Freedom's Watch Ad Taken Off Air in La. Race

@ 4:00 pm by Walter Alarkon

A Baton Rouge television station is no longer running an ad attacking Democrat Don Cazayoux (La.) after the House candidate said it was inaccurate.

Democrats said that the ad by Freedom's Watch falsely stated that Cazayoux supported public health benefits for illegal immigrants. The spot is no longer running on WAFB, but Freedom's Watch spokesman Ed Patru said that the station may run the ad again after reviewing it. At least four other stations in the Baton Rouge area are playing the ad, Patru said.

Cazayoux's campaign called it a "desperate attempt" to distract voters from the "real issues."

“I'm glad that WAFB upheld its commitment to its viewers by ensuring that these lies are taken off their station,” Katie Nee, Cazayoux’s campaign manager, said in a statement.

Patru disputed the claim that the ad was false. Patru noted that Cazayoux had backed a federal children's health insurance bill that could loosen state regulations that help prevent the use of forged Social Security cards by illegal immigrants to get benefits.

"We expect [WAFB] will conclude the ad is accurate and run it," Patru said.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had also filed formal complaints about the ad questioning the group's funding and whether the group had illegally coordinated with the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Cazayoux is running against Republican Woody Jenkins in a special election Saturday to replace former Rep. Richard Baker (R).
