me how this is racist? As far as jokes go, I think it's a quite lacking on the humor scale, but racist? How long after people like you get into power before the jack-booted thugs can come lock you up for something you say?

  74. Why is this such a big deal!? Yesterday Bush's comment (that wasn't even aimed at Obama, but at Democrats stance that talking to terrorists is gonna make a difference) and now this? Huckabee didn't say anything about someone killing Obama or shooting at Obama. He simply joked that he tripped over a chair because someone aimed a gun at him (ridiculing his stance on gun ownership which is taking guns away from us). That is in no way a racist or harmful comment. If he had said it about Hillary everyone would be like "OH Huckabee hates women OOHH NOO!! EVIL EVIL!!" I'm so sick of the Democrats getting all upset over little comments that are blown way out of proportion. They will be the end of this country.

It's like that group of white folks that went nuts to get Speedy Gonzales taken off cartoons so that Mexicans would not be offended. Turns out Mexicans protested to get Speedy back on the air. I am an Obama supporter, and he probably would have thought the joke funny. Eddie Murphy made a simiar joke about the first black presidential candidate years ago, and Jessie Jackson thought it was very funny.

  80. Chris - yes Huckabee is a joke but whenever the liberals attack him he's our lovable family GOP joke and we defend him!

    Comment by jeff — May 16, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

  81. Please be specific in your reporting. He didn't joke about Obama getting shot at; he joked about Obama having a gun pointed at him.

A fine distinction, maybe, but it's the difference between a murder allusion and an anecdote. This joke might be mildly offensive, but, in the context of an NRA meeting, is also mildly funny. Give him a break. If you'd seen this on the Daily Show, with Stewart saying it, you wouldn't give it a second thought.

And what liberal here hasn't made a joke about Bush actually getting shot. (Or Cheney, for that matter…) It's not like this is new, unique, or really even that offensive in the context or our current political climate. I can think of other politicians who have said crazier things (see also: Howard Dean) and meant them.

  83. There isn't anything "funny" about (former Rev.) Mike Huckabee's comment. He would never say anything like that about Hillary, so why is it okay for him to say such a thing against Barack? Huckabee, has essentially sold his former-Christian soul for political power.

  84. #8 you are crazy!! Whatever the joke was about it is not funny at all! Someone getting shot under any circumstances is not something to joke about. Especially someone who is going to be the next president of the US! Between Huckabee's joke today, McCain's Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran and hundreds of things GW has said shows how trully classless they are. And #84, you are crazy too, like pointing a gun at him is so much better! you mentioned people say GW should be shot, as much as you'd think people want to say that considering all the death he has been responsible for, American and not, I don't know of any former Presidential Candidate saying something so rude! We are talking about Mike Huckabee who will likely be the next Repub presidential nominee in 2012. we aren't talking about people posting on this site. And people joke about Cheney shooting people because Cheney shoots people!

  85. As an avid Second Ammendment advocate, I find nothing amusing in asinine comments like Gov. Huckabee. People being shot at is unfunny. I have had it happen to me twice.
It is one thing to mock someone "a car backfired and he dove for cover", but something completely reprehensible to do what Mike Huckabee did.
I would never vote for Barack Obama, because he is a socialist and I will never be a member of the NRA because they never do get their act together. Harlan Carter would never have put up with garbage like this and no hunter, gun owner nor Second Ammendment advocate finds Gov. Huckabee amusing at all.

  88. I don't find the comment amusing at all, enlightening, perhaps. I thought he was better than that.
Now I see to comment about about it is to be labeled a 'whiny liberal or democrat' according to the Republican's who know everything and don't require a second party to lead.
One party system is enough for them, never mind a dissenting voice, or someone who thinks or acts differently.

So when George Bush makes Israel's 60th Birthday celebration a Republican campaign stop, we are not allowed to complain because we are just whining.

I can not wait until November, when all these intolerant, bigots, who use God as an accessory to their own hatreds, are voted out for good.

What do Republican's and Kim Jong Il have in common?
If you don't agree with them, you are deemed mentally ill and need re-education.

Is funny because most liberals and democrats are able to disagree and argue the facts, not drag out the Bible or wrap the argument in the flag and end it there.

It is a much higher calling to question your leaders than to blindly follow them.

The only funny thing about the comment is the way it exposes the blind followers and their way of thinking.

I hear noose jokes are a guaranteed laugh, too.

Shame on you Mr. Huckabee, I had a much higher opinion of you before this matter.

Those of us who do remember those days understand that there are certain things that responsible leaders cannot say, and this is one of them. Of course he was joking, but the point is that there could be some crazy person out there who doesn't think so, and scary as it is, that's the world we live in. Regardless of one's own political views, one would do well to recognize this fact and thus would find the former governor's comments shocking and dangerous.

I'm missing the humor. Was he saying that someone would be a better President if they did NOT try and avoid a gun that was aimed at him?

It was, after all, just a joke - a pretty stupid one but still just a joke.

