Huckabee Jokes About Obama Getting Shot At

During a speech to the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville, Kentucky Friday, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee joked to the audience that an offstage noise was Barack Obama avoiding gunfire.

"That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he's getting ready to speak," Huckabee said. "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor."

The line was met with laughter.

Nowhere in the quotation does Huckabee say anything about anyone getting shot at– only that someone "aimed a gun at him." Sheesh. That's a pretty desperate stretch for an attention grab.

Just like Charlton Heston before him, Hickabee apparently knows this audience well. He knew that the gun nuts would enjoy a joke about someone getting shot at. This is what the NRA is all about. But they DO NOT represent the average law-abiding gun-owner in this country. So, NRA, pull your gun from Heston's dead cold hands and go home and point it at each other.

Seems like the joke was that Obama was AFRAID of getting shot at and made the noise while tripping over a chair. Not quite the same as a joke about "Obama getting shot at" or "avoiding gunfire", but stating it accurately would not have made for as inflammatory of a headline, either, I guess. Depends whether you want to be a reporter or a comedy writer.

If another adult was to state a similar comment in public, I have no doubt that he/she would be detained, removed and interrogated by law enforcement. This kind of comment is beyond any civil, professional human being, let alone, a politcal figure who is making a public speech! How and why are such comments taken as a joke?

What happened to free speech is that we're exercising it in criticizing and/or making fun of Huckleberry. Apparently the conservatives can't take criticism either. I find it hilarious that, given our somewhat violent past and the tragic ends many African American leaders have me, the conservatives leap to the defense of the hillbilly, and don't even acknowledge that it is a tad bit offensive. That being said, I think he just botched a joke. Just make fun of him with better jokes and call him "Huckleberry"

I guess the reporter thought this was �shocking�, but it didn�t sound like that big of a deal to me. I wonder why she isn�t as shocked when somebody gets shot by a criminal and cannot defend themselves because the government has prevented them from owning a gun. I think it is interesting that the author said, in the headline,and implied, in the narrative that Huckabee said that someone was shooting at Obama. That's not what the quote said. The quote implies that Obama is afraid of guns and nothing is said about a gun being fired.

Why is this such a big deal!? Yesterday Bush's comment (that wasn't even aimed at Obama, but at Democrats stance that talking to terrorists is gonna make a difference) and now this? Huckabee didn't say anything about someone killing Obama or shooting at Obama. He simply joked that he tripped over a chair because someone aimed a gun at him (ridiculing his stance on gun ownership which is taking guns away from us). That is in no way a racist or harmful comment. If he had said it about Hillary everyone would be like "OH Huckabee hates women OOHH NOO!! EVIL EVIL!!" I'm so sick of the Democrats getting all upset over little comments that are blown way out of proportion. They will be the end of this country.

Just a bunch of busybodies -usually some guilt ridden white person- running around trying to protect someone else's FEELINGS. It's like that group of white folks that went nuts to get Speedy Gonzales taken off cartoons so that Mexicans would not be offended. Turns out Mexicans protested to get Speedy back on the air. Please be specific in your reporting. He didn't joke about Obama getting shot at; he joked about Obama having a gun pointed at him.

A fine distinction, maybe, but it's the difference between a murder allusion and an anecdote. This joke might be mildly offensive, but, in the context of an NRA meeting, is also mildly funny. Give him a break. If you'd seen this on the Daily Show, with Stewart saying it, you wouldn't give it a second thought.

And what liberal here hasn't made a joke about Bush actually getting shot. (Or Cheney, for that matter…) It's not like this is new, unique, or really even that offensive in the context or our current political climate. I can think of other politicians who have said crazier things (see also: Howard Dean) and meant them.

As an avid Second Ammendment advocate, I find nothing amusing in asinine comments like Gov. Huckabee. People being shot at is unfunny. I have had it happen to me twice.
It is one thing to mock someone "a car backfired and he dove for cover", but something completely reprehensible to do what Mike Huckabee did.
I would never vote for Barack Obama, because he is a socialist and I will never be a member of the NRA because they never do get their act together. Harlan Carter would never have put up with garbage like this and no hunter, gun owner nor Second Ammendment advocate finds Gov. Huckabee amusing at all.

I don't find the comment amusing at all, enlightening, perhaps. I thought he was better than that.
Now I see to comment about about it is to be labeled a 'whiny liberal or democrat' according to the Republican's who know everything and don't require a second party to lead.

Anyone who believes that this was an acceptable thing for Mike Huckabee to say probably wasn't alive the last time a President was assassinated. Those of us who do remember those days understand that there are certain things that responsible leaders cannot say, and this is one of them. Of course he was joking, but the point is that there could be some crazy person out there who doesn't think so, and scary as it is, that's the world we live in. Regardless of one's own political views, one would do well to recognize this fact and thus would find the former governor's comments shocking and dangerous.

The comment was not that Obama getting shot would be funny. The comment was not that Obama being afraid of guns was funny. The comment was that Obama ducking to avoid a gun that was AIMED at him was would be funny.

I'm missing the humor. Was he saying that someone would be a better President if they did NOT try and avoid a gun that was aimed at him?

It was, after all, just a joke - a pretty stupid one but still just a joke.

This so called joke by Mike Huckabee (a Minister of the Gospel no less) is appalling and should be condemned by every decent American and here is why. If you put this joke in the context of the history of how violence has been perpetrated onto millions of African Americans (slavery and post slavery), this becomes offensive and should be abhored. The fact that this statement was made at a National Rifle Association event no less-you know, the people who say "guns don't kill people, people kill people" underscores my point. Sadly there are hateful and evil individuals in this country that have or are entertaining the idea of doing unfathomable harm to Mr. Obama. These "innocent jokes" only throw fuel on the flames of such intentions. By calling it just a joke and saying people should get over it only dismisses racist attitudes or gun violence and is not constructive to healing and uniting us as Americans. It was just 40 years ago that Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King were Assassinated. While there is sure to be some hypersensitivity at anything negative or unflattering said about Barack Obama, we can not allow ourselves to be oppressed by the pressure from the advocates of political correctness. Nor can we allow the race baiter's to run roughshod over us.

Barack Obama is a political/public figure. He is and should be subject to the same license that is given to comedians, satirists and everyday citizens directed towards any person of like status.

Just consider all of the cartoons and caricatures that have been aimed at other national figures.

First of all, Huck didn't say ANYTHING about Barack "getting shot at"… Go back and review the video. All he said was, "Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor." Didn't say anything about shooting.

Probably not exactly the quip Huckabee wished he'd made, in hindsight, but so what? It was a gun crowd — well, it was THE gun crowd — and Huck came off with a lame wisecrack. Why would anyone, except a bunch of thin-skinned liberal jellyfish, be offended? I mean, where is the insult? Is it insulting to suggest that Obummer would dive for the floor if somebody pointed a gun at him? Sounds like a rational reaction to me. Or is it insulting to quip that Barack fell off of his chair? Gun shots or aiming guns are not joking matters, and Huckabee knows that. But this quick reaction shows the predjudiced mind and poor judgment and taste of Huckabee.

The Republicans will loose this election over its smear techniques and name calling, if for no other reason.

I don' t thinks people want to "hang" Huckabee for the comment. But most agree it was in poor taste even in a weird way they found it funny. Its just plolitics. The same thing as trying to criticize Obama for what he didn' t say. They held him responsible what his pastor was thought to say. That's just politics. Maybe people thought what Rev. Wright said was funny. But not many laughed. That is why it is important to stay in good taste regardless who thinks its funny. If someone toes the line they' re can be backlash and interpretation. These guys know that by now. Its not a matter of being better but just being in good taste no matter what. Its politics not being from the south that makes it hit the news. Again, similarly the Wright speech was on all channels the next day for at least 3 days. And Obama didn' t even make the speech. That' show politics work. But I think most people can see through the politics and see what the person represents. It was obvious that what is seen in Huckabee was not adequate for this country. What Obama is showing is that America can be what it once was and what people want it to be.

Again, the humor test is to insert your child's name in place of "Obama" in the joke. If you don' t laugh then it couldn' t have been funny. If you' re still laughing maybe it was…

The reaction was exactly what a thinking person would expect from the organization who wrote the "Three Rules" of safe firearms handling and lobbied for mandatory sentances for gun crime. And to the degree that prejudice related to color of class prompts white police to arrest blacks more readily and leads citizens more willingly to report black people to police as potential offenders AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE OVERLY CRIMINALIZED.

Some more information (although this is just a very limited amount)�Official crime index reported from the FBI excludes arrest for crimes raging form drinking and driving to serious white collar offenses. Clearly this omission contributes to the view of typical criminal as a person of color. If we broaden our definition of crime (Cases that do end up in the judicial system spending tax dollars to prosecute) to include driving while intoxicated, insider stock trading, embezzlement and cheating on income tax returns the proportion of white criminals rises dramatically. These crimes of i.e. and the alike (Enron) cooking the books misrepresenting millions of dollar on the NY Stock Exchange are to the distressing of millions of dollar and victimizing thousand of people. Look at the housing industry now the predatory lenders and with crazing raising cost to purchase a home is unprecedented. And who if any and there are some benefited from that.