It certainly wasn't racist. It was just an off the cuff attempt at being quick witted. Huckabee actually is pretty funny most of the time. This time he wasn't. All comedians tell jokes that bomb sometimes. Let's move on.

  107. This so called joke by Mike Huckabee (a Minister of the Gospel no less) is appalling and should be condemned by every decent American and here is why. If you put this joke in the context of the history of how violence has been perpetrated onto millions of African Americans (slavery and post slavery), this becomes offensive and should be abhored. The fact that this statement was made at a National Rifle Association event no less-you know, the people who say "guns don't kill people, people kill people" underscores my point. Sadly there are hateful and evil individuals in this country that have or are entertaining the idea of doing unfathomable harm to Mr. Obama. These "innocent jokes" only throw fuel on the flames of such intentions. By calling it just a joke and saying people should get over it only dismisses racist attitudes or gun violence and is not constructive to healing and uniting us as Americans. It was just 40 years ago that Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King were Assassinated. Everyday I pray for my brother in Christ Barack Obama and his family and now I will pray that my other brother in Christ (Mike Huckabee) will no longer mascaraed as an agent of intolerance and hate mongering but return to his calling as a Sheeperd and allow his actions speak as a "light in the world" to exemplify his Savior and not spew the comments or thoughts of his Savior's enemy.

  111. While there is sure to be some hypersensitivity at anything negative or unflattering said about Barack Obama, we can not allow ourselves to be oppressed by the pressure from the advocates of political correctness. Nor can we allow the race baiter's to run roughshod over us.

Barack Obama is a political/public figure. He is and should be subject to the same license that is given to comedians, satirists and everyday citizens directed towards any person of like status.

Just consider all of the cartoons and caricatures that have been aimed at other national figures.

I am an American who is Black (I hate the term African-American) and I feel that if Black people are going to play in the big leagues, then it is time to develop a thicker skin. Barack Obama aspires to the nation's highest office. He and all of his supporters (and I do support Obama) should not only accept humor, both with and without class, but expect it. Not everything is racism.

Remember Governor Wallace? It's amazing how he changed his tune after he was confined to a wheelchair due to a fail attempt on his life. I'm sure he no longer thought that the threat of being shot to death was a minor, laughsble matter. I'm sure the Iraquis don't think gunfire is something to joke about either. Maybe Mr. Huckabee needs to go someplace where the sound of gunfire is close by, rel and he feels his life is in danger. Then maybe he will stop making stupid jokes. Baby, it's time you took an "informational, fact-finding tour" of Iraq. See ya!

  119. First of all, Huck didn't say ANYTHING about Barack "getting shot at"… Go back and review the video. All he said was, "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor." Didn't say anything about shooting.

Probably not exactly the quip Huckabee wished he'd made, in hindsight, but so what? It was a gun crowd — well, it was THE gun crowd — and Huck came off with a lame wisecrack. Why would anyone, except a bunch of thin-skinned liberal jellyfish, be offended? I mean, where is the insult? Is it insulting to suggest that Obummer would dive for the floor if somebody pointed a gun at him? Sounds like a rational reaction to me. Or is it insulting to quip that Barack fell off of his chair? Why are you foaming, hate-filled libs so itchy to pull the trigger on Huckabee? There's nothing here of consequence, it's a non-story.

If you angry "progressive" losers want to roast somebody for making allusions to a possible assassination attempt on Obummer, you can start with his wife, Michele. She was the first one to sensationally (and unnecessarily) conjure up the gruesome image in our minds.

It's been known for a long time that the Republican Party is not where the intelligent people in this country go to live. I'm so sick of the good ol' boy influence they have had on America over the past eight years. With his facial features and the texture of his hair. I don’t think that you would. So thus he calls himself and identifies himself with his more dominant gene (the stronger) a black person It’s just merely biology, sociology and physiology. I would let this BIGOTED, ANTI-WHITE RACIST statement stand alone by itself as to why YOU and Obama should be shot for being the REAL RACISTS, but I will actually go on to answer your question…

I would have been perfectly satisfied if Obama had been MAN ENOUGH to address the issue of race in the classy way Tiger Woods does, by saying I'm multiracial, and anything further earns "no comment." Then I read his RACIST, Anti-White book, Dreams from my RACIST, Alcoholic, Wife-Leaving, Corrupted Government Official Father.

Obama's mother was a CONFUSED, deluded, self-loathing WHORE, just as are the mindless minions who worship this NARCISSIST, with his messiah complex.

The bottom-line is this…Obama is now using the once-loathed one-drop rule because it now BENEFITS him in the brain-washed world of the far left. It is time to PERMANENTLY BAN both political parties, have another civil war, and issues some comeuppances to worthless human beings like Obama, his wife and children, among others.

You mention "hate-filled KKK conventions" because you have been PROGRAMMED to utter such inane phrases. Are you even aware, that each and every year, Black-on-Black violence results in MORE deaths, over 4,000, than were Black victims of KKK lynchings from 1866 to 1966, which number approximately 3,300 according to the Tuskegee Institute?

One modern Black-on-Black year > 100 years of so-called White "racism"!
